Transfer credits from abroad?

Does anyone have experience with transferring credits from affiliated schools abroad? I’ve been looking at a couple different European universities to study abroad at but I’m having trouble finding 1:1 content equivalents to RPI courses I need credit for. Some schools also have classes with the same content as at RPI courses but less than the 15 required contact hours per credit. How lenient is the registrars office with transfer credit from affiliated universities that isn’t an exact match?

Gluten-Free Dining?

Anyone intimately familiar with GF dining at RPI? How easy is it for a student to live on campus and eat regularly while avoiding gluten?

TPD's 60-day Flock data is back and the Public Safety Committee meets this Thursday

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DcM6ahquBPf/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==
(see instagram post for more information)

Troy Police Department’s Flock Audit Logs and 60-day data are finally public, and here are a few things we’re seeing:

🚩25,367,366 license plate scans in 159 days — that’s almost 5 million scans a month.

🚩97% of “Hot List” hits were for suspended or revoked plates

🚩 The 60-day data revealed that most incidents reported to TPD (64%) were searched before 48 hours, supporting the deletion standard set by Local Law #3.

🚩Our Shared Network Agreement states 139 partners, which include Home Depot (101 stores) and Lowe’s (99 stores). Why?!?!?

Anything to add? Comment or come to the Public Hearing this Thursday, August 20, 5:45 PM.

Here's the Zoom link if you can't attend in person.

Annual Help .CIO/FIXX Help You Thread - 2026 Edition

It's move in time! Also known as the time of year where everyone gets overwhelmed all at once.

TL;DR: Call x7777 for phone, network, laptop, login issues, software problems and x2000 for HVAC, plumbing, leaks, and other building problems. Problem solvers do not watch reddit for problem reports especially when their queues are full of issues submitted through the standard channels.

In an effort to avoid a few dozen network questions/complaints threads, here's a summary of common network issues.

0.) Don't be afraid to call, email, or visit the Help Desk. It is hard to fix problems no one knows about. x7777 or https://ITSSC.rpi.edu will reach them if you can't visit in person. If its a facilities problem (power, plumbing, leaks, but not Ethernet, phone, or CATV), x2000 or https://info.rpi.edu/facilities-management/fixx

0-a.) You may need to follow up. In the start of semester madness, things can get overlooked by accident. Keep the ticket # from the initial contact. You can actually log in to .CIO's and FIXX's systems and check your status.

0-b.) Your RPI email will be used for all official email communication. Ignore its existence at your own risk.

1.) Wireless is shared bandwidth among all clients on an access point. Although the access points should be able to handle the traffic, they may have issues with the occasional spike. Try a wired connection if experiencing overall slow speeds to see if that resolves the problem. Make a note of the time, your physical location, the physical/MAC address of your wireless adapter, and let the helpdesk know. They can be reached at x7777 or https://itssc.rpi.edu The network techs can't investigate problems they don't know about.

2.) Wireless can have faster raw speed than wired, but because of its shared medium, its latency can vary. If a fixed latency is important, try a wired connection or convince your neighbors to use a wired connection. The access point may be capable of 600 Mbits, but assume a minimum of 2 Wifi clients per student.

3.) Running your own access point is prohibited. Relevant Policy. Due to the shared nature of wireless spectrum, the more radio sources competing for the same channel, the worse the signal is for everyone. RF coordination is a challenge even with relatively clear spectrum.

4.) It is possible to put gaming consoles and such on the WiFi. There's a special network that you have to register the device for. It will only work on the residential side of campus and not in the academic buildings. Info. If this doesn't work, submit a request for a manual override here: Netreg

5.) 3rd party DNS servers are prohibited. Traffic to external DNS providers is blocked. This includes the root servers. If you can't access anything, triple check you're set to obtain your name server information automatically. Policy

6.) You can run servers on campus and receive a static IP for the wired network in your room. Server and IP info

7.) No matter how nicely you ask, you won't get a bypass code for duo. That being said, you can get help if your authentication device breaks

8.) When requesting software, it takes some time for all the ACLs to update (typically you get an email with instructions once they are set). If you get denied, wait an hour, reboot (to clear Window's ACL cache) and try again. If that fails, put in a trouble ticket.

8-a.) There is a lot of info out there for running Windows software via bootcamp on Mac. That info only applies to Apple's Intel era (2006 - 2020). Current Macs use an ARM derived CPU. It is possible to run virtual Windows for ARM using commercial solutions you can buy, and then use Windows for ARM's built in Intel emulation to run your required PC software, but performance and compatiblity may vary greatly.

9.) .CIO generally operates on a "Don't make me pay attention to what you're doing" basis and are generally willing to work with you on legitimate needs.

