Level 1 attempts questions- Recovery questions

I bought a Featherlight Swift tracker AND Jolly Logic Chute release- In the interest of KISS principles should I forego the chute release. Launching a 4" Loc EZI-65 on an H283 with a projected altitude of 1620 or so.

Didn't get ahead- Can't take Calc BC senior year

Freshman-Junior year Algebra, Geometry and Precalc (all A so far). Rising Junior. No AP math yet.

Would it be a good option to take AP AB online summer between Junior and Senior year (not even sure would register it through school), Then take DE Calc I and II at a local community college senior year.

Freshman and Sophmore took honors English, Sophomore year took AP World, Junior year AP Lit, AP Physics, APUSH. Maybe senior take AP Chem. Just make sure to do well in Calc I and II.

Aerospace/astro engineering with big dreams.

Here is what is available:

  • Math and Computer Science: Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, and Computer Science.
  • Sciences: Biology/Earth science options, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Physics.
  • History and Social Sciences: United States History, World History: Modern, US Government & Politics, and Psychology.
  • Arts and Languages: Art and world language options like French and Spanish

Net price calculator with twins?

How does this work? I have rising juniors-

Son is definitely going to college-
Daughter is likely taking a different path- Firefighter. She is full on doing everything she can the get a FF job as soon as she graduates- we will be paying for different classes and certifications. I am in the industry and have a lot of contacts. Combine that with her hard work, it should happen pretty quick.

When filling out the net price calculators they just ask if you have another dependent in college. They don’t ask how much you are paying or if they are full time/part time.

Do they just go on assumptions the first year and look for actual tuition numbers for years 2-4? Is there a benefit to having her take a few relevant classes a year?

Logistics and questions about NAR Level 1 Junior Cert

Hi!

My 16 year old son wants to get his junior level 1 certification. He has been building and flying A-F powered Estes kits., including a Super Big Bertha on an F15 engine.

He has a NAR and Tripoli membership and I joined NAR as well. This is his rodeo, but I feel like I might get my level 1 cert at some point so I can purchase future motors for him when he gets his certification. I was able to purchase one H series motor. He has a LOC Precision EZ I65 arriving today.

He has used Rocket SIM to select a motor and has studied the assembly instructions, watched youtube and he is familiar with the NAR certification process/launch rules.

Questions:
I don't see level 1 requiring a test anymore? Is there one on the NAR site?

He should show up with his form, checklist, NAR/Tripoli membership info, Rocket SIM printout, motor and igniters, Anything else?

Altitude projected is 1700 feet or so, I did buy him the Swift GPS tracker and he 3D printed a nose cone av bay. Should he focus on visually tracking the rocket or should he attempt to use the electronics.

Is it beneficial to have the rocket inspected by his local club before the launch site visit?

How about leaving it unpainted so it is easier to inspect?

Should I get my Level 1 certification after him so I can purchase motors? He turns 17 in October and will be 18 in October 2027. The hope is that he can get his level 2 before he applies to colleges.

Any other suggestions on how I can support him without stepping over the boundary of doing too much for him? He is not someone to come on here and ask questions, he will research, read and watch. He is actively participating in the local clubs large scale build projects and I am going to suggest that he ask these questions locally.

Generator to Generator Transfer Switch

We have used the Cummins OTEC ATS but they are getting hard to find parts for and the programming is proprietary from Cummins. This is for a business/gov and no I can't use bootleg software.

We are looking at moving towards a COTS ATS, especially at our locations that don't have commercial power. We have 3 locations that are generator only. We are installing 22kw 240 single phase generators, but generally the ATS we have been buying have have been 200 amp rated.

We don't want/need isolation bypass. ASCO seems to only offer a gen to gen ATS in the 7000 series which is expensive. I can't decipher the ABB Zenith or the Siemens Russelectric ATS product manuals to to identify if something is offered.

Any ideas?

Astronautical Engineering for someone ever so slightly socially awkward

My young adult is not diagnosed with anything- but does struggle with social cues and doesn’t like or when other don’t follow the rules. 3.96 GPA UW, 1530 SAT, honors and AP classes. Same sport since 3rd grade, varsity level as a sophomore. Treasurer of drone club at HS, member of state rocketry club, participating in Washington aerospace scholars (UofWash/museum of flight), Rice university “pre college” aerospace space exploration- the road to Mars. 100+ hours volunteering in the elementary school helping teachers prep their classrooms and teaching materials.

Cost is always a factor, but the right environment is more important. How do you figure out if a student is going to be able to be successful at a large stage school with large lectures for the first few years? Is a small classroom always better? Freshman retention and 5 year graduation rates are important to me as we the parents are funding this.

Schools on the list-
CU Boulder
Alabama Huntsville
CalPoly
Georgia Tech
UofWashington
Case Western
Rice
Embry Riddle
Purdue

Maybe RPI, WPI, Stevens - but he might not be a fan of the weather

This isn’t a guy who wants to be in defense or work on planes. He wants to go to outer space.

College Club Lacrosse

Is it all walk on/try out? My son is looking at the following colleges:

Rice

Georgia Tech

U of Washington

CalPoly

U of Colorado Boulder

Purdue

I believe all are club programs. He is interested in playing lacrosse in college, but based on his hyper focused academic aspirations (Astro Engineering) and chances of acceptance (Probably not an MIT/Stanford candidate based on extra curriculars)

Cost, academics first and then lacrosse. Does it make sense for him to reach out to the lacrosse clubs during campus tours?

Help figuring out what commercial machine would fit our needs [$5000-$18000]

We are looking to replace a rented de jong Duke Virtu machine that is using milk powder with something that makes better drinks, a wider variety and uses fresh milk. Office is a 911 dispatch center, so 24/7/365- M-F weekday staff is 50-60 people, we do have trainings that can have upwards of 50-80 additional people. We are currently charging $1.00-$2.00 per drink and we are selling 200-225 drinks a month. We are planning on NOT charging if we purchase our own machine and purchase consumables from Costco (I think we are paying 30% or so markup on consumables right now)

Visions Espresso seems to be the largest local commercial, but the choices are endless. They will probably see this :)

We will need to put a machine out to bid, I would want to include as long a extended warranty that I can get with bi-annual service. We would take care of daily, monthly and quarterly type of maintenance/cleaning.

Are we in the $5-10k range or $10-$20k range for a machine? I am guessing that we will do 30-40 cups a day M-F and less on weekends. Maybe a surge day or 3 a month to 50-75 cups. We are providing brewed coffee around the building in 2 different locations (90,000sqft) I am sure that a good drink from an automatic machine that is free is going to be a big hit.

If anyone knows a purchasing cooperative that these type of machines are on, that would help. I am fighting the chicken and egg thing. Can't buy direct without an RFP, Can't figure out a budget because I don't know what size we really need.
