Merlin (2008)
In honor of Anthony Head, who sadly died today, I will be posting a show I’ve been meaning to re-watch. That show, as you can probably tell from the title, is Merlin (not to be confused with the 1998 miniseries of the same name, which is also on Tubi and which you should all go watch as well).
I first saw him as Giles, on Buffy, and I loved him. Buffy is not on Tubi, unfortunately, but Angel is, though Giles doesn’t ever make an appearance (it’s definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it, and can separate art from artist, re: Joss Whedon). I feel like Anthony Head was a very underrated actor. He was so kind and lovely as Giles, and so soft-spoken as well. It came as a great shock to me when I first saw him play an asshole, even though I’m aware of what acting is.
Enter Uther Pendragon. Unbending. Bigoted. Tyrannical. Still, his character had depth, and even humor at times. Anthony Head embodied his character with great aplomb, as only he could.
My favorite Anthony Head character was, indeed, Giles, but I was always so delighted to see him on the screen, no matter what his character was like. What was your favorite Anthony Head character?
