Hi all, I work in HVAC as a embedded SWE, and I do no register level work, I implement high level controls. I also don’t write the control algorithms, just implement them.

My question is, would this experience qualify me for flight software engineer roles at aerospace companies? Or are flight software engineers required to also be the ones writing the control theory.

Hi all, I am interview prepping, currently working as an embedded SWE, looking to break into large aerospace companies like SpaceX.

I understand that these bigger companies tend to still incorporate leetcode style questions into the process unlike other embedded interviews.

My question is, would it be beneficial to do leetcode in C++, To show that I know C++ well?

The downside is that python is just simply much better for the purpose of leetcode and there are so much more resources. Just because these are embedded roles I am wondering if it would be worth it.

Hey yall, I’m in a little bit of a situation here

I graduated last month, started my new role in the Midwest, making 90k a year. Relocated, signed a 12 month lease and bought furniture and everything.

I just got an interview invited by one of my dream companies that have rejected me countless times lmao. This new job would have me move across the country again. Since I signed a year long lease and I do love my current job so far, I will not be interviewing. But is it possible to ask the recruiter for permission to keep their contact info and contact them in about a year time when I start looking again?

Hi everyone, I am closing in on working for 1 year as an embedded software engineer at a large HVAC company, I want to start interviewing now, wondering what the situation is like for people who did the same thing recently.

I am targeting aerospace, if I can't get into aero then defense first.

In my role I work with controls engineers who does all the fancy control theory stuff, and I work with all the code to implement controls and work with all the sensors. No real register level work, but still embedded, having to deal with hardware, all kinds of communication protocols, and my code goes on a microcontroller.

Questions:

1. How is the market currently?
2. Do I need to prep leetcode?
3. Do I need to prep system design? If so, is embedded system design the same study materials as normal software engineer system design rounds? (I would appreciate some resources on this if you have any that worked for you)
4. Just wondering for people who have switched jobs that relocated them early on in their careers, is it common to see people interviewing before they have to resign their lease for another year? I feel like if i miss this deadline, I would be forced to stay another year. (idk if finding a sublease is easy)
5. Also I work wit C++ in my job, if I am interviewing for C++ jobs, do i need to prep C for interviews? All the interview tips I see in this sub refers to C

Hey yall, I recently started a controls SWE role, and it looks like I’m going to be working closely with a controls engineer who writes the algorithms and all the math stuff, and I am the one who implements it into C++.

It this a common process in the industry? Am I still a controls software engineer or not really, just a software engneer at this point? Someone in my same role said that we don’t need much control theory at all to do our job.

Would this be good experience for GNC roles in Aerospace? Or would that require me to actually write the control algorithms

Just a reminder to yall that verbal offers don’t mean anything! And also if everyone on your team likes you it also doesn’t mean anything, it’s up to the higher ups intimately to approve that offer.

Had verbal offer from my summer internship from last year at a relatively big tech company in California, worked for them all throughout my school year because they said I’m getting a return offer.

A month before I graduate, they tell me that my offer was not approved even though everyone wanted me.

This really fucked me because I missed all of senior year to find a job. (I got lucky and landed one before I graduated)

I recently moved from minnesota to wisconsin, and as I was changing my address, i did "start a new quote", I kept everything the same except the address, and the quote that it generated was almost 50 percent less than what I am currently paying, but everytime at the final screen when I want to submit the quote, I get shown an error and I am unable to complete it.

So I called geico to change the address and ask about the quote, but they told me that my quote hasn't changed and the thing on the website is wrong. So is the website quote for geico ususally just not accurate?

My quote went from 1235 for 6 months to 601 for 6 months, just as an example, the most significant change among many others was for "Property Damage Liability", choosing the same option of $100,000, the price went from 391.13 down to 120.

Is there possibility or talks of a costco anytime soon?

Just moving to the area and my biggest and really only issue with the area is that the nearest Costco is more than an hour away :(

I am an embedded software engineer working in the Aero industry for nearly 10 years now, working in one of the major rocket companies.

I have always dreamed of my own startup, and without getting into details of what my ideas are, and that the aerospace industry is very difficult for startups to survive, I understand the risks, and I have the capital at this time in my life to fail and if I don’t try now I’ll prolly never try.

My question is, my knowledge lacks as an engineer as someone from a CS background, would it be beneficial for me to pursue a part time masters in system engineering or get a cert in it?

So is TS kind of a dev job? Or is it more glorified tech support that occasionally might need to push some code? Do you contribute to the main code base?

Can you pivot to SWE jobs as a TS? Or should you not settle for this role if you want to have a future in SWE

Hi all, new grad embedded SWE here, writing C++ for HVAC control. My goal is to break into Aerospace as an embedded or flight SWE.

Dream companies would be SpaceX, blue or Rocket Lab, also any of the other well known ones like ULA, NASA, impulse, relativity, etc.

My question is, how much do projects matter after you graduate? Should I still spend my free time making projects, or would taking on a lot of responsibility at work be enough?

Should I grind leetcode? Ik big tech and SpaceX does leetcode style questions for embedded too, should I practice in C++?

How is this apartment? I am unable to find any reviews but it looks nice and new and it’s a pretty good price, 830 for a 1b1b

Is flight software embedded software? I am currently working a job at a large hvac company writing C++, my title is embedded software engineer but I don’t work on low level code, no register level stuff, mostly higher level object oriented C++, and implementing control algorithms. Is this similar to what flight software is? My dream is to work at SpaceX, blue or rocket lab as a flight software engineer, and I’m wondering if I am on the right track experience wise, or if I need to try get a lower level embedded role.

Also, if anyone here has interviewed for an entry to mid level flight software role at any large aerospace company, I would really appreciate it if you shared you experience and the company.

I’m going to start my first full time job as an embedded SWE soon. I think the company is willing to pay for a masters for me, but I’m not a big fan of the local college.

I came from a CS background so ideally I want to learn more electronics and embedded stuff so maybe I can do an online ECE masters? Is this a possible path or not really, if so, what schools do you recommend?

Ik the famous ones for online CS masters are Georgia tech UIUC and ut Austin but they don’t have any focus in embedded

90k+10 in a low cost of living area.
150 apps, 2 interviews, 1 rejected first round and the other got offer after 3 rounds, can’t believe my luck.

I had 1 internship at no name company doing web dev, and I had student club experience (Solar vehicle) which is pretty much all I talked about in interviews. I thought I couldn’t get into embedded because it’s for comp E people, but I learned embedded on my own (stm32) and only applied to embedded positions, genuinely so happy rn, I graduate this month and I’ve been so stressed.
