I have no idea why I appreciate it so much- but the ability to sling your weapon is a feature I cherish in the open world environment where not everything you see is destined to die.

I think of games like Ready or Not where you're wandering around your own police station with your weapon at whichever ready you've chosen... Or Gray Zone Warfare where you're wandering around your own bases locked and loaded. Don't even get me started about Breakpoint.

Anyway- Glad to be back. Anyone else like the sling functionality?

1.0 didn't stick. What's next?

I'm not sure exactly what was expected of what I can only call a premature 1.0 launch... I get it- we all have needs but now we're ALL right back to where we started.

If this was one last "Hail Mary" before the game hits the shelf can someone just be honest with the player base about it? Would be nice if someone talked to us like a valued customer whose money you already have. I bought my 3 copies so I've pulled my weight...

There are some cool features here- the weapon / kit customizations are probably the most authentic available for a game in this genre- evident since screenshots of stock setups and a few mods are all that you can find in the sub. Training ground? Always been a fan. No concerns there.

There's no doubt that there is some talent in play on the dev team- To keep clawing at the ceiling hoping for something to break open takes some balls.

There MUST be another outlet for it? Another game to merge with? A little "out with the old, in with the new?"

99% of us- me included- can have a vision with no ability or grit (or both) to execute... for any number of reasons. There's no shame in it- as someone fearsomely handsome and equally stupid once said: "Just try and do a little better each time."

But it's hard to get ahead when you leave yourselves behind.

So... what's next? Decisive plans for GB or are there bigger fries to fish?

Ghost Recon Wildlands Machinima: The Biters

This is a series I'd worked on a couple years ago. It looks like we might get some more interest in Wildlands in the near future so I'm going to share this. It puts a spotlight on the amazing environment available to us in game and its potential as a creative outlet.

Machinima, for those that don't know, is basically creating cinematic content using video game assets. It's not for everyone but Wildlands was an exquisite movie set. The fact it includes an authentic population and landscape sets it apart from almost any other game in the genre that I can think of.

I don't think any have come close since.

The story covers a "Rainbow" team that combines operators from 4 tier 1 units- JTF2, Delta, GIGN and of course the SAS.

I encountered a few stumbling blocks during production since I have a literary background but no cinema. I had to try and find a few different ways to make things work- but this series was made once I'd added additional voice actors and changed the format of the story telling. Even if you just click through the episodes and watch the intros... there's some really neat asset use in play.

I learned a lot from the experience- if you like Wildlands or have a creative streak this series might help you get a little more out of both. The biggest learning is that to keep people's attention in cinema / TV you need to have a "tension" moment every 3-5 minutes and that time is getting shorter and shorter. Unfortunately I learned that lesson a bit later but I got close.

Now that wildlands is back on the radar I'm REALLY tempted to get back into it so I'm open to constructive feedback.

Stern in: Unable. How did you practice?

Today was probably the first time I ever hailed a marina and had them call out a “stern in port tie.”

I’ll admit- it’s not something I’ve done or tried or practiced… ever.

Couple different reasons but suffice to say lack of confidence is right at the top. I was flying solo so pile that on top of my list of excuses.

So to those of you without thrusters… how did you practice? How long did it take to do it reliably?

Any uncomfortable crunching noises? Any valuable lessons learned?

All frequencies open! Share your story!

A day to celebrate the online friendships that DCS forged for so many of us.

DCS has been a playground for many of us for well over a decade. In that time we’ve had a thousand wingmen- many of which we will never meet.

3 years ago today I got a message from RedBravo65 / GJH’s wife saying words to the effect: “red bravo has passed away. He always cherished his time with you and your community.” I had the most complex path through the emotional spectrum… I hadn’t expected to feel a sense of loss for someone I hadn’t met- and you might not either. But it’s there.

I’m a little leaguer on YouTube and only have a channel to post occasional creative content- the link isn’t to draw attention to the channel (I could care less I have no ambition to make money from it) but more just to try and share my vision of what DCS brings to all of us. Today is my day. I do want to remaster this video to take it to another level- all things in time.

We don’t always get along and social media keeps us in a constant battle to feed a machine too big to see. But when it comes down to sticks and rudders and that tingle you get when you look over your shoulder in game and see that aircraft you love piloted by some dude (or dudette) who has your 6- remember that good people are out there doing good people things… whether you see them or not.

And I’ll always remember “RedBravo65” as one of the best.

Just got told I had a nice bottom…

Flattered- until I realized what she meant.

First time it’s been done in over 10 years- was way overdue. A lot of “ketchup” maintenance is done and now I wait as the various trades calculate their earnings.

Wish me luck. 🍀

On the hard deck… friend vs foe:

Been sailing since I was a tadpole but a lot of the actual maintenance was happening in the background.

I’m new to this… any horror stories? Any early signs you wish you’d picked up on earlier? Any warning signs other new folks can consider?

This doesn’t need to be a blame and flame post- but… I mean… help me help you help others.

Photo just because.

Winch service: these really are marvels of engineering.

A few weeks ago I’d posted for some tips / pointers on doing my first winch service. I started with two winches I don’t use very often so I could get a feel for it. Thanks to all who weighed in.

Overall I’m VERY surprised how straightforward it is. The videos I tried watching all had slightly different winches- and most looked like they’d been serviced 10 times a year and were immaculate. I was able to use the twin as a reference as I was reassembling.

