Machine not working after descaling

Machine not working after descaling

I have a Nespresso C113 machine that I descaled this morning.

The descaling appeared to be successful, I ran the water/descale mix through twice, then ran two full containers of fresh water through, and put the machine back to normal mode.

When I now go to use it the two buttons light up as I would expect, when I press the 'long' button it flashes as expected, but the water pump never starts and after about the 6 seconds the light stops flashing.

I've unplugged it for about an hour, then after plugging it back in I press one of the buttons to wake it up, the buttons flash for several seconds (I assume while warming up) and then go solid, but when I press one of the buttons the machine makes no noise, the button I pressed flashes for 6 seconds, and then returns to two solid lights.

I did put it back into descale mode (hold buttons for 5 seconds until they start rapidly flashing) but in this mode the long button does not start the descale process when I press it. When I put it back into normal mode I have the same issue with the pump just not running.

Have I killed my coffee machine, or is there something else I can try?

Is it too late for this tree?

There is a relatively young tree that the Council planted next to where I live. I think it's been struggling over the last few weeks, there's been noticeable leaf loss. I've taken to watering it each evening over the last two weeks, I pour several litres of water down the watering tube (at least I hope that's what that is) and another few litres onto the soil/earth.

Apologies for the low quality images (taking photos of trees on the street is more difficult than I expected). I know nothing about gardening or plant care and while I'll almost certainly keep watering the tree each evening more in hope than expectation, is there anything I can do to confirm the tree is still alive, or anything else I can do to help?

Heathrow - What caused 9 flights to depart late, and at ~0200 this morning?

TLDR;
Did something happen at Heathrow last night to cause 9 flights from Terminal 4 to depart late, between 0145 and 0225 when departure restrictions are in place?

----

I live about 8 km from Heathrow, and right under the flightpath for a lot of aircraft departing towards central London (they pass over my flat at about 2,500 - 3,000 ft.).

The aircraft were here long before me, will be here long after me, and I've got pretty good at filtering out the noise. It's more difficult in the summer when all my windows are open, but we get some respite overnight as Heathrow is subject to restrictions between 2300 and 0600.

I got woken up at about 0150 this morning as Omar Air flight WY102 to Muscat passed overhead. I hoped I'd get back to sleep pretty quickly, but over the next ~35 minutes a further 8 long haul flights took off.

QTR1V  - Qatar to Doha
CES552 - China Eastern Airlines to Shanghai
RWD711 - Rwandair to Kigali
CSN304 - China Southern Airlines to Guangzhou
SVA118 - Saudia to Dammam
GFA006 - Gulf Air to Bahrain
ELY318 - El Al to Tel Aviv
MAS1 - Malaysia Airline to Kuala Lumpur

Did something happen at Heathrow last night to cause several flights to be delayed? All those Airlines operate out of Heathrow's Terminal 4, and when I googled the flight numbers some of them were listed as "Runway Delay".

What is going on with this radiator pipe?

Redecorating room, moved some furniture prior to starting cleaning and painting next week (so excuse the dust), prior to new carpets being laid.

Discovered this. I assume it's the copper oxidising, any chance I can just clean and paint it, or is this going to need a replacement section of pipe?

-----

Update:

General consensus is there's been a slight leak, for a long time. I'd tackle replacing the valve, but I have no idea how bad the copper pipe is. I might try and clean it with some wire wool to see just how bad it is, but if the pipe is bad then this feels like it has the potential to go quickly wrong, so I think I'd be looking for a plumber.

Help identify Rotring pens, and suggest refills

I need a pen and pencil to live in the bag I now carry with me when I'm out, and while digging around in my desk drawer desk I re-discovered two Rotring multi pen/pencil models that I haven't used in years.

I'm not sure what model the two pens are, I think one of them might be a "trio", but I'm not sure;

  • One of the pens has three 'options', with markings around the barrel for a 'normal' pen, a 0.7mm mechanical pencil, and some sort of 'bright' pen.
  • The second pen has four options, a 'normal' pen, a 0.5mm mechanical pencil, the same sort of 'bright' pen, and a stylus designed for a resistive touchscreen (like a Palm Pilot, or Sony CLIÉ).
  • The main barrel of both pens is 130mm long (minus the cap).
  • The lower removable barrels are 9.8mm in diameter.
  • The upper barrel of the '3' pen is 9.2mm, upper barrel of the '4' pen is 9.8mm (same as the lower barrel).
  • The stylus on the '4' pen does not appear to be removable.
  • I believe the refills are of the D1 type, but stupidly I removed and binned the main refill from the '3' model years ago when it ran out.

I'm particularly interested in using the '3' model as I prefer a 0.7mm pencil (and I have no use for a stylus in the '4' model, especially as it doesn't appear to be removable), but I don't know the model number of the pen to confirm what refills I need.

Assuming it is a D1, then some quick research suggests I probably want the following;

  • Uni JETSTREAM - Refill - 0.5mm - Black - SXR-200-05

But I'm curious what I could replace the 'bright' refill with, it says "Rotring Made in Germany", but I can't read the number on the side.

I assume I can replace it with any D1 type refill, so I was wondering what other interesting options were available?

