Please help me find a right diet for my cat who’s currently only eating kibble. I’m trying to clicker train her.
My cat (female, 3 years) is eating only Blue Buffalo kibble. That was the diet her foster had her on and we just continued that. Her foster mentioned that she’s pretty picky and is quite sensitive to food. We have had her taken to vet and tested and the vet mentioned that she’s perfectly fine and healthy (touch wood 🧿). She does not eat wet food at all. She’s a bottle baby if that matters.
Now to clicker training… it’s nothing crazy. We want to be prepared in case of an emergency (like earthquake or floods or wildfires etc). She’s slippery as an eel and hides in places no one ever thinks to look at. So in case of a real emergency, we don’t want to be panicking that we can’t find her. So we want to clicker train and crate train her.
Now the issue is that, the clicker we bought comes with a guide. It says that if she’s not food motivated (she isn’t), then we should stop free feeding her (she isn’t the type to snack, she eats at specific times but we leave a little kibble out so that she doesn’t go hungry) and switch to wet food. Furthermore, the guide says that if our cat doesn’t eat wet food, then we must begin to transition her to freeze dried food and then hydrate the freeze dried food, thus gradually getting her used to the wet food texture.
I found Instinct freeze dried food but when I read the ingredients I was…confused…? There was Lactic Acid listed in it among other things that I can’t even pronounce. Furthermore, when I tried reading more about this online, people mentioned that it’s better to have the cat on kibble than freeze dried food.
I am concerned and thoroughly confused now. Please help me find a good diet for my cat. Is it alright if she eats only Kibble (my vet said it’s okay so I didn’t make a big fuss over it)? Do I not transition her to Freeze dried food? Is it bad? If it’s okay, then could you recommend a brand that’s good? Has anyone trained their kitty when they ate only Kibble?
Tl;Dr: My cat only eats Blue Buffalo kibble (never wet food) and my vet says she’s healthy, so I’m not worried about that. But my clicker training guide says non-food-motivated cats need to switch to wet food, then freeze-dried as a stepping stone if they won’t eat wet. I tried Instinct freeze-dried but got spooked by ingredients like lactic acid, and read online that kibble is actually better than freeze-dried anyway. Trying to clicker + crate train her for emergency prep (earthquakes, fires, etc.) since she hides really well. Questions: Is kibble-only actually fine? Do I need to transition her to freeze-dried at all? Is freeze-dried bad? Any kibble / freeze dried food recommendations? Has anyone trained a kibble-only cat?
