How do you investigate commission discrepancies?
I have an engineering background and extensive experience working with incentive compensation systems, and I'm currently exploring an idea to improve how companies manage and understand sales compensation.
Before taking the idea further, I'd like to understand how companies actually deal with commission questions and discrepancies today.
I'm particularly interested in situations where someone asks:
- "Why was I paid this amount?"
- "Why didn't this transaction generate commission?"
- "Why was this commission clawed back?"
- "What happened to this transaction?"
- "What's this rep's current commission balance?"
- "Why is my quota attainment different from what I expected?"
- "Which transactions are included in this payout?"
For companies with more complex compensation plans, what does the investigation process actually look like?
Do you typically:
- Dig through spreadsheets?
- Export data from HubSpot?
- Check CRM records and commission calculations separately?
- Ask someone in Sales Ops or Finance?
- Use a dedicated commission management platform?
- Something else?
And perhaps the most important question:
How long does it usually take to get a clear answer when a rep disputes a commission?
I'm not looking to promote a product here. I'm trying to understand where the biggest operational pain points actually are and whether there is an opportunity to improve this process.
I'd especially appreciate hearing from Sales Ops, RevOps, Finance, or anyone responsible for managing sales compensation.
