Who remembers VACUUM tube banking??

I still remember going to the drive through and hearing the whooshing of the vacuums as they sucked the money away

Costco Prime Picanha - Redemption cook

OK so last night I made some New York that got away from me a little in the sear. Not bad steals by any stretch if the imagination but I labeled em botched as I was being dramatic apparently.

So Costco had some Picanhas on tap and I felt the need to tey again as medium rare steak was on my mind. Dry brined for three hours to bring to room temp covered in black garlic salt.

Ok so oven baked at 350 until 108. Let em rest till completely room temp then cast iron skillet to finish, sauteed in duck fat. Strict 30 second intervals on the flip until I felt it was right.

Let them rest for ten minutes and then wolfed them mugs down. Cut down the middle length wise on each steak as that is against the grain then slice em to eat.

This was some.of the best steak I have ever had, restaurant, or not. No sauce needed, juicy AF. That reverse sear method AINT NO JOKE 🤣

New Yorks...Botched!

Made some New Yorks and was going for medium rare, as always. Was working a little too hard on the crust and over did it a little. They were tasty AF but again, botched then cook.

Cheers and go Dodgers!

Alberto knot

OK so I can ot for the life of me tie an FG knot. Maybe lots more practice but it seems too difficult. I can, however and have been practicing my Alberto knot.

I've got a 3 day trip.coming up. For my heavy jigs I will be using crimped leaders for 80lb and less, I plan to use the Alberto because I can tie it kinda quick.

Tied a couple here. Can anyone tell by looking at them if they looked like it's tied ok. Just using line I can spare to practice. 80lb power pro braid to 30lb trilene mono. Do they look decent or more practice?

Questions for 3 day

Ok so I'm taking my first 3 day trip, only done 1.5 so far. The boat is the Spirit of Adventure out of San Diego and it's a Phenix rods sponsored trip, not sure what that mean is though.

Are there any things that maybe don't get thought of or are overlooked that would make a huge difference in comfort.

Sharing a room. Plan to fish all nights and most of the time actually. I'll sleep when we get back. What are the things they you might say, man I wish I brought that?

TIA!

Gearing Up

So my better half thinks I went a little overboard gearing up for Tuna fishing, I had to kinda start from scratch because I sold a bunch stuff several years back during the Pandemic.

From left to right:

Headfirst custom 20-40 spinning setup with Shimano Twin Power 5000HG. Gonna have 39lb Varivas metered PE soon. (Just used for Lings recently hence the hooks)

UC Viper 7'6" paired with an Avet HXW 5/3 Raptor. Going to be spoiled with 600m of Varivas 90lb Metered PE

Rainshadow Custom 20-40 paired with an Accurate Valiant Boss Fury 400 - 40lb Braid

Connelly Platinum 400g SPJ rod paired with a Shimano Ocea Jigger 2501 Lefty. Going to be spooled with 600 yards of Varivas 57lb PE.Max Power 9.

Headfirst custom 80-130 Tuna Slayer. Paired with an Accurate Valiant BV 1000 Lefty 2 speed lever drag spooled with 1200 yds of Varivas PE max 9

Also filled up a Fish Labs Roller with assorted jigs from Submission fishing, and a bunch of others y'all probably use. My better half thinks I went a little overboard gearing up for Tuna fishing, I had to kinda start from scratch because I sold a bunch stuff several years back during the Pandemic.

Yah I probably did go overboard but questionable gear isn't gonna be the reason why I don't catch fish!

Not pictured is my other fly lining setup which is a Daiwa 50-80 spinning with a Shimano Thunnus 12k for the free spool action I like for fly lining.

Can I take 6 setups? Is that too many? Last thing I want is to not be ready when the bite is on.

Also filled up a Fish Labs Roller with assorted jigs from Submission fishing, and a bunch of others. I also grabbed a couple 350g tungsten jigs. I've got the gear to make bite leaders but I haven't gotten those done yet. May buy some in San Diego also at the landing too.

I've only been offshore a few times and had moderate success each time, save for the time I slept thru night fishing on my only bluefin trip like an idiot years ago.

I hope to go at least twice a year on a charter and more hopefully with a local friend. Hopefully I get years of use outta this stuff...or who knows maybe a garage sale coming up if my wife gets mad at me 🤣

Avet Raptor HXW

Ok so I have a 3 day coming up. I have an accurate Valiant 1000 on one rod and a backup rod for night jigging is a Connley 50-100. The rod is Red white and blue American flag colors.

For reels I ordered the last Aver Raptor HXW lefty ai could find only silver. Then I found an Acer Raptor HX not W that is silver and red. Ilike the color of the HX as it has some red but do I need the extra line capacity of the HXW?

I plan on using high end Varivas Max9 PE so it is thin. Just not sure if I need the extra line capacity the HXW offers.

Only one of the silver and red HX raptors avail in lefty. Do I need the extra capacity or is this good enough?

PE question

OK so I have a 3 day coming up, one setup has a new Accurate Valiant 1000 2 speed. I'm really hearing good things about Varivas PE but the only 1200m rolls I find say 1200m continuous line on 10 100m spools.

Why so.lany spools? I'm planning to have a shop put my line and topshot on the reel but I want to bring my own line and wanted to make sure they would be able to use this to spool the reel or would it not work because of the multiple spools?

Thanks for any input!

Fishing Gloves Question

Ok quick question for y'all. I ordered some Shimano gloves and buncha stuff from overseas for an upcoming 3day offshore fishing trip in Mexico.

Both pairs of gloves have this weird Velcro flap/cover.on both hands. I've never seen anything like it and I wanted to find out what they are for.

A quick Google search was fruitless. Not sure what they are for? To pin/hold your line while you retie? Anyone know?

Cheers!
