Pickles gets to try out his outdoor play area for the first time today! (Not his full time cage, securely assembled and reinforced)

And before anyone gets on me about it, yes I’m going to cover the bare wood swings/perches in cotton clothesline or something else.

I got Pickles’ aviary set up outside. NOT HIS FULL TIME CAGE.

This is for him under supervision when I’m outside, and it’s also located right outside my home office door, and underneath 2 huge shags trees.

And it’s reinforced at every joint with 4 zip ties rated at 75 lbs each.

I would never do anything to put my bird at risk. And thanks to the people that actually had the wherewithal to ask for clarification rather than just throwing a downvote.

Can my buddy Pickles ever have bits of human snacks?

I want to start by saying that for the 2 months I've had him, he's never had human food of any kind.

His main diet is pellets, with seed available only as an "out of the cage" snack and even then only in limited quantities and mixed in with pellets, dry oatmeal, and cut-up bits of dried fruit. Sometimes he even gets mealworms.

But as I sit here munching on some Fritos and looking and Pickles, it got me thinking...would it ever be ok to break off a tiny, pellet-sized piece to give him as a very, very rare treat? Or is all salt an instant no?

I've learned about the main things no birds should have such as chocolate, onion, avocado and such. But I'd like to learn more from other owners' experience.

Pickles says thank you!

KeViN, tHe AtTaCk PiGeOn, TuRnS oN hIs FaVoRiTe HuMaN, rIpS hIm To ShReDs!!

I work a few days a week at my local pet store, and last year someone brought this pigeon to us, injured.

We nursed him back to health, and since he can’t go back to the wild, he’s our official store spokesbird.

He follows me everywhere around the store. Sometimes I can’t tell if I’m his best friend or his worst enemy.

Kukla has made some amazing progress the last couple of weeks.

She’s still not quite ready for “step up”, but she’s getting there!!

Considering the abuse and neglect she grew up in, I’m incredibly proud of her!

Today marks 17 years since I quit smoking!!

I’m so happy to share this today, as I hope it may help serve as motivation for others who are thinking about quitting or currently fighting through their quit.

You can do it! I smoked for 23 years, and for 10 of those, I was at 2 packs a day. But I decided to quit, and my method was the Nicorette lozenge.

I started them as directed, then over the following 3 months, I weaned myself off of the lozenges and was totally nicotine-free.

If I can do it, so can you!

I set up a “Pickles Cam” so I can keep and eye on him while I’m not home.

I don’t leave him out of his cage unattended, though. But all of his time is spent outside the cage when I’m home.

Today was the first time in 2 months that this sweet girl, a surrender from animal control, has let anyone touch her.

I work a few days a week at my local pet store, and a couple of months ago, animal control brought Kukla (the Greek word for beautiful, so I’m told) to us.

Her owner had died, and she was alone in her cage for days before anyone knew what had happened. She had no food or water, and it was clear she had not been socialized in years.

She was in absolute terror, and would scream and flap anytime anyone got within a foot of her cage. She would attack me every time I went to change her food/water, and I’ve lost a couple of flaps of skin on my hands to her.

Anyway, being as that I’m a ridiculous animal lover who believes there are few things more amazing than earning an animal’s trust, I took that as a challenge.

So I’ve been working with her, very slowly, on “be nice” and “no bites” and today was the first time she offered me her neck. Up until today, she’d only let me barely touch her beak and the top of her head. But today when I got to work, it was as though a light switched on for her.

She still has a long way to go, and I’m the only one that can touch her, but she’s calmed down and is doing much better. She’s going to be with us for some time, so I’ll get to continue working with her in the coming months.

I’m hoping to get her to “step up” next week.

Got my first bird a couple weeks ago, and today I finally got my little buddy Pickles’ permanent house set up.

Pickles is my first-ever bird, and I couldn’t be happier to have my new animal buddy.
