Thoughts on A-Frames?

I am a complete newbie when it comes to campers! I have always tent camped, and lately I've been staying in park cottages/cabins, but lately I've been thinking about a very small camper--I'm getting to old to sleep on the ground, and the park cottages are so popular, you have to reserve them months in advance.

Anyway, I was recently at a campground where somebody had an A-frame trailer, and it really appealed to me. I liked how it looked, it seemed like it would be a manageable size to tow and store. They seem to show up on the secondhand market for very reasonable prices, and would be towable with a vehicle comparable to the one I have now.

So, what else should I know, about them?

I would be camping solo with a dog, so I don't need a whole lot of space. My tow vehicle will probably be a minivan--that's what I have now, but it's old enough to vote, so I think I'll probably need to car-shop before I can camper-shop, but I'm not looking to get a truck or anything too huge.

Thoughts on A-Frames?

I saw one at a campground recently, and immediately thought that it was something I could see myself owning. I drive a minivan, so I would need something very light, and conventional popups have never appealed to me, but the A-frame hits different.

Up to now, I've either tent camped, or stayed in park "cottages"--basically just 4 walls and a roof, bunks, and electricity--so I don't think I'd particularly miss the amenities of a bigger RV. But I'm getting too old to sleep on the ground, and the cottages are only at certain parks, and have to be reserved way in advance, so some kind of "tent on wheels" setup might be what I need.

Does anyone have experience with these, good or bad? I've already heard that they can be a gateway drug to a larger RV, which is fine. Are there hidden costs, maintenance & storage concerns, etc., that as a complete noob to RVs, I may not think of?

What else is there to do around French Creek State Park/Hopewell Furnace?

I went to Hopewell Furnace last weekend, and did a craft activity they were running for the Founder's Day iron pour. Now I have to go back this weekend and pick up my cast iron thingamabob that I made, and I'm trying to find something else to do in that area to make the drive feel more worthwhile.

Plan B is to go to French Creek and hike or kayak or fish or something, but I could do any of those things *without* driving an hour and a half, so I'm trying to find something more special. Had a look on Maps, but nothing's jumping out at me.

Taking my Inlet to Lake Erie!

Before anyone gets too excited, this was a quick paddle from the Elk Creek access, in Erie Bluffs State Park (Pennsylvania), to the mouth of the creek at Lake Erie. The creek was so lazy that even after paddling both ways, I'm not sure whether it goes into Erie or out of it. But I did technically go to Lake Erie in my Inlet. (Mostly just so I could say I had.)

What to do in and around Pymatuning State park this summer?

I'm vacationing in a state park cabin at Pymatuning for a week in July. I stay in park cabins all the time, but I've never been to this one. Any recommendations on things to do, in and around the park? I'm already thinking about a day trip to Lake Erie, probably midweek, but I could use some more ideas.

First Rita's Bag of the Summer! Pennsylvania, USA

Rita's is about the only place in my town that consistently has bags. $6.99 for this--might be a hair under value, but not bad. Two small ices, a gelati, and the sour blue pucker specialty gelati. They don't tell you the flavors, but the ices are something with orange and something with coconut, and the custard part of the gelati is something with caramel.

Need to make sure I'm not being excessively prissy here...

I just picked up a bag from a local convenience store, that consists of several dozen cured-meat-and-cheese snack packs, all of which are at least three months past their sell-by date, and a few are four months past.

There are also two containers of sour cream with best-by dates in December and January of last year, and six flavored chocolate milk drinks with dates in November of last year.

I know there's some wiggle room on best-by dates, but my immediate thought is that this is a bag of garbage. If it was chips or cookies, I'd definitely eat it three months past date, but these are meat and dairy products.

Edit: Okay, thanks, I have heard from enough people now to be sure that my initial reaction was correct; I've thrown it all out & reported to TGTG; they're processing a refund. I also tried to get through to the complaint-bot that it should be reviewed by an actual human being who might be in a position to evaluate the store's suitability to be on the app; I'm not sure if it worked, but I did what I could.

Imagine thread: The Plums in Canada

Just for fun, let's imagine that Agnes and all her friends escape to Canada shortly after the end of S1. (Somehow! For the purposes of this game, I'm just assuming they all got there in some relatively straightforward and non-traumatic way. As a treat.)

  • Once they get settled in and have the basics taken care of, and they're ready to start exploring their new freedoms, what would each one want to do first? (Of course, when it's Hulda's turn to pick, it'll be a zoo trip!)
  • How do they feel about trying non-Gilead-approved clothes, hairstyles, makeup, etc? Who starts experimenting first, and what do they try?
  • What do they find most surprising? Relatedly, what do they encounter that they absolutely were not expecting to be different?
  • When they start catching up on their education, what subjects do they like best? What ideas do they have about what they might want to study or do for work in the future?
  • What do they miss about Gilead, or find hard to adjust to in Canada?

Feel free to add any other questions/prompts you want to answer, or read other people's thoughts about.
