Addon: Frams and Nodes | construct your Frames faster and paramertric

Dear FreeCAD community,

about a year and a halve ago i strated looking into creating frames with FreeCAD. There are many great addons for that, how ever while using them the modeling of "nodes" places where multiple "frame members" end was still a tideous task.

So I thought up a way to laverage the subshape binder, Attachment, Assemblys, ... to help me streamline my workflow.

I put the result of that work into an addon:

FramesAndNodes Addon

Which has all the tools needed to show a Prof of concept of my envisioned workflow. Now I need your help in identifying issues early and to polish the addon before I am going to add it to the addon manger.

Is here someone who works with control cabinets?

What do you do ?

How would you like to improve your workflow ?

Do you work with a library?

How to set up freecad in a commercial context?

Hello,

So what do I need to set up FreeCAD in a company setting?

I thought of a few things:

  1. Company Techdraw pages and text field templates

  2. PDM

  3. Central control over addons

Is there something that I missed?

How would you measure the productivity of a CAD software?

How to quantify the productivity of a CAD software

Hello people on the internet,

How would the productivity of a CAD software be quantified.

Now the CAD workflows can be split into different categories.

  1. Solid modeling

  2. Surface modelling

  3. Assembly

  4. Creation of Drawing and dimentioning

  5. Creation of 2D sketches

  6. Creation of 3D sketches

  7. Model Analysis

7.1 Design for manufacturing Analysis

7.2 stress Analysis

7.3 mototion Analysis simulation

Some of these are more general some are kind of specialized.

How would you takel this problem of measuring the productivity, in a way that is not userer dependent ?

System simulation in FreeCAD

Hello dear FreeCAD community,

Would you like the capability to simulate hydraulic / pneumatic/ electro pneumatic systems.

Well I found hopsan an Opensource fluid simulation software, it can create plans and fluid simulations. Now the vision is to create an addon that connects FreeCAD assembly with a hydraulic plan. Then create a mototion simulation:

  1. Animation: just moves cylinders around

  2. Simulation: takes forces, masses, pressure into account

This project would involve creating:

  1. Generic interface for fluid simulations

  2. Easy way to connect an hydraulic components in FreeCAD to their counter part in hopsan(fluid simulation software)

  3. Creation of hydraulic component library

3.1 piston, cylinders, valves, measurement devices

4 visual helpers for easy work

Which would result in a specialized hydraulic workbench or integration into the assembly workbench.

Of course there are many challenges ahead of us, first I need to find a software devolper who is interested. The second problem is defing and writing proper requirements, creation of road map.

What do i bring to the table? FreeCAD modelling, basic qt skills, basic python and a vision

What about you?

The Two questions

  1. Why would I use FreeCAD?

  2. Why would I not use FreeCAD?

Besides Priece these two questions are mainly regarding features/capabilities and User experience.

If you use some other software like Onshape or Soildworks or Fusion then tell us how FreeCAD overcomplicates your workflow for the same result. Or how FreeCAD makes the workflow easier then other software.

Actually there is a third question, what would you change or add to FreeCAD that the First question is easy to answer and the second one is hard to answer.
