Coping strategies to avoid buying
I had my first session with my psychologist today, and I really liked her approach.
One of the questions she asked me was: *“What are you going to do when you feel the urge to visit another online store or buy something impulsively?”*
I told her I’d try to break down that feeling of urgency by reminding myself that:
My wardrobe is already full of clothes, so why not get excited about creating new outfits with what I already own?
I don’t need another pair of jeans, and I’ll probably feel happier and less anxious if I choose not to buy them.
I need to distract myself and redirect my attention to other activities, like reading, crocheting, or exercising/going to the gym.
For now, these are my go-to coping strategies.
What other hobbies, activities, or coping strategies have helped you resist the urge to shop?
Ps: I have a subreddit about compulsive shopping in Portuguese. If you speak the language, stop by. Your support will be very helpful in opening up more spaces to talk about this issue.
