Remember, CAT on family days out and kids' meals drops to 5% from today until 1 Sept

Sharing this because I saw it a while ago and totally forgot about it until now.

From today (25th of June) until 1st of September, the government's "Great British Summer Savings" thing cuts VAT on a load of family stuff from 20% down to 5%. Businesses are meant to pass the saving on, so in most cases you don't have to do anything, the price is just lower at the till.

This includes:

- Kids' meals (anything off a children's menu)

- Children's and family tickets for cinema, theatre and concerts

- Admission for everyone, adults too, to places like theme parks, soft play, adventure parks, zoos, museums and wildlife parks

Watch out for what's not included:

- Car parking

- Memberships and annual passes, so existing National Trust/Merlin memberships don't change

- Season tickets, unless they cost the same as a single entry

- Sports facilities (lots of those are already VAT-free anyway)

Most places will just charge less automatically, nothing to do, but a few want a code at booking, so check the attraction's own page before you pay. If you've already booked something eligible for a date in this window, some places (National Trust being one) are refunding the difference. Worth a quick look at your confirmation email.

If you're planning anything big this summer, might be worth timing it for the window. We're eyeing up a soft play day and probably a cinema trip while the kids' tickets are cheaper.

One thing worth knowing: if a place isn't passing the saving on, that's worth querying with them, because the whole point is it reaches families rather than just disappearing into prices.

It's not too late to vote in Makerfield today

Polls close at 10pm. You still have three hours. Plenty of time to get there. Don't miss out on the opportunity to help decide the future of the UK. You might even choose the next Prime Minister.

Election Day in Makerfield

Time to make your vote count, people. Whoever you're likely to vote for, make your voice heard by getting down to the polling station today.

I'm going to be voting for Andy Burnham. I don't want a sexist like the Reform candidate representing me. But if you do, that's your choice of course.

Reform: I would rather vote for Jimmy Saville than Labour

This is utterly tasteless, repugnant and beneath any serious political party. Reform UK should be embarrassed. Jimmy Savile wasn't a meme or a political prop. He was one of Britain's worst serial sex abusers!

Whatever your views on Labour, turning his crimes into a campaign stunt undermines the suffering of his victims!

Do these people even know who Jimmy Saville was or what he did?

Who are you voting for on Thursday?

This by-election is a bit of a unique one with the potential to really raise the profile of Makerfield. That's what tips the balance for me in favour of Andy. I think we have an opportunity here none of us are likely to get in our lifetime again, to put the North at the heart of British politics instead of the sidelines.

Andy is not an ideologue but I think he can play a part in pushing Labour to deliver more results, on a faster time frame. He knows how to get things done and he knows how to take people with him as he does so.

He's made a real impact on Greater Manchester and I think he can do the same again for Makerfield specifically and the country as a whole.

Andy Burnham Cutting Business Rates

Anyone here owner of a small business? I chat to local business owners frequently, and I know they're not exactly fans of the current government's policies.

I've seen that Andy Burnham wants to review the NICs increase and cut business rates for small businesses. Will this be enough to save struggling local businesses? For those who have been turned off from Labour because of this, are you more likely to support a Labour Party led by Andy Burnham instead?

Any new MP must fix the flooding in Makerfield

The flooding is just ridiculous. We need to see action on this. We can't just keep seeing more development before the basics are fixed. I'm not against building developments in general but they should bring more to an area, not make it worse.

I know Andy Burnham has said he wants to get the flooding sorted first, I'm not sure about the other candidates though.

Andy Burnham on Two-Tier Policing

Did anyone else see this bit of Question Time? Andy Burnham praised the Manchester Police Chief for not taking the knee or putting rainbow flags on cars. I don't think two-tier policing is really a thing, but I also agree with Andy that public perception of neutrality is vital and I was surprised and impressed by his response on this.

Govt announces free buses for kids all August & VAT slashed on family days out

Just saw the announcement. For August, every child aged 5-15 in England travels free on local buses. No registration faff, no passes to sort out, they just get on.

Alongside it, VAT on family attractions drops from 20% to 5% between 25 June and 1 September. So zoos, museums, soft play, theme parks, cinemas, and kids' meals out are all getting cheaper.

Anyone else got plans they're now reconsidering? Always interested in what families are doing for cheap days out on the bus, too.

Predictions for the local elections?

With just a few hours left to go, who does everyone think the big winners and losers are going to be across Lancashire? Do you have any local candidates who you think will buck the national trends? Vote for who you think will win in your local ward.
