mauimagazine.netMaka Weliweli (or Kaʻa kau Maka Weliweli) ~ The highly respected ancient prophetess (kaula) from the island of Molokaʻi.
Makaweliweli, a prominent ancient prophetess from Molokaʻi, foresaw a time when the Hawaiian people would nearly disappear because they forgot how to live in peace and harmony.
She envisioned gigantic "anthills" built on the beaches, where people would live and run around aimlessly, having lost their cultural direction.
- Preservation of Knowledge: In Hawaiian, Maka Weliweli translates to "terrifying eyes" or "fearful eyes".
She is remembered for her fierce protection of ancient teachings, keeping the sacred lore and history of Molokaʻi alive.
Lineage and Mentorship: She was the teacher and adoptive (hanai) mother of Kailiʻone Kameʻekua (born in 1816), who lived to be 115 and became one of the primary voices for the stories of ancient Molokaʻi.
Teaching Methods: Rather than relying on written records, Maka Weliweli passed down knowledge through oral histories, parables, and moʻolelo (traditional storytelling) that connected the people deeply to the land and elements.
