Gazette Spoilers

With the rising number of members and discussions on this sub, we need to make sure we make it a place that everyone can enjoy no matter how far into their Emma journey they are.

Already, we have created specific discussion groups for each book so you can join in the fun regardless of how far you are in the series. But, we also need to be careful what things you are including outside the series.

Not everyone has subscribed to the Gazette and even those that have, might not have read all of them. So, if you refer to things outside the series, try to either use the spoiler flair, gazette flair, or the spoiler setting within your post as well.

All of this is to ensure everyone can continue to enjoy the series at whatever obsession level they happen to be at. ;-)

Thanks!

Writing Group(s)?

Hey!

I live in the Orenco area and am wondering if there are any writing groups I can connect with. Ideally I'd like to find people who are actively trying to get published since that is the road that I am on. I'd love fellow writers who can offer constructive feedback and hold each other accountable etc. Maybe I need to spread the net wider and look in Portland but I thought I would check here first. Shop local? 😜 Thanks!

Retro Menu Support?

With a new wave of people wanting to own physical media as well as retro movie watching experiences are on the rise, do you think Plex will ever support interactive menus? Or at least try to make DVD extras more accessible? Yes, I know you can add it to a sub-menu beneath the movie but, it's not as exciting as old physical media made bonus features. :) Just a thought.

From Orem, Utah, to readers around the world: The unlikely rise of ‘Emma M. Lion’

Newspaper article link.

Eliza Anderson, Deseret News

Without a traditional publishing deal or marketing campaign, Beth Brower remained confident her “Emma M. Lion” book series would reach the right audience.

The first two volumes in “The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion” made their modest debut in November 2019. Just months before the release, Brower personally announced the books on Instagram, where the post drew 65 likes and just over a dozen comments.

Now, after seven years and eight volumes, Brower is regularly recognized in Orem, Utah, where she lives, she recently told The New York Times in one of her first major interviews. After a recent interaction while out with her husband, Brower gave him a lighthearted apology.

“I’m afraid,” she recalled in the interview with the Times, “we’re going to spend the rest of our lives talking about Emma.”

Who is Beth Brower?

While attending Utah Valley University — where Brower earned a degree in literary studies — she discovered a knack for gardening that led to a career as head gardener at Rivendell, a seven-acre “Lord of the Rings”-inspired estate in Park City, Utah, with more than 1,200 native trees.

After seven years at Rivendell, a chronic illness required her to leave.

“We have to be brave enough to encounter the dark things,” she told the Times. “Having hope or faith in life requires grit. It requires being honest about the shadows one encounters.”

Brower grew up in Orem as the fifth of 11 siblings. A lifelong reader, she recalls often sneaking out of bed as a child to pull her favorite books from the closet. “My desire to create stories grew as I was learning to read them,” she said.

After facing rejection through the traditional publishing path, Brower decided to create her own route, founding Rhysdon Press in 2016. She published her first novel the same year.

She relied on her family’s talents while building her independent publishing company. Her sister edits her work, while her brother-in-law designs the book covers.

“Much like the Brontë sisters had each other, and Virginia Woolf had her sister, I have a lot of talented siblings,” she told the Times.

With support from her family, Brower has self-published 13 novels since launching her writing career in 2016 — “The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Ruby Prince,” “The Wanderer’s Mark,” “The Q,” “The Beast of Ten” and eight volumes in the “Emma M. Lion” series.

Writing ‘Emma M. Lion’

The “Emma M. Lion” series represented a genre shift from her previous novels, and was meant to provide a detour from “emotionally heavier work,” per the Times.

The detour became a breakout. The first volume has received more than 110,000 reviews on Goodreads — a major jump from the 3,100 reviews on her first novel.

It launched the series in front of traditional publishers, leading to deals with Bloomsbury Publishing in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and over a dozen other countries, as well as translation rights sold in at least 17 countries — including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese.

Audiobook versions of the series have also been released.

Now, she has focused much of her attention on the series, publishing eight volumes and working toward a ninth. Brower also publishes a subscription-based Substack newsletter, featuring extra scenes, short stories and letters based on the secondary characters in “Emma M. Lion.”

Readers have been drawn to the series’ charming, epistolary style. Set in 1883 in the fictional neighborhood of St. Crispian’s in London — where Brower had only been once before beginning the series — the novels follow Emma, a witty 20-year-old, as she navigates her quirky neighborhood, eccentric family members and tries to reclaim her family home.

“As a publisher, I like complex female characters,” said Alexis Kirschbaum at Bloomsbury.

Brower writes the series with a similar format to a television series. There will be four seasons of “Emma,” each season including five to six volumes, with each volume comprising two months. Her plan is for 25 books, spanning the years 1883 through 1887.

She already knows how it ends.

