New Hire AIP question

Just graduated and got a job offer starting next week. I got a 4% AIP in my offer letter. Would I get the full 4% since I'm starting in August?

What online masters program should I go for?

Just graduated in BS in Computer Science and currently working a job as a Systems Engineer for a defense contractor. They're willing to pay for my masters. Would love some input on people that have done their masters. Also want to know if I'll be a strong candidate for a masters program.

I have 2 years of research for a defense contractor during my undergrad.

6 months of internship with a local small defense contractor.

GPA for undergrad is 3.5

New Hire Imposter Syndrome

Hi everyone,

I was recently hired as a Systems Engineer, and I’m only in my first week. During college I had experience with testing, verification, and requirements through research projects, but nothing at this level.

I’m currently waiting on my security clearance, so I’ve mostly been doing onboarding and learning as much as I can. At the moment, I feel like nothing is clicking. There are so many acronyms, tools, and company-specific terms that I’m constantly searching everything up.

My manager and teammates have been incredibly helpful and reassuring, but I still can’t shake the feeling that I don’t belong or that I won’t be able to keep up. I also came from a Computer Science background rather than a traditional Systems Engineering degree, which adds to that feeling.

Did anyone else feel this way when they started at Raytheon? How long did it take before things started to make sense? Any advice for a new Systems Engineer would be greatly appreciated.

When should I pull the trigger for a house?

My girlfriend and I are trying to figure out the best financial strategy over the next 4–6 years as we save for our first home.

Me (26M):
Engineer, 2 years out of college
Salary: $105k
HYSA: $35k
401(k): $18k

Girlfriend (24F):
Medical field
Salary: $77k
HYSA: $8k
401(k): $5k

Our situation:
Combined income: ~$182k
Both cars are paid off
No student loans
No credit card debt or other consumer debt
Rent: $1,700/month + around $200 in utilities

Our goal is to buy a home in the $700k–$800k range in about 4–6 years. Right now we’re trying to decide where our extra money should go. Should we:

Max out our 401(k)s?
Invest in a taxable brokerage account (S&P 500/index funds)?
Keep building our HYSA for the down payment?
Do some combination of the above?

We’re looking for the most efficient strategy to balance retirement savings while still putting ourselves in a strong position to buy a house in our target timeframe. What would you do if you were in our situation? Any advice or things we’re overlooking would be greatly appreciated.

Inherited my dads entire watch collection. Have no idea what to do and what’s each is worth.

Dad passed away last week and I had to fly in from out of state. Mom said he left me all his watches. There’s over 30 watches. Each has paperwork along with a jewelry store paperwork authenticating the gold value. Not sure what to do with them or how to proceed.

Specifically I want to know the model or part number of the first Rolex. Mom said he kept saying that’s it’s his prized possession how the entire watch is made of gold.

Any tips and advice would be appreciated.

UPDATE 7/11: I just want to say thank you to everyone for the advice and kind words. I never imagined my dad’s collection was this extensive. His passing was unexpected, so this has all been overwhelming to process. I always knew he collected watches, but I had no idea just how special the collection was until I started going through everything. Thanks to this community, I’ve realized these are much more than valuable watches, they’re a part of him that I get to hold onto. I’ve decided I won’t be selling a single watch. They’re far too sentimental. Instead, I’m going to take my time researching each one and learning the stories behind them. As for wearing them, that’ll probably take some time. I’m a new grad, still pretty young, and the only watches I’ve ever owned are Apple Watches. It feels a little surreal knowing I’ll eventually be wearing pieces that meant so much to my dad. This subreddit will soon be home to me as I go through each watch trying to figure what it is and its history.

New Grad Engineer - Accepted Offer 10 Days Ago. Is This Normal?

Hey everyone,

I recently graduated and accepted an engineering position with Raytheon about 10 days ago. I’ve been checking the onboarding portal and noticed that Clearance Processing is already marked as completed, along with US Person Verification and Drug Screen. However, Background Check, Relocation, and Onboarding Launch are still showing as in progress.

Should I be worried about the background investigation? I’m just really anxious on organizing my move since the new job is halfway across the country.

Thanks!

Recent Engineering Grad Considering Fort Wayne Relocation – Advice on Neighborhoods, Safety, and Healthcare Jobs?

Hey everyone,

I’m a recent engineering graduate from Southern California and recently received a job offer in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I’m seriously considering relocating and wanted to get some insight from locals before making the move.

A little about us:
I’m an Asian male, born and raised in Southern California. My girlfriend is also Asian and is currently working toward completing her Radiologic Technology (Medical Imaging) degree.
We’d likely be moving together if I accept the position.

I’ve done quite a bit of research already and understand that, like most cities, Fort Wayne has some great areas and some areas that are best avoided. I was hoping to get some local perspectives on a few things:

  1. How is Fort Wayne overall for young professionals?

  2. How safe is the city, especially for an Asian couple?

  3. How is the healthcare industry in the area? Are there good opportunities for someone pursuing a career in medical imaging/radiology?

  4. What neighborhoods or suburbs would you recommend for a young professional couple? Are there any areas you’d strongly suggest avoiding?

  5. For anyone who moved from California (or another large metro area), what was the adjustment like?

We’re looking for a safe area, reasonable commute, and a good place to build our careers and eventually settle down.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you’re willing to share!

New Grad Looking for Advice – Moving Out With GF

I graduated two weeks ago and recently got converted to full time salary from my internship making $81,000/year, which comes out to about $5,000/month after taxes. There's also a possibility of a raise to around $88,000 by the end of the year.

My girlfriend is currently in school for radiologic technology and works as a medical assistant, bringing home about $2,400/month after taxes. Combined, we make roughly $7,400–$7,500/month after taxes.

Right now, I've been living with my girlfriend's family since college and pay $600/month, while my gf pays $300/month. Financially, staying where we are would allow us to save more money, but the home situations on both sides have become increasingly difficult and stressful. At this point, we're considering moving out not because we want luxury or independence for its own sake, but because we feel it would give us a healthier environment and allow us to focus on our careers and future.

We've both been at our jobs for nearly a year, so we feel reasonably stable employment-wise.

Our finances look like this:

Me

  • Income: ~$5,000/month after taxes
  • Savings: $20,000
  • Car payment + insurance: $400/month
  • Phone: $100/month

Girlfriend

  • Income: ~$2,400/month after taxes
  • Savings: $5,000
  • No significant monthly bills

Combined savings are about $25,000.

My question is: Would it be financially irresponsible for us to move out together right now, or are we in a reasonable position to do so given our income and savings? For those who have been in a similar situation, what rent range would you feel comfortable with on our income?
