My psychiatrist referred me to the ADHD team in hope I can manage my symptoms.
This is exactly the issue with how ADHD is treated in this country with a lot of people.
If you go through stuff like homelessness, prison, addiction, severe mental health issues etc.
They won't help you. Yet these things are far more likely with those with ADHD.
ADHD impacts 2-5% of adults
Yet:
32% of homeless people have ADHD
25% of prisoners have ADHD
60% of people with severe mental health (schizo disorders, bipolar, psychosis) have ADHD
23% of addicts have ADHD
So many of us are just being left to rot.
I was homeless 16-19 and then again 22 to 25 and because of that I ended up developing severe MH issues (schizoaffective disorder, C-PTSD.) Im 31 now and I feel my life is a constant state of flux. I go from being manic/psychotic, to taking my medication for a few weeks and then stabilising, but then because of various ADHD factors, I procrastinate taking my meds, picking my meds up or doing healthy shit and then once I start going psychotic again I grow fearful of my meds. Rinse and repeat.
Im aware of the reasons why stimulant meds wont be good for me and to be honest I agree. I know I would take a lot at once to chase the dopamine, I know they might make me psychotic. However, without help for ADHD I wont be able to leave psychosis/mania for any reasonable time to fix my life. There's non stimulant medication out there and Im sure theres CBT out there but they take one look at my file and think its too much hard work.
I feel trapped.
