Thermometer with alarm recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a thermometer that will beep when it hits a certain temp? The only part of yogurt making that I don’t like is checking back frequently to see when I’ve hit the target temperatures.

Needing new starter?

My last batch of yogurt came out too thin and tangy. Some of the recommendation I’ve read online suggest that you should replace the starter after every few batches, but I remember a Lebanese friend telling me that their family had been making yogurt from the same starter line for generations. Any suggestions?

(I used reduced fat milk heated to 190 degrees, cooled to 90, and placed in an incubator for 10 hours. I left it longer than usual because it seemed thin. I get that that would cause the tanginess. But my question is really about whether I need a new starter every few weeks/months.)

What subscription gimmick is your orchestra running? Do you like it?

Our symphony seems to change their subscriptions and pass programs every year. This year’s requires me to pick all my concert dates and my actual seats before it will tell me what the cost will be. They also changed their season pass option which I really liked. I’m curious what these look like for other venues and what people prefer.

What are minor league teams doing to respond to rising temperatures?

I used to love to go to games, but it’s so damn hot all of the time now that it’s a lot less appealing. I know some clubs are building stadiums with more indoor seating, but it’s just not the same experience. And I miss day games. Is there any talk of moving the season further into fall?

Special access for not idiots

I am someone who will always do a thorough search for a possible solution before I contact customer service. I think people like me should be able to apply for something akin to TSA Pre or Global Entry that lets us bypass the AI Assistant that’s just going to waste our time.

Why wouldn’t the Saudis develop solar first?

Politics and security concerns side, why do the Saudis want nuclear power? They have oil. Although they haven’t developed it, I’d imagine a country with 3238 annual hours of sunshine would be ripe for solar power. Nuclear power requires a lot of water, which Saudi Arabia doesn’t have. So, why the interest in civilian nuclear power production?

Why does the U.S. get to decide who has nuclear weapons?

It’s pretty clear that having nuclear capabilities gives you more leverage with the rest of the world, so why does the U.S. get to decide who does and doesn’t have them?

Why not wear hearing aids people can see?

There seems to be a lot of worry about whether or not people can see hearing aids. I even notice that more and more women my age have changed their hairstyle to cover their ears. But why? It seems to me that if people know you have hearing aids it gives them the opportunity to try to look at you when they’re talking and speak more clearly. We wouldn’t expect someone who needs a cane to carry a clear one so it’s less noticeable. I don’t think less of someone because they wear glasses. Why all the embarrassment around hearing aids?

Best place to be a classical music lover

In a few years I’ll be able to move anywhere within the United States. If you could make that decision based solely on the classical music scene (including chamber music and new music) where would you go? What if citizenship wasn’t an issue and it could be anywhere in the world?

Marketing advice for musicians

For an ongoing project of mine, I spend a lot of time on the websites and social media of musicians. Three recommendations: One, always include the year when you list the date for a concert or event. People forget that the Internet is forever and users are going to have a hard time knowing if your July 14 concert is upcoming or was last year or the year before. Two, provide the venue and location even if you are including a link. This is helpful to your user but it will also increase your chances of being found by a web search. Three, try to keep your engagements listings up to date. So many people appear to be inactive on their own page but then I find concert dates on other pages.

I regret that we are living in an age when musicians cannot just focus on making music but also have to be their own press agents and promoters but here we are.

Conductor vibes

As a fan but not a musician, I am always curious about the relationship between the musicians and the conductor. I have enough musician friends to know that the feelings between the two can range widely. I’m curious, what are the ways an audience member can tell if the musicians like a conductor, especially a visiting conductor. Eye contact? Smiles? A little extra joy in the performance?

Anyone have more info on Fisk data center?

The reports of Fisk building a data center seem fishy to me. I worry that corporations are finding a work around by hiding a data center at an HBCU thinking they might get less pushback from the community, because liberals won’t go up against an HBCU. Pres. Clark won’t disclose who they’re partnering with or where the money is coming from. There are claims of job creation, but data centers employ very few people. Most importantly, what’s the value of a data center to a non-profit university? Anyone have more information than what’s being reported in the press.