I know these haven’t been serviced in 30 years. One thing I noticed is i think grease was free back then- just gobs and gobs of it everywhere.

Took about an hour and a half per winch. I had almost everything apart that could come apart.

Next time I won’t need to go quite as deep but this time was a case of extremis.

As a dude who just completed his first 2 winches I might be better suited to answer beginner related questions than very experienced folks who make it sound easy- but here’s the thing: it’s actually easy. Tedious- but easy.

If you’ve been holding off on your winch service and need a little reassurance let me know I’d love to pay it forward.

One thing I did notice is my short thistle paint brush was spraying spirits all over the place as I brushed but I didn’t really notice the mess I made until it was too late. Fortunately most of my work area was mostly covered up.

This is a Harken 44.2. Tomorrow I’ll be working on the bigger 53.2s.

Wish me luck.

Entering the fatal funnel...

I really like the way this capture turned out. Taken while moving through the alley entrance of the garage in "Buy Cheap Buy Twice."

Roadside naps in game... Sort of.

I have my fatigue / time-limits turned off but I'll simulate my roadside naps by pulling over at a place of my choosing, then using the ~` console control button and typing g_set_time # command to pick the time I want to wake up.

(If you don't have the console command set up just go into your "my documents" ATS folder, scroll down to config.cfg and open it up with notepad++ or whatever you use. You might want to just "copy / paste" the original copy of the config.cfg file as a backup.

When in your wordpad / notepad etc, CNTRL+F and type "console" ENTER. When it brings up to the entry change the value to 1 and save the file. Then use the ~ ` key to activate the console in game)

I do hope they "Make Sleepers Great Again" allowing those trucks more flexibility for nap locations- or at least limit day cabs to a couple hour naps.

Suicide by cop... Eventually

A few of us on the car dealership- I tossed a bang in and discombobulated 3 dudes. We were working through them and I got to the last one thinking "I've got two guys on my side (one out of view not using a laser), both covering me- I'm going to go long and hold so one of the others can hook this last dude up."

Well... as my old boss in real life used to say to me: "I think you realize by now you made a bad choice."

(Note: IR Lasers show up green in the replays)

Winch service: Tell me about your first time!

Been sailing a long time but this will be my first service experience.

Watched some videos on it and it seems straightforward enough…But I’ve also watched some Bas Rutten videos on fighting- so much as to say sometimes there’s a lot more to it.

I’m running a compliment of 30 year old Harken winches… the kind that still needs tools.

What’s in store for me?

I've invented the "9 Dang Grenade." It's basically what you say when you realize you forgot to pull the pin before yeeting it at the bad guys...

Zipper and Button: Two resident Pacific White Sided Dolphins join iXchel off Port Angeles

My wife and I recently sailed down to Port Angeles for a couple days and our first visit. Neither of us had any idea what to expect and suffice to say we found plenty of reasons to go back. Everyone we encountered were friendly and hospitable and most even laughed at all my stupid Canadian jokes eh.

So it was no surprise as we were leaving that a couple of resident Pacific White Sided Dolphins took us under their wing and entertained us for about 25 minutes. We stumbled into them about 2 minutes out of “Boat Haven.” A tanker was on its way out and we were in the way- they told us to stay close to the spit and we obliged… and the encounter began.

I did some research on these two and discovered they’d been in the area and photographed at least since this past February. Others have confirmed they are known to be very playful and this experience was no different. We got our GoPro on a stick and got to experience them in exquisite detail- well as exquisite as last minute amateurs can make it in a lightly edited video.

This video captures them on and below the surface- and the subsurface vocalizations are intriguing.

I would love it if someone who knew what they’re talking about could elaborate a bit on why these two are out on their own, whether they’re male / female or just companions?

Their behavior is very different which is why the names fit- you’ll see why in the first couple minutes.

Anyway- enjoy! We sure did.

Trip across the border to the US- Resident Dolphins bid us adieu!

I'd posted a few days ago about crossing the border to Port Angeles... and the crossing went pretty well. I used the CBP ROAM app and that seemed to streamline things. I made a few flubs (I forgot the significance of being in another country and wandered up to the moorage office to pay... I shouldn't have done that.)

The experience in PA was a bit different than what I expected but ultimately we did find many reasons to go back- most further inland.

But as we left we spotted what looked initially like seals / sea lions playing around... then one jumped- like 5 feet out of the air... Which we know seals don't often do unless they're flung like a trebuchet by an Orca.

As we got closer what we later learned is a resident pair of Pacific White Sided Dolphins hanging out between PA and Race Rocks across the Straight of Many Names. This was a truly magical experience since I got our gopro out and put it on a reach pole to get some underwater capture of the action.

One of them was really skootching around and more acrobatic... the other was a bit more subdued so I call them "Zipper" and "Button." I'm not sure if they're both males, females, or a couple... but Dolphins don't characteristically mate long term. They also tend to move around in bigger groups so these two who have been in the region for about 6 months are real outliers and this made the experience that much more amazing.

Anyway- here are a few photos of the encounter.

First time heading across the US / Canada border… on my own boat.

Photo just because Fish n chix might be the best boat name I’ve ever seen… other than ID Yacht anyway.

I’m preparing for a brief jaunt across the “strait of wannafukya”to Port Angeles and “Boat Haven.”

I got the ROAM app and filled out the necessary bits but curious what sort of shakedown I can expect? Medias got me thinking about anal probes and DNA tests plus a tariff on oxygen.

Any curve balls I should be prepared for?
