Parenting Today

Kind of a two-way question here. How much do y'all play with your kids vs how much did your parents play with you when you were kids?

Honestly, I feel like my parents were very present, one or both were always around, but I barely recall playing with them at all.

I'm not a full-blood Gen-X, I'm an elder Millennial, so I'm sad to say I missed out on the days of extreme free-range, but I certainly played all around the neighborhood without supervision.

My parents were almost never outside watching us. I was in the pool, on my bike, sneaking through the bushes with a super-soaker, trekking through the fields/creeks, making forts, disassembling my walkie-talkies, and cutting/sharpening sticks into arrows to use with my sling-shot.

The last time my mom pitched a baseball to me, I was maybe 6 years old. I eventually just threw the ball straight upward so I could hit it myself.

Also around the age of 6, I can recall my dad helping me with one of my first Lego sets on the dining room table. Just that one set though, and after that I was on my own for good.

Again, my parent were there all the time. They were just doing their own stuff.
I am sure this is very common for the rest of the folks in this sub. At my friend's houses, we saw their parents at lunch time, that's it. They brought out the hotdogs and Kraft Dinner, they weren't hovering any more than my own parents.

My own kids... I basically play with them, or directly supervise them all the time. I'm always pitching, biking, skating, helping with Lego, swimming, just watching them, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I love playing with my kids. I like playing baseball again, I like tennis, I like biking and skating, I like Lego more than my kids do, etc. ....but... why can't they do it on their own?

If I'm tied up, my kids just can't seem to play.

What are your experiences?

1.25" Hoses

Where do y'all get 1.25" hoses?

I have a cheap pool that takes 3 of them, and they break after 1 year in the sun, so I need to replace them all the time.

I got some hoses off Amazon, but they felt like lower quality than the pool came with, and I'm hoping I can find something that will last a little longer.

For reference, I believe Intex and Bestway largely use the same 1.25" clear hoses for the pump.

In every store I've been to, they only sell 1.5" hoses, and everything I buy online is worse quality.

Reebok Kobo 2 Slides

I've been wearing these slides for the past 20 years.

It's a crime they aren't available today.

Mine are *almost* worn through. Anyone else holding desperately onto theirs?

Also, if someone from the Reebok vault is reading this and is worried about what I'm going to wear after the only acceptable slides finally wear through, I'm a US size 12.

MLB 2026 Switch - Couch VS

Can you play local multiplayer right on the same console?

My kid just wants to play vs a friend right on the same couch, two controllers, one switch.

Can't figure it out for the life of me.

[TOMT][MOVIE][60s-80s]TV Christmas Movie Featuring a Christmas Rose and an Elderly Woman

My mother has been trying to figure out this movie, possibly direct to TV, possibly an episode of a TV series, featuring a "Christmas Rose" for the past 30 years.

I don't have a good idea for how old it is, but if I had to guess, I would say it's from the 70's.

The only real details she can remember are these:

There is an older woman, spinster or widow. An acquaintance is asking her what she wants for Christmas, her reply is "just my Christmas rose". My wording is flawed I'm sure, but she effectively says that all she wants for Christmas is her Christmas rose.

This woman receives a single rose every year at Christmas from a secret source, admirer or acquaintance. This has been going on for many years. She doesn't know who it's from.

The source ends up being revealed, but I believe only to the audience.

Maytag Dishwasher "Sometimes" Leaks a Small Amount of Suds

For the past few weeks, every other cycle, my dishwasher will leak a small amount of suds or soapy foam.

I can't seem to figure out where it's coming from, because the floor under the washer is clean and dry. It seems to be coming exactly from the door, right near the bottom (because nothing seems wet except the suds on the floor, right under the door).

I've tried watching it with a camera during cycles several time, but it never leaks when I watch. I intend to keep monitoring it to see where the suds are coming from, but I thought I'd ask here if anyone experienced something similar.

Frigidaire Range F10 Runaway Heat

My Frigidaire Range got an F10 error, runaway heating.

Happened during a normal bake (not cleaning). I flipped the breaker and disconnected it once cool.

When I restore power, the range does not start heating again unless I set a bake temperature.

If I do turn it on bake, the temp will run away again. I tried heating to 200, and it went well past (300), before I shut it off again.

The thermocouple is fine. Good resistance (1090ohm) including the wire harness and cable. Additionally, in the above described test, I briefly set the bake temp to 400, which is how I knew it had reached 300 (because it displayed the temp, the only time the oven displays the actual temperature instead of the setpoint is when it is in pre-heat, silly design...).

The control board is a $350 item, but the relays are cheap.

I suspect a stuck bake relay, but I do hear relays clicking on and off while it preheats. Also, when I power cycle it, it won't just immediately start heating. Is there another relay that gates the bake relays? Am I possibly dealing with something else?
