Resilient fatigue

A while ago I just stopped checking because I got burnt out watching Stephanie continue to fail. Every once in a while I pop back in here just to check and see, but there’s been absolutely no progress in… anything. It’s been months. I never watched her stuff directly anyway (only ever came in here instead of giving her views/engagement) but I hope for her kids sake she one day just gets so irrelevant that everyone stops covering her, watching her, and she has no choice but to do something (anything!!) except endanger her kids online for content

Do yourself a favor and get the bird bath

If you, like me, plant native for the birds - take the leap and get the bird bath! Check your local DNR resources for best practices for native birds (easy step outs like a rock, frequent cleaning, etc). It takes the native garden to a whole new level :) we’re having a massive heatwave here in the Midwest and I just refreshed mine. As soon as I got it back in its holder there was a whole bunch of robins throwing a pool party in it. Highly recommend!!

Who’s streaming tonight?

Cam chowder (my personal fav) is going to be shifting schedules and guy just posted that he’s not streaming tonight. Who else streams these weirdos?

And before anyone comments, I DO NOT WATCH THE GETCHELLS FROM THEIR OWN STREAMS 🗣️

Native plant hot takes: lay them on me

I’ll go first: I know bee balm is an extremely important plant, but I absolutely hate the way Monarda fistulosa smells. To me it is just straight up like an herbal fart.

(I have lots of M. didyma instead 🐝)

Robin resource guarding - does the Cesar Milan method work on native songbirds?

I think I mentioned before on here that I have a blueberry patch that the birds keep picking clean before I can get a SINGLE berry. There’s a blueberry I’m eyeballing that’s huge as hell (I put it on my thumbnail for ref in this photo). How do I assert dominance in this area of my property to let the birds know that while I technically did plant a shit ton of their native diet berries specifically for them I want them to leave these particular bushes alone?? I thought they would get the message with the fence — inside these walls I am the top dawg and the food belongs to me.

/uj fuck Cesar Milan, also the fence is just to keep the deer out of my food area. I like to share irl :)

Tracking stewardship with birdsong!

Around this time last year the only thing we had listed in Merlin was a house sparrow (our neighbor unfortunately feeds them; there’s nothing we can do about this. We do not provide any manmade shelter or put out any feeders) but I love seeing our species list grow :) we also have kirtlands warblers deeper into the property that we absolutely adore and protect like crazy from the cowbirds. Native birdsong is my “why” and I love to be able to keep track of the progress with actual song clips

Customized Rose of Sharon "Bush"

I kept "pulling" what I thought was a weed for years. Finally I gave in & let it grow (before the Internet years). Then it bloomed one year & I recognized it as a rose of sharon. My husband doesn't want "big trees" planted near the house, so I decided to twist the branches around each other & keep it trimmed up. I once saw this done with a lilac before. I'll post more pics when it's in bloom.

planted berries for the native songbirds and they ate them all, wtf?

I literally planted 6 giant brambles 20 strawberry patches and an entire quarter acre of high bush blueberries because they’re “what the native birds need to eat” (ok) and those greedy mfs didn’t even bother to leave me a single berry as a thank you? the only thing I’ve received in return is a bunch of Japanese knotweed seedlings from their poops and robins screaming outside my window at 5 am. thanks a lot I guess????

/uj the return of birdsong is such a beautiful thing and makes life’s problems feel so small :’)

i need native bees to stop being so dumb

ignore what he’s sitting on (i know, i KNOW, i self flagellate daily in the town square for my disgusting sins, and if it makes you feel better I purposely only cultivate the hardest and most annoying tea varieties so it’s like a punishment in itself. also i do eat them in rose jam and actual tea.)

like i know they’re very important to our ecosystem, they’re in serious danger because of the honeybee and destruction of natural habitat etc. i get it!! but how are you going to fly straight into me and bonk yourself off of my head not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES?!?! i hype you up to my friends and you just embarrass me like this??? how the hell am i supposed to help a population thrive if they have the survival instincts of a potato?? get it together, bees.
