Howdy! I’ve had an idea running in my head the past few days and wanted to see if anyone has read something like this.

Basically, a lavender marriage, and the couple become best friends. They help each other fly under the radar and get dates, etc. I thought the idea was super cute. Any time period, but if it’s in the 50s it’s and instant read.

TLDR I was asked to sing at a wedding ceremony tomorrow and the bride isn’t paying me. AITA for not wanting to sing or considering asking for payment?

Howdy! I’m sure this seems like an easy answer but there’s some outside factors that make me wonder if I’m the ass.

I (17f) have been performing and singing for a long time. I volunteer in the choir at my local church to accumulate service hours for college, otherwise I would have no part in it. In December, I was asked to canter the Christmas Eve services, which is two hours of trying not to pass out from incense fumes, but I was gonna be there anyway, so I said yes. Apparently, at the mass, someone liked the way I sounded, and approached my choir director and asked if I would sing at her wedding ceremony. For clarification, I do not know this woman. Haven’t met her yet, don’t know her name, nothing. My director approached me, and since I’ve never done a wedding before, I thought I could add this to my resume and said sure.

I have no relation to this woman and since I would be taking the time to sing at her wedding, I assumed I would be given some form of compensation. I’m not expecting hundreds of dollars, at most just a $20 and a “Thanks!” would be more than enough. As time passed though, it’s become rather clear that this woman expects me to do it for free as charity work. I won’t get into all the details, but because I’m technically with the church, she believes this is a free service.

If it were any other day, I wouldn’t complain. I’d suck it up like I always do when this sort of thing happens (and it happens a LOT. I constantly work pro bono and don’t enfore my hourly rate). But it’s the last day of my junior year. Instead of going out with the rest of my friends to celebrate I’m going to sing at the wedding of a woman who hasn’t even had the courtesy to contact me about questions I’ve sent her in order to make sure I present myself in a way that matches the vision for her wedding. And yes, I’m sure she’s busy with wedding prep, but as I’m one of the people working at her event, I feel like she should have at least sent me a notice.

Here’s where I mught be the ass. I brought this up to my mom and sister, who are also performers and I thought they’d have some input. Mom told me that I was being overdramatic about not being paid and should be honored that I was asked to sing. Sis said I was greedy and that this was selfish of me to even consider.

I hadn’t even reached out to the bride yet to ask her about being paid, and I still haven’t. The wedding is tomorrow, and I can’t help but feel my talent is being taken advantage of. You would pay a DJ, you would pay a wedding band, you would pay ANYONE providing you a service, hell, you even have to pay the CHURCH to have your wedding there, so why not me? Because I’m not technically an adult, or because I was in the choir when she found me? Idk, but i’d really appreciate it if someone could give me their input on this. Thanks :)

I had one rehearsal with the director and it was last week. He was unable to confirm my questions about attire. All I got were my pieces and arrival time. I went to the wedding, and while I was getting ready, my choir director literally tossed a small envelope into my lap. I opened it when I got home, and it was what looked like a rushed message from the couple saying thanks with compensation inside. I wish she had responded to any of my questions or let me know she had plans to compensate me, otherwise I would have been a lot less anxious (And I wouldn’t have wasted all of your guys’ time! Again, I really appreciate your advice. I’m sorry I was unable to respond to every comment, but this got a lot more attention than I anticipated!). I still never spoke to her, and was unable to thank her as she booked it to her catering venue immedeatly after the ceremony (which went fine!). I’m still planning on putting together a services and fees packet so I can avoid this sort of thing in the future.
