I had one of the strangest customer messages a while ago, and I still think about it sometimes.
A customer messaged me saying that the tail had fallen off her possum car charm after only two days. She was understandably unhappy with the quality and sent me a photo.
At first I thought there must have been some kind of mistake, because I couldn't find her order in my shop.
Then we figured out what happened.
Her husband had bought the possum from a completely different Etsy seller.
She had simply assumed it was mine.
She also told me that the tail had been glued on, rather than sewn on. When it came off, she said she had a friend who crochets who would fix it and stitch it back on.
And honestly, this part really stuck with me.
I make crochet animals myself, and when I attach things like tails, legs, ears, etc., I actually sew them into the piece. It takes more time, but I want the finished item to be able to survive being handled and used as intended.
The funny/sad part is that the customer was complaining to the wrong seller. 😂
It also made me wonder how much buyers actually know about how handmade products are constructed.
Especially now, when Etsy is full of products with beautiful listing photos — and sometimes it's difficult to tell whether something was actually handmade, mass-produced, or even generated with AI in the listing images.
Have you ever had a customer confuse another seller's product with yours? Or had a customer assume two handmade-looking products were made in the same way?
I'm genuinely curious how other Etsy sellers deal with this.

But the customer stopped responding, so he’s still here waiting.
I couldn't just keep him hidden away, so I thought I'd show him to some people who might understand how special Bull Terriers are. ❤️