I think this covers the common start of academic year questions/complaints.

TMC Wednesday

Thanks to everybody for your love and support of Michael. He's progressing slowly with some feeling and a little controllable movement in his fingers, arms, and feet. His spirits are great, thanks to all of you. I passed along your messages and he's so grateful for all you've done for him.

TMC will be back to the corner Wednesday. It's going to be a beautiful day to pickup some Pad Thai and Dumplings. We will be at our corner of 15th&Sage (RPI Student Union) from 11-2:00.

We'll be at the Saturday Troy Waterfront Farmers Market!

Downloading course schedule from student portal into school outlook calendar or google calendar

Does anywhere on the SIS/registration portal generate an ICS file so that the course schedule can be uploaded into the school outlook calendar (or a personal google calendar), or does the class schedule have to be entered manually into a calendar app? I can't find a tab that does this.

Taking dining hall food

Is there like anything against just bringing like a Tupperware into the commons dining hall and putting some extra food in there for my dorm?

Package Delivery

Does anyone know the answer to this? If I am no longer living on campus but still a full time registered student, can I ship my packages to be picked up from the union or do they check if you are living on campus? Thanks!

Questions about dining

I’m an incoming freshman and had a few questions about dining at RPI. I’m trying to get a better idea of what the different dining options are and how everything works before the semester starts.

Do Commons and Sage generally serve the same food, or are the menus pretty different? Also, how does Simply To Go at Sage work? Where exactly is it when you walk into Sage? Is it a separate room/area, and do you swipe at the normal entrance and then go there, or is there a separate place to swipe specifically for Simply To Go?

Also, how do the dining hall takeout containers work? Where do you get them and where do you return them?

Are there any other dining options or things about the meal plan that are good to know as a freshman?

Is 20 credits a lot?

I made my schedule a while ago, but everyone I show says its a lot and I'll be really overwhelmed. I need all the classes I'm taking and I don't really want to drop any cause I'll just have to take it eventually, but will it really be that bad? Just for reference, I plan on doing a double major in Aerospace Engineering and Physics and the classes I'm taking are: Physics 1, Calc 1, Intro to Modern Physics, Essence of Engineering Mechanics, and Media and Society (for my HASS inquiry course). I figured that doing 5 classes a semester would be standard for a double major but a lot of people are telling me that it's too much and now I'm worried I'll do bad in my classes.

Update: After reading the replies, I think I probably will drop a class just so I dont overwhelm myself with too much in my first semester. Im going to talk to my advisor about this, but I think I'll drop Essence of Engineering Mechanics now and take it in the spring. Can anyone who has taken this class before confirm if thats a good idea? I wanted to get the HASS Inquiry course out of the way, but if I have to I'll drop that and take it in the spring instead if its best to take essence of engineering mechanics in the fall.

Question about textbooks as a freshman?

Some of my textbooks on the RPI bookstore, like for Calc (IA ACH Online 1 Term Calculus by Macmillan) and Physics 1 (Mastering Physics with Pearson by Young), say they're "part of a program where course materials are included in a course charge or tuition," whereas for CompSci 1 (Practical Programming by Gries) just has me buy it through the bookstore. Are the former books going to be given out or something (I'm assuming they are, but I just want to be sure), or should I purchase them from amazon or something?

Farmers Market Attractions - What are you favorites?

The Troy farmers market is one of the best I have ever been to. I love the stone oven pizzas and the tamales. What are some of your favorites?

Thunder Mountain Curry

Friday night Michael had a serious fall in his house. He is in the hospital now with surgery scheduled Tuesday. He will be sidelined from TMC for awhile. I will continue operating TMC with help as best as I can. It's going to be difficult doing this without him. Michael has been the heart of Thunder Mountain Curry and my rock and right hand for 18 years.

Please keep him in your thoughts Tuesday and the days after as he recovers.

I am taking this a day at a time. I always said I couldn't do this without him by my side, I am going to try my best.

We all have some beautiful days this week. I am going try going out to our corner tomorrow, Tuesday the 11th and I hope to be at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market Saturday. I will confirm it this evening and post a menu. I won't know about Saturday until later in the week.

Please be patient with me as I adjust and retool TMC to make it doable without Michael while he recovers.

Your love, support , and patience mean everything to Michael and I now more than ever.

Hey all! I recently built a a workout tracking app called Fortis: Workout Log & Tracker and am looking for Cincinnati students to try it out and give me honest feedback. It's kind of like Strava but for the gym. You can log workouts, track progress over time, build custom exercises and templates, and share progress with friends on the app.

Still early but I think it's genuinely useful if you're trying to stay consistent.

Free on iOS and Android. Would love any feedback, good or bad, if you give it a shot.