-----

Edit:
I think the model with 4 pens is the "Rotring Quattro-MultiPen" or the “Rotring Axtension Data Pen”, and uses Rotring 'Magic View' system to select pens (basically, gravity. Hold the symbol for the pen you want facing up, and the button will extend that pen).

ARM 64 based VM image won't run in Fusion on Mac

TLDR
An Oracle Linux ARM 64-Bit based VM exported from VirtualBox, which is imported into VMware Fusion on an M4 Mac Mini won't start because "it requires the X86 machine architecture".

I have an issue trying to run a VM exported from VirtualBox and imported into VMware Fusion on an M4 Mac Mini.

  • I'm running a Home Assistant OS instance under VirtualBox running on an M4 Mac Mini running macOS.
  • When I built the VM I used the 'haos_generic-aarch64-17.2' image which reports as "Oracle Linux (ARM 64-bit)" and the running VM behaves as expected.
  • Unfortunately I'm having issues with HOAS that appear to be related to VirtualBox rather than HAOS.
  • I want to try running HAOS under VMware, so I exported the VM from VirtualBox as an .ova file.
  • I opened the .ova file in VMware Fusion Pro 26H1, the file appears to have imported successfully.
  • When I start the VM I get the following error;

>This virtual machine cannot be powered on because it requires the X86 machine architecture, which is incompatible with this Arm machine architecture host.
See KB-84273.

I'm confused.
The original image is an ARM 64-bit image, and was successfully running under VirtualBox on an ARM platform, I've imported it into a version of VMware Fusion that supports Apple Silicon, and yet Fusion is complaining that the VM is expecting the X86 architecture.

What have I done wrong, and how can I fix it?

Getting Wi-Fi access 25 metres from rear of property

This is a pretty dumb use case, but I have a small 1st floor flat. Two UniFi APs provide excellent coverage throughout the entire flat.

I don't have a garden so during the summer I regularly sit in the beer garden of the pub next door, mobile reception is pretty poor, but it's only about 25 metres from the rear of my flat, which is just close enough for my phone and tablet devices to sometimes think they have a weak Wi-Fi signal, but for it not to actually work.

I did try moving one of the APs (an AC HD) next to a window right at the rear of the property, but it didn't improve service.

I could stick an AP on the rear of the flat, which has line of sight to the pub garden.
Assuming I was bored/stupid enough to want to set up Wi-Fi access in the pub, what would a suitable AP be? I don't need much throughput, it doesn't have to be new kit, and I'd be happy with unplugging when I don't want to use it.

Any suggestions?

The Captive's War - No longer listed in TVDB

The Captive's War series was removed from TheTVDB.com. It did have tvdb ID 457634, and it doesn't appear when I search for it on tvdb.

Does anyone know if there has been a change to status of the show's development, or is this just an odd tvdb update?

Superloop - Electric buses starting to roll out on the SL7 route

I read the articles about the fleet of electric BYD BD11 buses being purchased for the SL7 route.
While this route still uses the diesel Wright/Volvo B9TLs, I saw my first BD11 during the week, EBD168 as it passes the Maddison Close stop on Park Road in Teddington.

I regularly use this service (just 1 stop for local travel) but I haven't yet been on the new buses, the B9TLs still operate the majority of services.

Shepperton Branch line closed due to rain flooding in June

We had very heavy rain early morning of the 2nd June. So much so that the tracks by the bridge over the A311 Wellington Road in Fulwell flooded. I happened to be out walking (in the rain) and took these photos at Fulwell station at 0830 on the 2nd.

Speaking to a Network Rail engineer at the station he mentioned that this was the first time the track had flooded at this spot since they installed drainage pumps at Strawberry Hill several years ago.

The rain has eased off, but I'm surprised that the line is still closed the following morning. Last Tuesday in South West London we had 35°C temperatures, this Tuesday lines are closed due to heavy rain.

Edit;
Looks like normal service was restored on Thursday 4th, two days after the line was closed.

TLDR;
I have several temp/humidity sensors that I use to monitor my flat, they all became unavailable at the same time (8:25pm 26th April). Not sure where to start looking to fix it.

https://preview.redd.it/489uydadhayg1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=89f736b6b02e61b6cc3a8f4895d3f2be0bea9320

I'm running the current version of HAOS as a VM under VirtualBox on macOS 15.7.4.

I have six IKEA TIMMERFLOTTE sensors in my flat, and an Apple TV 4K 3rd gen acting as a hub (with an Apple TV 4K 2nd gen, and a HomePod Mini also on the network). I added the IKEA sensors using the Apple Home app, and they all report data in the Home app.

I then used the "Turn On Pairing Mode" function in the Home app to add the devices to HAOS, and all went well. HAOS been happily logging data from the sensors for about a month.

I checked last night and all six TIMMERFLOTTE sensors are unavailable, and looking at the history they all appear to have 'disappeared' at the same time.
I can see the current temp/humidity for all rooms in the Apple Home app, so the sensors appear to be working correctly, but HAOS can't 'see' them.

I've used the IKEA app, a TRÅDFRI hub, and Apple Home to control some older IKEA lights, but I'm new to HAOS and IKEA's matter/thread devices, so I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting, so I'm looking for some pointers.

Can anyone suggest where I should start looking?
