Didn’t make this for a poverty reason, but this is cheap enough for a poverty meal

This is leftovers from two days of meals for 4th of July weekend entertaining. Looked better on day I made it, but still tastes good today! Smoked a pork shoulder on a charcoal grill (don’t need an expensive smoker), made baked beans completely homemade (from dried beans). We cut up some raw veggies (cucumbers, carrots) to serve as another side on day one with 8 people. Day two someone brought pasta salad and Waldorf salad (both are cheap to make) for 8 more people. Also buns to make sandwiches if you wish.

I get that meat can be expensive, but pork shoulders can be found on sale for reasonable prices. We got a 9 lb shoulder. BBQ sauce also homemade and was inexpensive to make. Ultimately I’ll get 18 servings from this shoulder.

You have options though. No charcoal grill? Cut into smaller sizes and make a portion in a slow cooker. Or make in a Dutch oven. Recommend some smoked paprika get incorporated into it if no smoker or charcoal grill.

Anyone ever buy a quarter or half a cow for beef?

We have been doing this for awhile now, but if you can swing it - buying a portion of an animal for meat will provide savings thru the year. You can also look into a hog or a whole lamb.

It’s a great budget help; however, an investment up front can pay food dividends into the future. We put our order into the butcher, and we’ll pick up the food in about a month.

I’ve ditched the degenerate gambler in me and invested in ETFs to hold for long term IMHO

I’ve stopped with the DRAM, DTCR and SOXQ holdings. I’m still a fan of tech for the long term so I have VGT. I have a momentum ETF in VFMO that’s less tech exposed. Also have AVUV and AVDV for small cap exposure. This is my IRA. My 401k is VOO, VXUS, VXF and bonds.

I think long term these will be good. Retire possibly in 10 years but most likely 13/15 years.

Markets are gonna rip today - inflation within predicted estimates

U.S. 10 year bond is down 0.033 - which was down around 0.08 yesterday. WTI is 69.90 and Brent at 73.18.

Barring any surprise bombings, embargoes, etc

Anyone investing in VFMO?

I currently own VUG, and I’m a little fortunate in that I bought in at the dip in March of this year and I’m still up 13% for the year vs the YTD figure. I’d like to switch to VFMO, but it’s pricey since its ytd growth is almost 30%. But maybe for momentum that’s to be expected?

I hear a lot about SPMO but little about VFMO. Good ratings on Morningstar.

Education can be gateway out of poverty - but can get challenging

My daughter and her husband struggled for a couple years while the balanced completing their schooling, illnesses that caused some time off from university and trying to get by on a single income. Modest place where rent was less than $700 per month.

Things are much better for them now. They moved for my kids job after graduation from university and he found employment pretty quickly as well. Having skills are important - STEM degree for her and maintenance knowledge for him. They’ll be making around $150k combined in a good COL area. Not the greatest start but good.

Moral of the story is developing skills that make it harder to replace you. Education helps. While some made it big without education, they’re the exception and not the rule. I have faith in those here as well who are struggling while working on their education and skill development. There’s light at the end of the tunnel!

Consider baking as a very cheap alternative to buying junk food at the store

Especially if you have kids, baking treats are a great way to help your kids feel like they’re not deprived.

We’re in poverty finance mode temporarily at least - roughly $100,000 of total debt to pay off

We’re trying to pay off this debt - and it’s challenging! Sacrificing today for a better tomorrow. We’re all in it together!

Lunch - and a request for some advice

Made a salad with romaine lettuce, grape tomatoes and a can of sardines packed in oil (skin and bones included). I used the sardine oil and some lemon juice and zest from a lemon and whisked together to make a lemon dressing. Decent but it fell short.

Would adding an egg yolk make a much better dressing? Anything else I should add?