“I do know everything that happens. With all the characters. I’ve not told ANYONE,” she wrote on her personal website. “When readers tell me their thoughts, opinions, or predictions, I smile and try not to give anything away. When the entire series is finished and you reread the volumes, I hope you enjoy the easter eggs.”

The Bookshelf ~ July 2026 lectori salutem

DEAR READER,

Well, my friends, it has been quite a week—a whirlwind of good things.

TODAY, the first two volumes of The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion were released in the UK by Bloomsbury.

https://preview.redd.it/7y61zp0e9fgh1.png?width=970&format=png&auto=webp&s=179065dce0b5ef7816a47db9473e1cdb8da2ea6a

I spent the morning popping into bookshops and signing books for readers to find. You can secure one of these volumes here:

>

If you are in the U.S., you can order them from Blackwells with free shipping! (Q: Is it too much to have two or three sets of Emma M. Lion in one’s library? A: No, no it is not.)

LEST WE FORGET, it is July. Somewhere in St. Crispian’s a play was had. As you all know, EML Vol. 9 begins with the first of July, 1884, and so I have been in ancient Rome with a certain play.

There is a YouTube video I wanted to share with you, of Damian Lewis performing the speech made by Marc Antony. I think he did a beautiful job.

SOMETHING OF INTEREST

Before this afternoon, I had neither been to Islington, nor researched anything about the neighborhood online. Sometimes I wonder what in the world I have really tapped into writing these books because when I looked across Upper Street there was a pub. The Hare & Hounds. I could almost see Islington, Duke Of, smirking in my general direction.

The Devereuxs and their Rabbit Room… Sigh.

https://preview.redd.it/6awh101n9fgh1.png?width=1100&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f82d73c42b64cb08799f85c363bf249a1c9f035

THE LAST FEW weeks I’ve been enjoying this song.
Just the right feel for high summer.

I listened to it when I went to Paris last week to visit my lovely French publishers at Flammarion. We had a great time catching up and it was a treat to find the French editions in the wild. They are very beautiful. I weep. They also mentioned that the American readers have been so supportive online. That makes me happy. Emma readers are kind and encouraging. Let’s remain that kind of community.

https://preview.redd.it/0lzb0uqq9fgh1.png?width=1100&format=png&auto=webp&s=0de3277f7ca12ebfca94e16dc4d3972697e36e71

AND KNOW THAT EML Vol. 9 is coming along well. As the saying goes, my head is in the game.

With love to you all,
Beth

NYT Article

Article in the New York Times

By Courtney Runn

July 29, 2026

On Nov. 5, 2019, the first two volumes of “The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion” quietly entered the world.

The books were a departure from Beth Brower’s typical fantasy novels, instead following the day-to-day adventures and musings of a witty, literary-minded orphan on the cusp of adulthood in a fictional London neighborhood in 1883.

Brower had visited London only once, but she could clearly see Emma’s world in her head — quirky neighbors, whimsical traditions, fantastical balls, cozy tea shops and unexplainable happenings of the ghostly variety. Think “Gilmore Girls,” in Victorian England.

Posting an announcement on Instagram to a smattering of congratulatory comments was the extent of Brower’s marketing, but she trusted the right readers would find the books.

Seven years and six volumes later, the fans have indeed found Emma, and they are obsessed.

“The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion" was meant to be a lighthearted diversion as Brower made progress on emotionally heavier work; instead, it’s propelled her to self-publishing fame and, recently, more traditional deals with Bloomsbury Publishing in Britain and 17 other international publishers. (She hasn’t signed with an American publisher, and in fact turned down a promising offer, though describes herself as still open.)

The first volume has garnered more than 100,000 reviews on Goodreads. Facebook groups and bookfluencers churn out new fan theories daily (if not hourly).

And Brower is now regularly recognized in Orem, Utah, where she lives. On a recent outing, she turned to her husband with an amused apology after one such encounter.

“I’m afraid,” she recalled in a Zoom conversation, “we’re going to spend the rest of our lives talking about Emma.”

Orem is where Brower, 41, also grew up, the fifth of 11 siblings. Surrounded by art, music, sports and books in a creatively inclined family, she nurtured a rich inner life and the ability to write in any environment.

It was always a matter of when, not if, she would publish her first novel. She romanticized the traditional publishing path, but rejection letters forced her to examine the drive behind her dream: to be in every bookstore or to find readers who connected with her work? She chose the readers, founding Rhysdon Press in 2016.

She turned to her entrepreneurial family, hiring her sister to edit and her brother-in-law to design book covers. The learning curve was steep but rewarding; she could control every element of the work, including the typeset that she meticulously laid out with InDesign.

“Much like the Brontë sisters had each other, and Virginia Woolf had her sister, I have a lot of talented siblings,” she said.

