Work travel to Taipei/Taiwan for the first time

Hi, I’m travelling to Taipei this week for a few days to give some lectures in an academic setting. I have never been before. Hoping I can get some advice!

  1. How formal do people dress? Here on the west coast of North America it’s pretty casual even for visiting academic lectures. But wondering if I need to wear a suit and tie? It looks to be super hot!
  2. I have to give lectures in the morning and early evening. So I have a few hours in the day and evening to see something. Any highlights I should do? I like being active so any recommended walks would be great.

TdF Femmes is the best

I’m a total newbie to women’s bike racing and I’m totally converted by the TdF Femmes. So much more action, excitement and close racing compared to men’s racing nowadays.

Becoming a ski instructor - crazy/naive idea?

A little bit about me: I’m thinking of doing an early retirement/semi-retirement from my professional career. I’m financially independent and have a house in Whistler. Teaching and mentoring has always been part of my career and I love doing it. I like teaching beginners and kids, whatever the subject.

I hear it’s pretty easy to get a level 1 instructor certification and I was thinking it could be fun/keep me active and occupied to do part-time ski instructing. Is this possible or just a stupid idea? Is it naive of me to think this could be fun or is it just a slog of a job?

Advice on groupset for new bike

The last bike I bought was over 12 years ago and I went all out with the latest Dura-Ace Di2. Back then I used to ride 4 times a week, thousands of km a year, a couple of bike trips overseas and multiple gran fondos. Now I mostly do MTB, but still like the occasional road ride (every couple weeks) and gran fondo.

I’m looking to get a new bike - the wider tires, hydraulic disc brakes seem like a good upgrade. I don’t need the latest in tech and it’s hard to justify a lot of money on something I’m only going to ride occasionally, but want to do a light build as I enjoy climbing.

What are the new lower tier groupsets like, especially compared to my 12 year old Dura-Ace di2? Will the current Rival or 105 be a noticeable step down in performance and weight?

Advice for bike park

I started trail riding a couple of years ago and was thinking about trying out the bike park because it looks like fun but feeling intimidated by the videos I see. I got into mountain biking because I like climbing (came from road biking). Going down is fun and I’m comfortable on any blue and most single blacks (Vancouver north shore and Whistler) but I’m old and not that fast. I can’t really do any meaningful jumps.

Will Whistler bike park be wasted on me?

Do people get pissed off if they have to pass a slower rider?

Can I use my trail bike (long travel 160mm front, 150mm rear)?

Did Zwift racing score go through a revamp?

I haven’t raced or anything Zwift for a few months. Came back to do a race and my ZRS was below 330 (previously was greater than 410). My fitness and power did drop off a bit but Zwift would not know that. I know there is built in score drop if you haven’t raced in awhile but this seemed like a lot. Was there a recent revamping of scores? Didn’t see anything on Google search. Not that it makes much difference to me but I was just wondering.

I guess that’s it then…

The race is for 3rd place now. I’m predicting del Toro who’ll get the white jersey too. The unfolding drama of Evenepoel and Lipowitz should be a good watch too.

ICCU failure vs mileage

This is a follow-up to my previous post polling on ICCU failures and mileage for the Ioniq9. There were 59 responses, 8 of which reported a failure. The curve is a Kaplan-Meier analysis of ICCU survival vs mileage (in kilometres). The tick marks are censored data (mileage of cars with no issues) while the ‘steps’ in the curve are when a failure occurred at a particular mileage. Because there is a lot of censoring, the ‘tail on the curve’ is not accurate, reflecting how new the car is and the reported median mileage of 10,000 km. Looking at the curve, the key takeaway point is that the failures are occurring between 10,000-20,000. More data points and longer follow-up are needed to make the analysis more accurate/valid.

Follow up to the ICCU failure poll: tell me mileage and whether or not you’ve had an ICCU failure and I will analyze risk

Hi Everyone! Thanks to all those who replied to my poll on whether or not you’ve had an ICCU failure issue. It ends up about 10% of people who responded have. I have noticed that it seems to occur relatively early in people’s ownership in terms of mileage. I’d like to construct a ‘survival curve’ (I’m a researcher in my real life) of ICCU failure. So if you can respond how many miles/km you have driven your car and whether or not you have had an ICCU failure (yes/no), then I can construct a curve which will tell us if this is an early failure issue only vs a long term risk. Thanks!

Have you had an ICCU problem with your Ioniq 9?

Hyundai does not provide numbers publicly, so I thought we could do a totally invalid method to understand the scope of the problem. So, Ioniq 9 owners: Have you had an ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) failure or issue requiring service?

'Better than ever' - Jonas Vingegaard reveals two-year recovery from Itzulia crash, now on track to challenge Tadej Pogačar in the Tour de France

Vingegaard always seems like a real class act, relatively modest, grateful, and mature:

“I would love to win one more stage but I would actually also be very happy to see my teammates David Piganzoli or Sepp Kuss ending up with a stage.
"I'd also like Davide to win the white jersey. I would be very happy about that. He's an extremely good teammate, he's a good guy, and he will do absolutely everything for me. Now he's in a very good position for the white jersey, so if I have to help him a little bit, it's something that would make me very proud."
