How to talk about being mixed/ethnicity in French

Okay so I'm wondering how I would say my ethnicity in French. Let's say my ancestors are from antarctica. In English I would say I'm part black-antarctican, part white-antarctican, and part Chinese-antarctican.

This way basically shows your race but also your ethnicity, if that makes sense. Because if I just said I'm Chinese it might make people think I have recent ancestry from China, when I'm actually centuries removed from China. We are all antarcticans who've lived here for centuries and share a culture/language but we're different races and slightly different cultures and group histories. So in English the hyphen can denote this. Think African-American, French-Canadian, Afro-Cuban.

Obviously the hyphen can also mean that you have recent ties to that area, but if you're discussing already established diasporas people just understand. If I mention French-Canadians everyone know I mean Canadians with centuries-old French Heritage, not French people with canadian citizenship. That's actually super super complicated when you write it out lol.

Is there a way to talk about ethnicity in this way in French? Like could I say je suis chinoise-antarctique or would that sound weird? I'm Canadian for context but I'm learning metropolitan French. Any input is welcome!

Merci beaucoup!

ÉDIT: WE ARE NOT FROM ANTARCTICA THAT WAS AN EXAMPLE TO SHOW THE STRUCTURE!!

What fabric is 100% Pashmina

I just thrifted a scarf that says 100% pashmina on the tag but idk what that means. I’ve seen people say that it means cashmere, some specific kind of cashmere, cashmere and silk, wool, viscose. The scarf cost 25 dollars which is a lot for a thrift store so I’m hoping it’s like wool or cashmere. It’s beautiful either way

Hopefully an Indian redditor can give some insight bc there’s way too much conflicting info on the internet

What am I supposed to do with massive unisex uniforms?

I’m forced to wear hideous uniforms for work and they’re literally huge. It’s very clearly just men’s sizing. I also have it on loan so I can’t really alter it. For the pants I just roll up the hem and wear a belt. But the jacket is MASSIVE, it keeps sliding down my shoulders, sleeves are long af, and it’s just comically oversized. Mind you I wear XXS bc of my measurements but I’m 5’4 so not particularly short for a girl. I also have pretty long arms so???

I know it’s so as many people can fit as possible but wtf am I supposed to do? If I roll up the sleeves it always eventually comes down bc the sleeves are so wide it just falls again, especially since I move around so much

Anyone know what I can do to keep the sleeves up and get the shoulders to fit without damaging the jacket. I really don’t wanna have to buy it and take it in

PLEASE help me eat healthy and normally

Idk if anyone else does this but If I'm in the middle of something I'll just forget to eat and push it off for hours. And honestly it's not even forgetting. I WISH it was forgetting. I'm painfully aware of how hungry I am, I just... don't care? Or do care but don't do anything, or can't do anything. I basically procrastinate eating

It's like when you're at school and you know you have to get the essay in or else you're gonna fail and you want to start so badly but you just can't. That's me with eating. I can't describe the pain I've been in from hunger and I just don't care. I won't eat.

I'm literally incorrigible. There's no consequence bad enough to make me learn my lesson. I don't even know how to start. Even if the food is already prepared and right in front of me sometimes I just can't eat it. Sometimes I'll be eating and then have to get up and walk around because idk I can't focus on the food?? It's honestly funny typing it out like this but it sucks lmao. I also have no impulse control when I am in the mood to eat so????

I'm actually usually 2-5 pounds heavier when I'm on adderall but I stopped taking it because I'm trying to join the military (also the reason why I'm trying to get my eating habits in order). I'm still getting used to being off my meds and life just sucks rn omg. If anyone has tips for not procrastinating basic bodily needs please please help me

Bought something on June 18th and it still hasn't shipped?

Hi, this is my first time using poshmark. I bought a sweater a week ago and the seller still hasn't sent it out. Would it be rude to contact them at this point? I'm not trying to be impatient but I feel like 7 days with no update is kinda excessive. Their profile says they usually ship in 1 day

Can someone help me find a pattern like these bags?

Basically I want a bag that's either rectangular or slightly curved (like 2, 3, and 4), with 2 3d pockets at the front and ideally also at each side. Does anyone know any similar patterns? What type of fabric do you recommend if I can't get leather?

Racism in late 18th and early 19th century gothic literature

Note: this is just my analysis/opinion.

When racial/ethnic minorities are major characters, they're pretty much always villains. I think Zofloya (1806) is a perfect example of the way racism tends to manifest in gothic literature. Zofloya is a dark-skinned (potentially black) Moor who turns out to be quite literally Satan. The moral stance is very clear.

Yet like many gothic novels, Zofloya romanticizes the very thing it rails against. Zofloya is portrayed as handsome, charming, and well-liked by everybody. I think the novel really captures the simultaneous perceptions of the Orient as sensual, tempting and mysterious vs. godless, savage, and immoral in 18-19th century Europe. Notably, Zofloya inverts the hierarchy of white master/POC servant and is the dominant partner in his interracial relationship.

These themes are mirrored in The Black Vampyre (1819), (absolute GARBAGE), wherein the titular character is a Haitian slave who kills his master, kidnaps his son, and enters an interracial marriage with his former master's wife. Like Zofloya, the black vampire is described as beautiful and regal, but also savage and monstrous. Ultimately the book's overarching message is pro-slavery, although it does condemn the mistreatment of slaves.

Vathek (1786) is unique in that all of the characters are POC. It reads like a kind of folktale so it follows (Beckford's incorrect perception of) Islamic morality rather than Christian morality. Again there’s this romantic orientalism where oriental societies are portrayed as alluring, fantastical, and irrational. The Manuscript Found in Saragossa (1805) also draws heavily on ideas of the orient as both immoral and sensual/enticing.

POC characters are also pretty frequently used as plot devices. In the vampire stories Clarimonde (1836) and Carmilla (doesn't fit the time period but anyway), the externally perfect and innocent vampires are juxtaposed with their black servants, described as ugly and demonic. This serves to tell the reader that the vampires are 1. of exotic and mysterious origin 2. evil. In The Monk (1796) a romani woman is similarly used as a harbinger of doom, although she's not malicious. The Monk also relied on The Wandering Jew myth.

This post is wayyy too long so I'll stop now.

TLDR: racism in 18th and early 19th century gothic lit was a lot more nuanced and complex than "I hate X," and portrayed racial/ethnic as both alluring and exotic as well as inferior and immoral.

Side note: I was just arguing with someone over whether vampires could be black -- the first ever American vampire story (published in 1819) was about a black vampire!
