Overwhelmed With Financing My Studies!

Hello everyone, I hope you had a great weekend!

I’m an international student coming to UC for the February intake to study a Masters in Data Science

I’ve been trying to work out a realistic budget for my first year, and honestly, I’m getting a little overwhelmed 😭. I’ve looked through Reddit, Facebook groups, cost-of-living websites, and various student discussions, but I’m seeing very different numbers. Some people say Christchurch is quite manageable, while others quote extremely high living costs, so I’m starting to lose my mind trying to figure out what’s actually realistic.

My tuition fee is around NZ$55,000, which as I understand it covers my full 17month, 180point programme.

For accommodation, I’m planning to share a flat with one other person, preferably a 2-person setup where I have my own room. I’ve also tried to account for food, utilities, transport, personal expenses, and some travel.

Based on my research so far, I’m considering a first-year budget of around NZ$100,000 in total, including tuition. That leaves approximately NZ$45,000 for living expenses for the first 12 months.

So my main question is: Is NZ$45,000 enough for one year of comfortable living in Christchurch?

I’m not looking for a luxury lifestyle, but I also don't want to live extremely frugally. Ideally, I’d like to have a decent shared flat, eat well, occasionally eat out, use public transport, have some social life, and do some travelling around New Zealand.

I’ve tried to research this properly, but I’m worried that I may be missing some major expenses that I haven’t considered.

I’d really appreciate hearing from current University of Canterbury/Christchurch students or anyone living in the area. If you could share what your realistic monthly expenses look like, especially for rent, groceries, utilities and transport, it would really help me plan my finances with some confidence.

Where do masters students stay?

Hello everyone, I am a prospective International student for MSc Applied Data Science course and I would love to know where the masters students stay.

Is there accomodation provided by the university?

Do people stay in private apartments? What would be the better option of stay and how much am I looking at? I like to keep life after Uni to myself but I want to socialize well too, Please feel free to give your honest opinion. Thanks a bunch!!

Help with Universities

Hello, I am an International prospective student for Masters. I will be very direct, please I need help from you guys I've gone through many posts in this sub regarding masters and I've learnt a fair amount about Universities and how they work. I don't want do a masters in degree mils which are called private HBO's in Netherlands.
I major in Computer Science and I completed my degree in May of 2025, I have 1 year Internship experience with 2 development projects. My GPA is 2,0 with IELTS being 7,0.
I want to do masters in CS related fields(mainly Software Engineering, Data Science or any Development related courses). And work for a product based company in NL.
I've heard some of the Uni's in NL specialize only Finance or IT field etc.
Can you guys please suggest me some Universities which relate with my goals? It would help me a lot listening to people who live in NL and have unbaised opinions.
Thank You!

Query Regarding Trier Application.(NLP)

Hello everyone, does the green valid tick symbols mean anything the overview section of my application? Every single subsection of the overview has a valid tick mark, is that supposed to mean something?
I've seen people saying they got an admit a week before or much earlier. I have not heard anything from them since May 18th.
I want to know if admits come first, then rejections. Or is it just delusional hope to think there's a chance if every subsection is valid with a tick mark? Please let me know if you have any idea about it.
Thank You.
