Small rucksacks. Any recommendations?

Good morning everyone. I'm looking for a new rucksack for hiking and cycling.

I like them small. In the 10L-15L range. I've been using the Decathlon 10L which, for the price (less than a fiver) is fantastic. But I'd like something a little nicer in quality, with maybe an extra pocket or two.

It must have the two standard shoulder straps, more an issue for cycling than hiking. And I'm also not interested in bags with in-built water systems, or straps that go round the waist.

Any ideas?

What's everyones opinion on gearbox oil?

Most non-car people usually say that you shouldn't change it as it's designed for life or something. But did VW really expect MK4's to still be 'alive' in 2026?

My instinct is to change it. I did actually start doing it but struggled to get the drain-plug out and rounded it off. So it's not getting changed anyway without considerable ballache.

So, do you change? What are the arguments for/against?

What are they doing in that bit near London Rd/Broadfield Rd/Saxon? Road.

You know where the Sheaf/Meersbrook junction is. There used to be an antiques centre there. Seems like they've been developing it for ages.. Looks like civil engineering rather than housing.

Also whilst I'm here. That new MASSIVE thing that Forgemasters have thrown up near Meadowhall? The sheer scale of that thing is impressive. Makes you proud 💪

Would one get in trouble for hopping on a freight-train?

I was waiting for a train recently at a quiet rural station. Nobody about. A freight train had stopped momentarily at my platform. The business end being way up ahead out of sight and view. I was checking out the graffiti and technical information on the 'carriages' whatever they're called? (It was the type that grain or aggregates are loaded into rather than shipping container type freight).

As it was a lovely day, I was considering how nice it would be to climb on and hitch a ride to my destination 'al fresco' rather than cooped up with other people and relentless pointless information announcements.

Do you think I would have gotten away with this? Even if caught, I had a ticket, though granted, not for that train! Any dangers I might not have considered? I would keep well clear of the buffering bits so as not to get squashed. Likewise not climb up too high in case of bridges. Also I thought it best to ride on the back of one rather than the front just in case it should brake sharply and throw me forward.

I wonder if people do travel like this like the old US hobos. Or indeed like India or Bangladesh.

Anyone noticed the ninjas on motorbikes weaving through traffic recently?

Noticed them a few times this summer. Usually whilst sat in a jam on one of the main roads. Two of them on a moped, no helmets, ninja-style face coverings. Guessing they're on the look out for phones to steal through open windows.

My AC is broken so I always have the window down, but luckily no phone on view.

They may well just be nice lads in a rush. Too hot to wear helmets. But just in case, maybe don't have your phone on display to the right of the steering wheel.

Legality of speed limit.

Local to me there is a road which is 50mph. But on every bend there is a new sign which indicates 40mph. This has always confused me as I can't remember ever seeing this anywhere else in the country - where the speed limit changes depending on how straight the road is. Normally, one would ignore these distractions, and just go at 50, or less depending on conditions as required, but there are cameras on that road so you have to do the whole staring at your speedo thing going from 50 to 40 to 50 etc...

Is it an actual legal requirement or a 'suggestion' like those old fake 20 signs, 'twenty's plenty' etc, designed to look like a real sign in order to confuse?

Would anyone like to buy a kayak?

I thought I'd ask here before it goes on eBay in case any locals want it. Not even sure it's allowed so apologies in advance if not, I did check the rules.

It's a Dagger Katana 9'. A decent all-rounder. I bought it about ten years ago second hand. But after taking it on the canal and the odd reservoir a few times I got bored and it's been neglected and taking up considerable space ever since. It'd be much happier on a river/white water. I had plans on exploring The Don but was put off by all the weirs.

£400.

Any interest, let me know and I'll provide further info/photos.

Enthusiast version question.

Hello,

I'm looking to buy VCDS as a home user to work on my daily driver.

I have a question regarding the 'three vehicles' thing.

I only ever work on one vehicle at a time - the one I'm currently driving. So I assume this license will cover me for my current, and next two cars. When I sell my third car and buy the fourth, do I have to buy more licenses or can I replace one of the licenses from one of my previous cars that I no longer own?

Thanks

VAG COM / VCDS etc?

Hey guys. This will sound like a dumb question, but what is it exactly that I need to buy?

I'm not a mechanic, just had VW's all my life because I'm familiar with them. I currently have one of those cheap things that plugs in, then an app (Car Scanner Pro) which is pretty good, but still limited. So as I'm always tinkering with my cars I think it's time to invest in proper diagnostics.

So do I buy from Ross-Tech? I'm in the UK by the way. Do I need just the software, or the cable too? Is VCDS/VAG COM the same thing? On the site it says I can buy the 'enthusiast' version which is limited to three vehicles. Can I change the three vehicles as I sell/buy new ones? Or is it a case of after three the cable/software is dead or you need to pay more?

What tech does the software run on? I mostly use Mac but do have an old W10 laptop somewhere.

Thanks.

Dead AC.

Hey guys,

UK based, and after all the hot weather we've been having I'm eager to get my AC working. I've had the car (1.8t) for years but the AC was never a priority.

So I've had it re-gassed. Annoyingly though, I had that done during cold weather so I can't remember if that fixed the issue or not. The garage that did it never mentioned any problems, but by the time the hot weather came around it wasn't blowing cold. So i either have a leak or the problem is elsewhere.

Next I checked all the relevant fuses and replaced them just in case. No change.

So now I'm looking at the compressor. I notice that the clutch bit near where the belt passes over isn't spinning. Does that mean the compressor is dead? Any other ideas/common causes?

Thanks for reading 👍

Roadworks Derek Dooley Way / Furnival Road.

Does anyone know, or know where to find out what they are doing here and when it will be finished?

I work just beyond the ring road and used to use Furnival Road daily. I've been doing a longer detour since the work began and am beginning to think that the old route might never reopen to traffic. Perhaps cycles only/one way or something.

Thanks

Does anyone know if the Snake Pass is closed to traffic at the moment?

It was closed for a period a few years back. Got to cycle it without the traffic. Would be good to take the opportunity to do it again if it's closed.

Sheffield hikers: Best way to Grindleford station/cafe?

Hi guys, I've tried to do this walk a few times and get the train back. I usually set off from Dore & Totley station. Heading up into Totley before crossing Totley Moss just after the Cricket Inn pub.

Problem is: all is fine until just after the railway tunnel ventilation shaft where you emerge onto the junction of Stony Ridge Road and Owler Bar Road. Then I've always ended up walking along busy roads, having to jump into the long wet grass every time a car comes past. The road way doesn't even seem to be quicker and goes on forever.

Is there a more 'as the crow flies' path across the moor from the junction of Stony Ridge/Owler Bar road?

Thanks
