I want to grow my hair but im not sure what to do

Hi, ive been growing my hair for about 7-8 months. I have always had short hair but sonce im 31 and i think my hair is not going to be around for much longer i wanted to try xD.

I want to try and get a little above the shoulders. Right now is longer than i have ever had it and i dont really know how to properly take care of it and style it.

This is my hair now and how i would like to have it.

I know i still have maybe a year before my hair reaches that long and i want to style the inbetween hair better. I particularly hate those curls i get above the ears.
