Gave my grandfather a treat for his 82nd birthday ❤️
Last year, I posted here after taking my grandfather out for his 81st birthday and wrote about the life he had lived.
Appuppan turned 82 this month, so it was only right that we ran it back.
But this time, I wanted to share something about the kind of Appuppan he has been to me.
I was his first grandchild, so the whole Appuppan business was new to him. And judging by the things he did back then, he took this new position very seriously.
My mother gave birth to me while she was still studying for her B.Ed. Just two months later, she had to return to college to avoid ending up with a backlog. Her classes ran from 10 AM to 4 PM, with just a one hour lunch break between 1 and 2.
At the time,two-month old me was still entirely dependent on breast milk and needed to be fed every few hours. Formula was technically an option, but not an option this first timer Appuppan was willing to entertain. And letting his new grandson go more than six hours between feeds? That wasn’t happening on his watch either.
That left him with one small logistical problem: getting my mother home, giving her enough time to breastfeed me and eat her lunch, and then getting her back to college, all within that single one hour break.
So in order to solve this problem, this absolute madlad went ahead and bought a second-hand Ambassador, the first car our family ever owned, and hired a full-time driver to go with it.
Every afternoon at 1 PM sharp, the Ambassador would be waiting outside my mother’s college. The driver would bring her home, where she would feed me, quickly eat her lunch, and then be driven back before classes resumed at 2.
Appuppan had basically bought our family’s first car and turned it into a private lunch break shuttle service just to keep his grandson well fed and happy.
Before I was old enough to form a single memory of him, Appuppan was already moving things around to make sure I was well cared for.
Nearly three decades later, I got to take that same man out for his 82nd birthday. Not much of a return for everything he has done for me, but then again, this man set the bar fairly high.
Happy 82nd birthday, Appuppa.. ❤️
