Summer scammers back

The high-pressure summer pest control sales reps are back.

A dude named Lincoln went door-to-door in my neighborhood. He claimed my neighbors use their services (didn't give me the name of the service) and mumbled the names of the neighbors. When I said I already had a pest control service, he would not take that as an answer, so I slammed the door in his face. One of my neighbors asked for his business card, and don't you know, he's all out.

I did some research, and here are the red flags:

  1. They carry a tablet or cell phone. If you watch, they will look at it when referring to your neighbors. They are using public records to get the names of your neighbors.
  2. They don't have business cards because it will give you a chance to research the company before signing on with them. They want you to sign a contract right then.
  3. They keep talking even after you say you are not interested.

What I should have done was ask for a copy of their door to door sales permit, but I didn't. Then I could have reported them to the town.

Be wary y'all.

My kids are in college and I was thinking about the field trips they went on in elementary and middle school compared to ours. Everything was very historical - Frontier Culture Museum, trips to DC. Although they did visit a jail (very small town - more like a drunk tank).

I lived in Virginia - so we went to all the historic places. We had Safety Town (we learned bicycle and pedestrian safety in a miniature version of a town). We went on a fossil dig (if you found a certain item, you got a free Coke). I think we went to a farm too.

But then there were some things we should not have done like visiting a butcher at a grocery store in elementary school. I have vague memories of meat hanging from the ceiling on hooks. We went to NYC in high school (international relations and AP government classes) and our transportation to the airport didn't show up, so groups of some of the teens were sent to the Port Authority without a chaperone (in 1980s NYC). My adult sister was a chaperone, so I hung out with her, but I think there was a day where you could do what you wanted without a chaperone. I may be misremembering.

What weird ass field trips did you go on - especially if they would never be allowed today.

Keep the discourse civil please

"Former Blacksburg Town Council member Liam Watson received two years of unsupervised probation Monday after a judge suspended prison sentences on his three felony convictions for election fraud and illegally voting."

I am rather disappointed in the sentencing. After reading the article, it seemed as though he was treated as a child who didn't know better. I know at 25 you make dumb decisions, but Watson ran for office before and worked for the Democratic Party. I find his lack of knowledge an excuse. He also did not express remorse.
