How do I get into practical aspect of ML

1st yr ended 1.5 months ago and I Have been following ML for past week. Attended three lectures of Andrew Ng - covering Linear, logistic regression. While I am getting the theoretical and mathematical aspect of ML via his lectures, I have absolutely no idea on how to get hands dirty ,practical learning, what projects to make, the required python libraries, etc. Please suggest a good guide for that.

P.S : I know basic python(not OOPS in python if required), numpy, pandas, matplotlib & Seaborn.

My ultimate goal by next year is to publish some paper in A* ML conf, and apply for Research Interns in top global uni for next summers. Sincere advice needed. Critics appreciated too.

The quant hype

Honestly I'm seeing many juniors picking up college solely based on placements and some choice pick seem really awful. I'd like to suggest few things.

  1. There are few companies like : TRC, Quadeye, Graviton, Optiver, Alphagrep, NKS, Squarepoint, etc. quant companies.

  2. High paying SDE companies : Rubrik, Harness, etc.

Now the companies I mentioned in (1) and (2) are Quite tier biased. They are selectively about their choice of students. What I mean by biased is even if a person X is better for a specific role compared to a person Y but Y is in the college they have in their "To-hire-from" list, they'd prefer Y over X.

A)Is it bad? : Probably, probably not - it's their requirement and we are no one too judge.

B)Should we run after these companies ? : Well it's human tendency to run after what's unachievable - and it's not bad.

Although these companies are really high paying, one mustn't limit their career options to just a high playing placement. Am I saying this for everyone ? No. Some people NEED a good placement and it's fine. A college is a bigger place to learn and enjoy - not a placement machine, try out things, research, and explore your interest.

After class 12th money might seem like the primary goal but there's more to life. And well there are much better companies - MAANGO. They are always at the top for a reason(Work-Life Balance). Whilst the aforementioned companies (1) & (2) have higher pay and elitist requirements, the downside is WLB. MAANGO on the other side has both WLB & a high pay.

This above example was just w.r.t placements btw.

I see many people glazing towards BITS G/H, IIITH over top NITs. I'm not saying they are bad - all are good here but atleast think of other aspects apart from placements (Like interest, research, social life).

I had 99.55%ile and 7XXX rank in JEE - 2025.

I'm personally from DTU CS, gave up IIT G Civil and IIITB B.tech DSAI - so you see i had options which really contrast. A fun clg + MAANGO opportunity, an elite college but no interest field and a freakin placement machine.

So just choose wisely.

My post doesn't reflect any pick this or that. It's just an awareness.

Also don't pick elite college with a bad branch, the price is heavy sometimes. Indians are quite "bhedchaal" type of peeps (sorry to say), you'd find people glazing too much for some college and hating on some for absolutely "suni-sunai-baatein".

Career Guidance Needed

I'm an upcoming sophomore in CS branch. I want to go for MS/PhD in CS/ML/MFE abroad like CMU/Harvard/Baruch/Princeton etc Can any senior help about how much feasible is this and if yes then how should I approach it. Im planning onto PhD ONLY directly after Btech or MS/PHD after few yrs of work experience.

I need a shot at quant

A little background of mine

JM : 99.5%ile

JA : 79XX Rank

10th && 12th PCM > 95%

I'm currently in DTU(1st year) with ~9.5 CG.

While quant firms like TRC, Databricks, Quadeye, Ebullient, GS do visit DTU but only for SWE roles.(Ebullient visited for QD role though at 85 LPA CTC). Except for better than SDE role, Palantir visits DTU sometimes For FDE role. Now well I'm willing to put in efforts for QT/QR or even QD. Is it possible that if I have a SDE background and later pursue Masters or PhD abroad , I'll have a chance at it? Currently I'm looking forward to ICPC and IICPC, nothing else. But I also want to put in efforts for masters/phd abroad in relevant field.

While DTU do have seniors at top schools with quant course such as CMU, Georgia Tech but their coursework isn't any near to Quantfinance.

Edit : Img1 and 3 was when I waved my hair backwards with my hand.

Indian Origin

As you can see I have very very weird hair. Call it frizz + thin + superrdry + what not. I just don't know what shall I do- I am no hair specialist. I've been on minoxidil 5% for 3 months and finasteride daily 1 mg oral for 4 days (recently started). Hairline is not an issue, I believe it will get back and there's no reduction in hair density, it's fine(None in my mother and father side have had hair problems).

My current schedule is :

I apply oil(soulflower rosemary or coconut oil mixed with camphor) 2-3x a week at night then next day

Shampoo it with ketaconazole shampoo(rare) or Loreal Hydraluaon Shampoo followed by a Tresemme Keratin control conditioner.

I bath daily so after bathing I apply morr rich hair cream (Mind-i apply it Daily). Nothing except these.

Been on this cream for like 20-25 days , the dryness has improved much but the frizz and whatever this weird thing my hair has isn't fixed. I really need specialists from this sub to help me out :(

I also purchased bare anatomy rice water hair spray but I didn't know how to use , it dried up my hair alot so didn't use
