Hi, I'm a high school senior with pretty average grades and I was pretty lazy 90% of the time but I'm trying to change that - Recently I got a 29 on my ACT and I plan to retake again. I need any tips or advice for which major to start out in undergrad with.

I really want to do Materials Engineering, my uncle works in the field with a textiles manufacturing business and I would be pretty excited and appreciate the versatility into specific industries like automotive & biomed devices. My only issue is the fact that I'm uncertain about my undergrad with my chances of getting accepted (think good but not T20 STEM schools in America) and the actual effect/value that it will have on me getting my masters and/or my PhD in MSE. I'm currently deciding between MSE itself, a more general/broad major like Mechanical or Chemical eng., or straight up Chemistry or Physics. Please note that I'm not certain on what MSE subfield I want to do specifically, I want to leave that up for my Masters/PhD to find out. Any and all tips are super appreciated!

Recently I did some last minute college research and I am now much more interested in RPI! I'm currently doing Navy JROTC at my high school, and it's one of my most active clubs and counts for multiple activities on my College App (think high leadership, community service, competition awards, teamwork, etc.) and was notably interested in RPI's NROTC Program. What made this school stand out to me is how the NROTC's Program has internship connections with places like NASA and General Dynamics! RPI is also within a good driving distance (4-5 hrs) from home and has good research opportunities and facilities, which are huge pluses for me.

I also decided to make a last minute switch from Nursing to Materials Engineering for personal reasons. Because of this, I'm late in the Engineering game in terms of high school coursework and I want to actively see how I can push myself towards RPI! I'll probably make a separate post of this to see if I'm competitive enough for the school.

I've heard how the school's new administration is turning the place for the better in many areas and the community is very STEM oriented, so I'm looking forward to that for a change of pace (and to hopefully have more friends in STEM lol).

I wanted to get more of your inputs as to why you enjoy RPI and what I can look forward to, as this school is aligning with most of my interests so far and I see no reason not to consider it one of my top choices. I'll be touring the campus next month, so please let me know what you guys think! Any inputs from any ROTC students is definitely appreciated!

Hi, recently I was watching TheXPGamers in his Age of the Empire play through and I was enjoying his consistent use of smaller ships and fighters when playing as the rebellion. The only games I've ever finished were Republic At War & The Base EAW Game, that have a similar type of play style, but are nonetheless pretty old.

I find that I might enjoy more micromanaging and a game system where I can make better use of smaller ships and fighters, and have my capitals/overall larger ships limited down to just a handful for the majority of my game play. Note that while I enjoyed mods that made use of larger SSDs like TR (Project Proteus was an amazing touch as well when I wanted to larp a warlord I remotely liked or play as the Hutts (Hutts are the best faction hands down)), I'm just ready for a different way of managing my units. Think similarly to other real-time strategy games like Gates of Hell: Ostfront, Armored Brigade, the Combat Mission series.

Hi, I am a high school junior, and I am about to finish my current school year. Looking at both freshman and sophomore years in terms of my mental health and grades, junior year was the best year so far. If my final exams go well, I'll finish the year off with a 3.5 GPA.

For some background, I did not have an enjoyable high school experience for the most part. I have gone through multiple seemingly unending periods of increasing loneliness, low self-esteem, and social anxiety. I felt incredibly behind because this behavior affected my willingness to keep my grades up (barely kept a 3.0/3.1), and I remained stuck in Ged-Ed courses while my friends improved their academic prospects (which greatly reduced my self-esteem & academic motivation).

At the end of the freshman year, my school's guidance & counseling office placed me under Mental Health Observation & Checkup, AKA "MHOCs". I would receive four half-hour sessions with my guidance counselor for casual check-ins. This period of placement is not written on my official transcript. I was cut off from the Boys Volleyball & Swimming tryouts at my school; however, I think this would've been better for my mental health in the short run. This period lasted until the start of my junior year, when I was taken off the list.

TL;DR: A couple weeks ago, I finished my year with mostly A's and B+'s, with one C+ (Algebra 2 & Trigonometry). During my junior year, I decided I would like to major in Human Biology at uni, attend Dental School, and then specialize. I knew I could not take any AP courses during my junior year because I was still under MHOC. I emailed my counselor, I asked if I could potentially take AP Lit, and then stick with my other Gen-Ed classes include my three-hour in-school internship co-op position. She told me no and even refused to give me English Honors because she felt I would not do well in that class due to my previous MHOC designation. I still do struggle with my mental health, but I was able to manage it much better this year and I became a much more productive student.

When it comes to my college application, in terms of my academics, should I highlight in any "other" section that my counselor did not allow me to take APs, even though I really wanted to? Does that damage my application, or is it a reasonable excuse?

Hi I'm currently a high school junior and my main school is Rutgers since I'm in-state and want to save money bc I plan to attend dental school post undergrad. Recently I saw a post about a student at Rutgers taking Precalc as a class, and I was curious as to what math level course I should take during my senior year.

Unfortunately I've been struggling with my mental health and I'm trying not to go into an existential crisis before junior year ends (hopefully I can end this year with a 3.5) but it has certainly affected my overall grades. My counselor recommended that I take Probs & Stats as an alternative to Precalc, since I'd have to ask our school's math supervisor for permission to take Precalc. I can also do both as a third alternative if I want to challenge myself.

My major would most likely be Public Health @ Bloustein or Biochemistry/Microbiology @ SEBS, so taking Precalc is something I'm still invested in doing since I want to select STEM majors. What should I do?
