It's a tick, right? If so what kind?

Just pulled this little fella off of me before it started to dig in. I'm guessing it's a tick. If so, what kind of tick? I'm in south eastern north Carolina for reference.

Flock's 80,000 AI-Powered Surveillance Cameras Can Find Your Car Even If You Don't Have A License Plate - Jalopnik

If you aren't mad about Flock cameras, then I don't know how to help you, but maybe this little nugget of information can convince you to dislike being under constant surveillance and having your every move tracked by an AI-based tech startup. Flock cameras are technically classified as Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs), which are used by law enforcement to build a database of every car that passes one of the company's 80,000 cameras across 49 states. In a shocking turn of events that nobody could've ever foreseen, however, these constantly operational cameras capture and analyze more than just license plates.

Flock says its cameras don’t track people. Its own training videos say otherwise.

Flock says its cameras capture isolated moments rather than track people’s movements.

But its own training materials reportedly show users tracking vehicles “from location to location to location,” while Condor cameras can automatically acquire and follow people as they walk.

The investigation also found that dozens of cameras were openly streaming online without passwords, and it highlights documented cases of officers allegedly misusing the system to stalk former partners.

This is why the public debate cannot stop at “it’s just a license plate reader.”

The camera on the pole is only the part you can see.

Two Boulder residents filed a class action to shut down the city's 31 Flock cameras, arguing warrantless tracking violates the Colorado constitution

Two residents in Boulder, Colorado filed a class action lawsuit this week asking a district court to shut down the city's entire license plate camera network. They argue the 31 Flock cameras track people driving and biking through the city without a warrant, in violation of the state constitution.

One of the plaintiffs is Will Freeman, who runs DeFlock, a site that maps these cameras across the country. Their attorney's core argument is that nearly everyone the cameras record has nothing to do with any crime, which makes it dragnet surveillance Colorado does not allow.

What the suit is asking for:

  • A judge to declare the 31 cameras unconstitutional
  • An order blocking the city from using them
  • Class action status covering people recorded without suspicion

Flock's response is that similar challenges have repeatedly failed and courts have upheld the technology.

Camera at Wrightsville Beach.

I spotted this camera across from Bevvy while walking the loop. It faces down the street towards the bridge. It looks like a normal traffic camera, but it also shows up on deflock.