Brower has self-published 13 novels since 2016. She attempts to catalog her vivid imagination in a “glorious mess of notes and notebooks,” storing snippets of plots until they emerge in her work years later.

The word-of-mouth success of the Emma Lion books is largely thanks to the instantly likable titular heroine. Emma might share the sunny wonder of Anne Shirley, but her wit and modernity are pure Elizabeth Bennet.

“I admit to running counter to most social graces,” Emma explains in the second volume. “I have been accused of throwing a teapot before, as you will no doubt hear before too long.”

Brower plots the books like a long-running television show; each volume spans two months in Emma’s life and each calendar year represents a “season.” Book 9 is slated this year, with fans stalking every digital move for hints of when it might drop.

The books are the first series, and the first self-published works, that Alexis Kirschbaum, the head of Bloomsbury Trade, has acquired. “As a publisher, I like complex female characters,” she said, and the “true originality of imagination” and spot-on capture of the “London spirit” made it an easy gamble, she added.

Lady Smith, co-owner of the independent bookstore Snail on the Wall, in Huntsville, Ala., first stocked the series in January after a customer’s request. Now, she restocks weekly and says they’ve sold almost 100 copies of the first volume — making it one of their best sellers.

Set in an invented corner of London called St. Crispian’s, the books might be wrapped in an unassuming package of Anglophile charm, but readers appreciate that Brower isn’t afraid to explore the darker edges of her characters.

In Book 5, Young Hawkes, an unorthodox vicar more likely to quote poetry than Scripture from the pulpit, offers a challenge to Emma as she’s staring down grief on the brink of a new year: “It takes a great deal to trust the future after one is acquainted with loss.”

This sentiment was a welcome balm to Torri Foster, a 27-year-old reader in Chandler, Ind., who turned to the Emma Lion books the day after a miscarriage.

A friend had begged her to read them the previous year, even offering up her own Kindle. Foster, a classics lover who majored in English, knew she could trust Brower when she spotted a Milton reference in the first book.

When she lost her daughter Ophelia, the world of the series was a safe refuge where she felt deeply understood. “Emma gave me a friend I didn’t have to talk back to,” Foster said. “It’s so much more than just a book.”

Brower deeply appreciates the ardor of her fans, but she’s constructed strict boundaries around St. Crispian’s and its secrets — she is not lurking on Reddit threads for plot suggestions. She confirms the series will contain 25 books in total, chronicling Emma’s life through 1887.

Lucas Page lives in McDonough, Ga., and heard about the books from friends at church. “I’m a 35-year-old man, married, father of two, and I relate,” he said. He recommended them to his 86-year-old grandmother, who read the entire series in three weeks and jokes that she hopes she’ll live long enough to see it to completion.

Page and his grandmother aren’t an anomaly. The series looks to have broad appeal: It has enough literary merit to please self-proclaimed book snobs; it resists explicit scenes driving other BookTok sensations while still giving romance fans fodder for endgame predictions; and it features nuanced spiritual musings yet doesn’t alienate nonreligious readers or veer into saccharine territory.

(For fans who speculate that Emma’s misadventures are inaccurately modern, Brower has a simple rebuttal: “There’s quite a lot of interesting behavior happening in England in the 1800s.”)

While Brower insists that Emma is not autobiographical, the balance of realism and optimism that attracts readers to the character is rooted in the author’s own disposition.

In college, Brower discovered a talent for gardening. She enjoyed her newfound hobby so much that she became a professional, spending seven years as the head gardener at Rivendell, a “Lord of the Rings”-inspired estate outside of Park City, Utah, until chronic illness forced her to leave.

“Most of my days are hard, they’re not bad,” she said. “We have to be brave enough to encounter the dark things.”

Now in better health, Brower enjoys a more consistent writing schedule and the capacity to travel to London. The Bloomsbury editions come out in Britain on Thursday; with them has come her first traditional book launch. (She said she’s delighted by the British book covers, designed by David Mann, which look like “1940s editions of a classic 1800s novel.”)

She’s been meeting and sharing meals with her British and French publishers. In Paris, she stole away to Fnac to purchase her own books — “a moment of triumph for me and my characters,” she said by telephone, “and I wanted to share it with them.”

She’s not sure where she’ll be in London for the publication on Thursday. “I’ll let instinct and serendipity guide me,” she added. “If you want magic, you can’t force it too much.”

Consultation? Is that a thing?

I am not looking for someone to completely design my book cover. 1) I can't afford that right now 2) I have a modicum of talent with Procreate and would love to design my own cover.

All that being said, I also know I don't have the training for color theory, balance, etc. So, I would love it if there was someone with experience that could give me advice on how to improve my ideas. I don't mind paying a small consulting fee if someone has the experience. But free advice is also very welcome as well. 😄

Thank you!

