LWRC IC SPR

She's a bit heavy, but she's still beautiful.

I posted my digital mockup in an earlier post, but here is an actual pic of the LWRC IC SPR in its current form. I've had it for over 10 years and shot thousands of rounds through it, and it has never had a malfunction that wasn't my fault. Eventually I will replace the Aimpoint Pro with a T2 and Juliet 4 magnifier.

Build list:

- 14.5" LWRC IC SPR - OD Greed
- LWRC stock, grip, & rail scales
- LWRC backup iron sights
- Geissele SD-E trigger
- Surefire mini-scout w/ Arisaka FDE body
- Aimpoint Pro
- Griffin Armament Dual-Lok TACTICAL COMPENSATOR
- Griffin Armament Dual-Lok hub adapter
- CAT WB 718 Hub Suppressor
- Radian Raptor Charging Handle - NIB
- Radian Talon safety selector - NIB
- ODIN Works XMR 2 Extended Mag Release FDE

AR-15 Rifle Build Projects - Mockups & Parts List

Here is a mockup of the two AR-15 builds that I have been working on for a while. Both rifles are multi-year projects, but I'm hoping to have them both set up as shown below by the end of the year. I just need the optics to finish the LWRC IC SPR. I still need the upper from Thoroughbred Armament and an OCM6 to finish the Gordon carbine. Full parts list below. Let me know your thoughts.

Top Rifle:

- 14.5" LWRC IC SPR - OD Greed
- LWRC stock, grip, & rail scales
- LWRC backup iron sights
- Geissele SD-E trigger
- Surefire mini-scout w/ Arisaka FDE body
- Aimpoint T2 FDE w/ Scalarworks Leap Mount
- Sig Juliet 4x Magnifier FDE
- Griffin Armament Dual-Lok TACTICAL COMPENSATOR
- Griffin Armament Dual-Lok hub adapter
- CAT WB 718 Hub Suppressor
- Radian Raptor Charging Handle - NIB
- Radian Talon safety selector - NIB
- ODIN Works XMR 2 Extended Mag Release FDE

Bottom Rifle:

- PSA Stealth Lower
- Rare Breed FRT-15L3 trigger

Rare Breed FRT-15L3 Experience So Far + Some Design Suggestions

I'm not getting into politics or patent wars. I will only be discussing the product itself. I have no affiliation with Rare Breed, and I was gifted this trigger for my birthday by a very generous friend, so I have no monetary investment into their products.

The FRT-15L3 is a single stage trigger with a 3-position selector, safe, semi-auto, and forced reset. The RB three position FRT feels basically identical to a true three position full-auto, and you operate the selector the same way.

Out of the box, the trigger feels very high quality, the packaging is well thought out, and it took about 5 minutes to install on a PSA stealth lower with a Geissele super 42 spring and their H3 buffer. The installation was the easiest trigger installation I've done and everything fit together tightly.

I'm building a Gordon carbine style build for use with the PSA lower and Rare Breed FRT, but I have shot the FRT-15L3 on two different uppers so far, an 14.5 inch LWRC IC SPR and a 16 inch Geissele Super Duty. The Geissele Super Duty was shot unsuppressed and the LWRC IC SPR was shot unsuppressed, and with a CAT WB suppressor with a Griffin Dual lok hub adapter. I shot about 1,000 rounds so far with the RB FRT, and everything functioned perfectly with both uppers and I had zero malfunctions with either upper.

The trigger pull in normal semi-auto feels good. It's far smoother than I expected and it is much nicer than any mill-spec trigger that I've shot, or even the upgraded LWRC mill spec+ trigger that came with my LWRC. If you are looking for it, you can feel the trigger "slap" a bit in normal semi mode while dry firing and then charging the gun while holding down the trigger, but I didn't notice any trigger "slap" while actually shooting it semi-auto, or even while shooting it in "FRT" mode. I have not shot their new two-stage trigger (FRT-15C3), but I assume it's nicer than even this one, so it's great to see RB already releasing new models that improve the semi-auto trigger pull.

I used to need to pull the changing handle back while holding the upper and lower receivers together to get them to close completely, and then I could push the second pin in without an issue. I'm not sure if it just needed to break in, but I don't need to pull the charging handle to the rear anymore, and it now seems to go together and close up as easily as every other normal AR-15 upper and lower.

There are two very small changes that I think might improve the Rare Breed FRT-15 triggers (I say "might" because I don't know for sure, as there may be important reasons for why RB made the choices they made that I am not aware of).

First, there are small gaps around the trigger bow in the hole of the lower receiver that the trigger bow sticks out of when the trigger is installed. While unlikely to ever be an issue, my other triggers don't have these gaps (see the Geissele shown in the photo). I imagine that a more sealed fitment with less gaps fitment could help keep dirt and debris out if the rifle is ever exposed to any extremely dirty environment.

Second, the selector lever retention screws. One of my selector lever screws loosened up a bit while dry firing and fidgeting with it at home (not while shooting). I tightened it up and haven't had an issue since. I really do like the ambi-selector levers RB currently uses. They are simple, they work well, and they look good. They also fit tightly and changing between safe, semi, and FRT feels satisfying. It has the perfect amount of resistance and changing feels very tactile and "clicky".

All that said, I still prefer the detent-pin style of retention used on safety selectors like the Radian "Talon" and the Geissele "Super Configurable Safety Selector". It makes installing or switching out the levers much easier, and it also just seems to be a more secure retention system than torx screws. Using torx screws also requires using something like Loctite make sure the selectors don't come loose, which isn't a big deal, but it makes changing them out less convenient, and I don't trust it as much as I do the detention pins on the Geissele or Radian selector levers.

I'd love to see Rare Breed offer some different style, length, and color options for their safety selector levers in the future, and if its possible for them to switch to using detent pins to secure the levers on any future selector models they release, I think that would also be a small but welcome improvement in the design. Those suggestions may seem like nit-picking, but it is admittedly difficult to improve an already outstanding product, which the Rare Breed FRT-15L3 absolutely is.

There seems to be a new FRT out every day now, and some seem to be quite good, and Rare Breed still seems to be the most expensive one out there, but it also definitely think it is still the best one on the market. I didn't pay for this trigger, but after shooting one, I would absolutely pay for it if I didn't have it.

If you want an FRT that is super easy to install, very durable, and extremely reliable, it is hard to beat a Rare Breed. I used to think FRT's were gimmicks, but this trigger has converted me.

I know HK released this color scheme in the mr556 a4 and mr762 a4 as 16 inch rifles with Cabelas / Bass Pro Shop. I wanted to see what this color scheme would look like on an 11.5 rifle / pistol, so I mocked one up on the computer to see what it would look like. If they ever release some like this, I will probably have to make some financially irresponsible choices.
