Ashok Leyland Tiger. 1985 model.

This is another variant of the Tiger buses from the 80s. All buses which predate MMK2218 (in pic) were of this design before MMK2219 came with a new Tallboy-like design. These had the longest wheelbase and strongest engines of BEST at that time. Just like how most of the other buses from the late 70s and 80s era, they were rebuilt in 1996 with a new "wide body" design similar to the Vikings from that era if you refer to my earlier posts; though I could not find much pics of the rebuilt 3xxx series Tiger buses predating MMK2218 and herself. As you would guess, the lifespan policy from the 2000s reduced it's life by 2 years and retired it in 2005 instead of 2007 to meet emission standards.

Ashok Leyland Tiger. 1986 model.

Introduced in 1986 and retired in 2005. Buses MMK2219 and onwards of the Tiger batch of 1986 had this new design which was popular in those days. They were also called the "Latniwala" buses or "Tincans". Sometime in the 90s, the sliding windows were replaced to drop down ones and in 1996 they were completely rebuilt to a new design to the one in the 2nd pic which was a new trend in those days. They were retired in 2005 instead of 2007 due to a new policy which brought down the lifespan from 21 years to 15. The series 3950 - 3975 batch of Tigers predates the 5xxx series Tiger Tallboys introduced from that same year which is to be posted soon.

4/7/26 CORRECTION: The second pic is actually a rebuilt Tiger TALLBOY model, refer to my comment on the actual rebuilt version.
I just realised it as the one in the 1st pic is of the aforementioned 39xx series of buses, but the second pic is of a 5xxx series model which was a Tiger Tallboy model which was rebuilt. Apologies..s

Ashok Leyland Viking Super. 1987 model.

Introduced in 1987 and retired in 2006. The first Viking Super buses were of the 1987 "Tallboy" batches, called so because of their narrower width and ventilators on top of windows. These were the most reliable and classic single decks at that time with atleast a 1000 of them spread all across the city. The last bus of this type was scrapped in 2007 without requiring any rebuilds.

TATA 1512TC CNG. 2008 model.

Introduced in 2008, retired in 2023. Most of the 2008 batch of Tata CNG buses were rebuilt in 2016 to the one you see in the 2nd picture, the rebuild was due to poor construction of the original bodies. Notice the change from sliding windows to drop down windows post rebuild, installation of digital route boards and change in headlights. Even the roof was made slightly thinner to accomodate the side destination board.

Ashok Leyland Viking Double Decker. 1990 model.

Introduced in 1990 and retired in 2007, it could not complete the last years of its service life due to the reduced lifespan policy in the 2000s. The 1990 batch of Viking Four Frame DDs were rebuilt in 2000 to what you see in the 2nd pic. A few key changes were

  • The "D" shaped window at the front top deck was replaced
  • Front top deck windows had a rod added for safety
  • Rear bus windows were changed from mono to double glass frames
  • Front overhang was slightly increased
  • Dual headlights were changed to single
