Redcat 32

This little truck doing its thing… the dismount wasn’t great, but that’s on me.

Redcat Ascent 32

So, I put this truck together from parts only. It’s not the RTR version.

The MoFo NanoBAM motor was just too much for the differential. The stock axles I ordered had plastic gears in them. When I swapped covers, I noticed this and had my doubts about those gears.

One run in, and the front tires stopped pulling. I knew exactly what happened.

On the upside, I called Redcat Racing. They answered the phone after two rings. The gentleman immediately shipped another axle that day. Customer Service is on point!

However, I asked about metal gears for the truck. He suggested checking Injora. They don’t make them.

After some googling, I found these aluminum axles on Amazon. LRFHL makes them. I’ve never heard of them. I figured I’d give them a shot. They have steel gears in the differentials, which is what this truck really needs.

I did have to widen the lower rear link mounts slightly. I also had to add a shim just behind the wheel nuts to make the wheels fit tight. The axles don’t thread as far as the stock wheel stems. Either way, not a bad fit at all!

So far, I’m pretty stoked about these axles. The added low weight really did change how the truck crawls, compared to the lighter stock axles. I’m really digging this tiny truck!

Redcat Ascent 32 Finished

I put this together from just parts I bought. I figured I wouldn’t use much from a RTR version, so I picked up everything I wanted for the truck.

She’s definitely tiny. The wood is a challenge for it, but it’s doing its thing.

It’s running on 3S, but it’s fully manageable power for it with the Mofo brushless. I thought it would be fun to assemble one of these. They look so raggedy in the stock form, so I figured I’d try to tame it and also get some steering power that works while I’m at it.

The servo is an Injora micro 7kg servo. It’s tight in the chassis, so I widened it a bit to allow it to move with the axle. I couldn’t find a mount for the servo that fit this truck and servo. I now have three servos that I put in this thing. The ones that fit a mount made for the truck are lower voltage.

I installed an adjustable BEC for them, but then there’s even more wiring inside the body, and it’s quite limited on space. So, I cut the ears off the servo, used epoxy on a printed tray that I picked up. The servo is pretty much forever stuck to the tray now.

The Mofo brushless is pretty nice for this truck. It’s plenty fast, but it’ll absolutely creep well too.

I had bought a set of the stock wheels and tires because I wasn’t sure when the Meus wheels would arrive from Japan or wherever. While the RC4WD tires fit those rims, they would constantly come off. Since I had beadlock wheels coming, it wasn’t worth gluing them. There’s a good improvement over stock with the IROK tires.

Painting this little truck was purely trifling. I figured I’d keep it simple, but simple in this tiny body was still a challenge with taping everything.

All in all, it’s a pretty cool truck even though it’s so small. I don’t know that I’d ever buy another vehicle smaller than 1/18 scale though. I’ll try it outside later on, but I’m predicting that anything and everything will be an obstacle for it.

The articulation is minimal, but I kinda figured it would be, given how short the shock travel is. I may try longer shocks down the road. I’ll probably also add a little more weight on top of the steering servo as well. There’s not really many more spots to add unsprung weight. I don’t really want to put weight inside the front tires.

Hopefully, this helps inspire someone to buy a bunch of parts, and enjoy some assembly time. No instructions required.

Redcat Ascent 32

So, I bought all of the parts for this truck, assembled and painted it.

I started with a Nexx carbon fiber chassis and went from there. The axles, body, bumpers, body mounts and axle shafts are Redcat products. Everything else are from other manufacturers.

The brushless motor is a Mofo Nanobam powered by a Furitek Lizard V2 ESC. The transmission is Injora, along with the shocks, suspension links, brass bits, and steering links. The sliders are brass from Amazon. The rims are Meus .7 with RC4WD IROK Super Swamper tires.

The steering servo is from Tiny 4x4, a metal gear Orlandoo Hunter three wire servo. I have an external adjustable BEC managing the voltage to it. While it does work, I’m going to try a different servo mount and micro servo. If that works out, I’ll just leave it in there. The servo mount will be here around the 18th.

It’s not my best paint job, but certainly not my worst. The body is so tiny, that it’s difficult to tape inside the body, so I did my goodest. The tape I used was the thinnest the hobby shop had, and still almost too wide for this scale. I had to get creative to make the stripes look like they fit the body.

For as small as it is, it’s a kinda cool truck. Everything can be an obstacle for it, given its tiny stature.

It’s nearly finished, as there’s nothing else that can be added to it after changing to a larger servo.

Not RTR version. I bought all of the parts, then assembled and painted the truck.

Smallest crawler I’ve ever assembled and used.

I bought everything as parts. I went with a Nexx carbon fiber chassis, MoFo NanoBam motor, Furitek Lizard V2 ESC, Injora parts including transmission, shocks, skid plate, and suspension links. The steering servo is a metal gear Orlando servo from Tiny 4x4.

It’s been years since I’ve painted a body from the inside, and I’ve never tried to paint one this small.

It’s not my best work, but I did worse when I was twelve years old.

I’ll probably post a video of it at some point.

Just thought I’d share.

So, I’ve gotten enough parts to assemble a Redcat 32.

I ended up just ordering the parts that I wanted for the truck vs just buying one. They never stay the same when you buy RTR anyway.

I went with a Nexx carbon fiber chassis, MoFo NanoBam motor, Furitek Lizard V2 ESC, Injora shocks, knuckles, differential covers, skid plate, transmission, and suspension links. The steering servo is a metal gear servo from Tiny 4x4.

I’ve got the stock tires and wheels that would normally come with it. I ordered Meus rims as well, for the RC4WD IROK tires for the truck. Still waiting on those rims.

In the photos, the wiring needs cleaned up. It runs well on 3S and is really smooth and slow, but it can go fast as well.

I tried it on a few dog toys and it did really well, but obviously, it’s very limited because of the small size.

I have decided on a simple three color paint job that hopefully be on par with an Earl Sheib paint job at least.

Once I finish everything up, I’ll post a video.

It’s actually pretty cool, and I like how slow and smooth it is. Turning radius has little to be desired though.

This is the progress so far.

I did swap tires eventually between the pair.

The outcome was the same.

Playing with AI…pretty crazy how close it can get to what you ask for.
