[Mixed Trope] Adaptational Sympathy

When a character in media who had no motive or had a more twisted motive is rewritten so audiences might sympathize with them better
The Onceler (The Lorax 2012) an absolute ass movie and adaptation. The Onceler is given a face and is manipulated by his parents to continue growing the company. The thing is, it barely goes into detail and frames the nature destroying greedy businessman as a soft boy “who didn’t know what he was doing!” Until it was too late. The Onceler in the book knew what he was doing. Mr Krupp (Captain Underpants 2017) Mr Krupp in the book is a child abusing totalitarian principal who actively tries to break children’s spirits. Th difference is that he had no prior development in the books. He just was that way. In the movie his actions are changed. He is simply a strict principal and due to his loneliness hates to see others happy. Adaptational sympathy works but it depends on the characters actions and how well they are written. [both characters are voiced by Ed Helms!]

I really like the Pillar skin. Impractical tactical gear that looks like a caterpillar seems like something a low budget superhero movie would come up with

The movie could’ve been a shitshow. Low quality, low effort poop humor that completely missed the point and charm of the books. With book adaptations you see this a lot. Cat in the hat,Harold and the Purple Crayon,Boss Baby, etc. even going into Game adaptations like the Mario movies. It could’ve been another run of the mill DreamWorks movie, but the difference between this movie and the others is that they actually TRIED. EFFORT and LOVE went into this movie. Witty writing, funny humor, and a classic in my household.