PS- I would post a sample on here but the last time I did, I got rejected by mods for some reason.

Emma Lion Intellectual Property (IP) Policy

With the rising popularity of the books, there have been a lot of new shops and products emerging, especially in places like Etsy. While it's so fun to see people's creativity and response to the series, it's worth taking a minute to read the official policy so as to not cross any moral or legal boundaries. Beth doesn't seem the type to be particularly litigious, but the companies around her might start getting more protective with the rising popularity.

TLDR: Let's look out for each other while having fun. ❤️

Intellectual Property Policy

Beth Brower and Rhysdon Press, LLC (hereinafter “Rhysdon Press”) retain all copyrights in their creative works (“Rhysdon Press Works”). This means that, except as described below, copies, derivative works, distributions, and public displays are not allowed. A “derivative work” is a work based upon one or more of the Rhysdon Press Works. Any visual fan art (e.g., images, digital, 3D, sculpture, etc.) allowed hereunder is limited to original works depicting characters, scenes, geographies, and/or other elements from Rhysdon Press Works, and must not include or incorporate a whole, partial, or substantial copy of any visual art from any Rhysdon Press Works.

NON-COMMERCIAL USE

You can make visual fan art (graphics, images, paintings, sculptures) and written fan fiction based on Beth Brower’s works (e.g., the Emma M. Lion books) only for non-commercial (no direct or indirect commercial benefit to you or anyone else) use.

For example, you may post your fan art to your social media sites, etc. but you may not make money from them directly or indirectly. An Instagram page that acts as a storefront is considered commercial, and you must have a licensing agreement.

No images, films, trailers, shorts or A.I. generated video, etc., of any kind is ever allowed. Any exceptions require a written license agreement with Rhysdon Press, LLC.

You may not feed any of Beth Brower’s written works, whole or in part, into any kind of AI system or module.

Music inspired by Beth’s work is allowed for non-commercial use as long as it does not incorporate phrases, sentences, etc., from Beth’s works. Any music with her work in the title or lyrics is not allowed.

COMMERCIAL USE

Commercial use includes any direct or indirect financial benefit. We love our fans and their enthusiasm, especially for all things Emma M. Lion. That said, in order to not compromise the integrity of Beth’s work, her copyrights and trademarks, if you wish to sell merchandise based on or that incorporates any of Beth Brower’s works (e.g., the Emma M. Lion books), you must acquire a licensing agreement beforehand from Rhysdon Press, LLC.

Written fan art, fan fiction, comics, etc. are not allowed for commercial use.

No images, films, trailers, shorts, or A.I. generated video etc., of any length are allowed for commercial use.

You may not feed any of Beth Brower’s written works, whole or in part, into any kind of AI system or module.

Any commercial event/s based on Beth’s Intellectual Property require a contract/licensing agreement (meaning: any event where tickets, and/or merchandise are or will be sold).

You may not create and sell maps based on Beth Brower’s IP.

You may not use A.I. to create and sell products, etc.

Crowd-funding to produce or distribute fan art or fan fiction, etc., is not allowed.

If you are selling merchandise that is adjacent to Beth’s work, you can reference a Beth Brower book title or character etc., in the description of the item but not in the title or header for the item. For example, a t-shirt titled “Alchemy t-shirt,” showing the word “Alchemy,” is fine and may include in the item description, “inspired by [book name] by Beth Brower.  A t-shirt with “Lapis Lazuli House” on it would require a licensing agreement with Rhysdon Press, after which you could use that IP in your header.

You may not give away fan art for promotional purposes. You may produce and distribute to close friends and family a small number of your fan art items that are otherwise allowable hereunder.

Please be aware that Rhysdon Press, LLC, and Beth Brower, are not responsible for any investment of time, money etc., invested into products you hope to sell but for which you do not yet have a licensing agreement.

If the creation of anything related to Rhysdon Press, LLC, and/or Beth Brower’s Intellectual Property is not covered or answered in this document, or you are unsure regarding this policy, please assume it is not allowed, unless you receive written permission in the form of a contract. Any failure to enforce any of these terms will not operate as a waiver of the right to do so on another occasion.

This policy will be updated as needed, so please check back before engaging in any venture, commercial or non-commercial, having to do with the Intellectual Property of Rhysdon Press, LLC, or Beth Brower.

For licensing enquiries or questions regarding such, please send an email to licensing@rhysdonpress.com.

Thank you.

Do all collections have to be displayed?

I want to know if it's possible to decide which collections are displayed as a collection and individually. For example: I like having all my 007 movies stay inside a collection but, I would like to have a Disney Collection AND each of the titles to show up individually. I know I can create playlists but I don't like how they look aesthetically compared to collections. Thoughts?

The answer is probably no, but I know there are a lot of Plex experts out there that know how to find loopholes. :)
