Motion-Activated Cameras Caught Something at an 950-Year-Old Castle. The Security Guard's Dog Refused to Enter.

English Heritage released CCTV footage this October from Chester Castle in Cheshire that has people genuinely unsettled.

At 2:47 AM, motion-detecting security cameras triggered an alert. Staff reviewed the footage and found a pale, hooded figure standing directly in front of the main gates—exactly where the medieval gatehouse used to stand centuries ago. Dark clothing, indistinct white face, unmistakably humanoid.

A security guard was dispatched to investigate. The castle is locked. Perimeter fences intact. Large medieval spikes line the battlements. There's nowhere for someone to just vanish.

When the guard arrived, the area was completely empty. No sign of anyone. But here's where it gets worse: his dog, a normally fearless animal trained for security work, refused to enter the compound. Refused. The guard described feeling "a hundred eyes" watching him while he searched.

Colleagues in the control room were watching him on the monitors the whole time. They could still see what appeared to be an intruder on camera. But there was nobody there.

A full search of the secured premises turned up nothing. No intruder. No explanation for how someone could have been on camera and then vanished without leaving the locked grounds.

English Heritage has the footage. They released the still image during their Halloween announcements. No one has explained what it is.

The guard who responded? He's never given another statement about what he felt that night.

The Goddard Squadron Ghost (1919) A 1919 RAF squadron photograph features a clear extra face identified by crew members as Freddie Jackson, an air mechanic who died in an accident two days before the picture was taken and whose film negative showed no evidence of tampering.
