Tips on getting eel loaches out of a planted and scaped tank?

Hi! First time loach keeper here.

I currently have 6 eel loaches in my 54L tank, but I want to upgrade them to my 120L and add a few more to their school, but I’m stumped on how to get them out, the tank is heavily planted and there’s lots of hardscape too (wood, rocks, hides, leaf litter, etc.) there is only one “clearing” right at the front of the tank but they’re so speedy to dash into the hardscape when i open the lid.

They share their tank with 11 kubotai rasbora, some neo and amano shrimp and one very chill but curious and food greedy betta. I’m worried a loach trap would hurt some of the other inhabitants but I really don’t want to have to clear out the whole tank to get them.

Looking for any advice on what’s worked for other people please!

Do my corys gills look inflamed?

Please help.

I’m worried about them.

Parameters are:
Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10, pH 8.0, GH 8, KH 5

They are all active and eating but the first one specifically looks pale.

I believe they may have been carrying parasites since before I got them. I’ve lost 4 out of 7 so far despite treating for internal parasites after losing the first one.

Wondering if I should treat for gill flukes? All other tank mates (pearl danios and neo shrimp) are completely fine, healthy, and active.

Please help! What could be causing my corydoras to lose colour like this?

So I just want to clarify this is my first time keeping fish, a few weeks ago I lost a couple of my corydoras to what i believed to be parasites that they had from before I got them.
(i’ll linked the post i made then in the comments)

I treated the tank with esha ndx and followed all the instructions.

The rest of the corys (brochis splenden) all seemed fine except one who remained really pale (pic 1) the others all seemed fine and fairly well coloured up, the occasionally come out paler from hiding/sleeping but colour up in a minute or so.

We’ve also recently been having a heatwave in the UK, I’ve done my best to try to keep the tanks cool but their tank ended up creeping up to high end of 27C during the hottest point of the day yesterday. This happened despite turning the heaters off, having a fan pointed at the water surface, turning off the lights, and gradually adding cooler water (remineralised RO so no concern of GH, KH, PH swings).

Unfortunately when I came in yesterday evening he had passed seemingly in the hours I had been away :( He had seemed a bit weak a few days ago when he got stuck in some plants but after i freed him he seemed a bit stunned for a couple of minutes but then when i moved the tongs near him again he swam off and hid for about 5 mins before rejoining the other corys foraging and feeding, so i assumed it was just a brief shock from being stuck and now I feel bad for not asking earlier.

I’m still not sure what could have been the problem, but I wanted to ask to hopefully find out and prevent it happening to any of my remaining corys, I’m worried some of them might be getting paler, but I don’t know if i’m being paranoid 😭 (pic 3 and 4 but they are under red light rather than the usual full spectrum as it’s supposed to be less stressful for them)

Could this have just been a cory that was too weakened from the parasites that he couldn’t pull through even after treatment especially with the heat level or could it be something else?

Tank parameters are all stable, (PH: 8.0, Ammonia: 0, Nitrites: 0, Nitrates: 5-10, GH: 7 KH: 5) only temperature has been an issue. All other tank inhabitants (danios and neocaridina shrimp) are completely fine, normal activity and colouration.

Please help me out!

Is my girl fat or just a typical female?

Basically the title, to be fair to her i did take these photos right after she ate bloodworms, shes normally a bit less rotund.

She’s a bit round in the belly but not like bulging or anything. She’s active and curious, loves interaction, eats well (mainly fluval nano bug bites, 6-8 pellets a day but she also gets bloodworms or other frozen food 1-2 times a week), she also gets one day of fasting per week.

do amanos kill neos? or was this guy already a goner?

Came downstairs this morning to see an amano eating a blue neocaridina head 😭 This is my first time keeping shrimp.

They are in a shrimp only tank and parameters are 0 ammonia and nitrite, 20 nitrate, 7GH, 5KH, 7.6 PH.

They are fed every 2-3 days to encourage them to graze on the algae, at feeding they get either half an algae wafer (the wafers I have are HUGE), a hikari sinking pellet, or bloodworms.

Two dead corys? :(

[Found at different times, these photos are of only one of them, I didn’t have my phone on me when I found the other].

So I have gotten these brochis splenden around 2 months ago, they are still fairly young, around 4-5cm and still showing some juvenile colouration on their head areas.

Tank is a planted 130L which was fully cycled for two months before any livestock was added. Only new thing that had been added recently was some new amazon frogbit but it was a TC plant and i rinsed it thoroughly in dechlorinated tap water before adding it to the tank.

This evening I sat down to algae scrape my glass before feeding time when I noticed one of my corys was belly up on the substrate in the front corner.

I checked to see if he was responsive at all but he had sadly passed atleast a few hours ago since he was still on the substrate but rigor mortis had seemingly started to set in, (his body was hard like plastic? but he still was slightly limp, not sure if this indicates anything else?)

I got him out and immediately tested the water, parameters were all perfect: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate, 8 GH, 5KH, 7.6PH, last time I tested was one week ago and parameters were exactly the same. I use API Liquid test kit, and I used strips as well to double check and test the chlorine and copper which are on the API strip tests and were both also 0.

After I tested I buried the little guy then went in to feed the tank so I could do a headcount, and only 5 out of what was once 7 corys showed up for bloodworms.

This seemed really suspicious so I checked the rest of the tank and found a very clearly deceased cory behind the hardscape, this one seemed to have passed at least a day or two ago as it looked like the shrimp had been nibbling on it, no idea why it didn’t float up. (I didn’t get a photo of that one unfortunately as I had forgotten my phone outside when I buried the first fish, but it was not a pleasant sight, it was bloated, had a missing eye and a partially eaten tail).

They share their tank with pearl danions and neocaridina shrimp so I doubt they were attacked or bullied by anything. During feeding, I always make sure food sinks to the bottom and do a headcount of the corys to be sure they’re all getting to eat. All other tank mates and corys all seem okay, they’re behaving normally and eating enthusiastically.

That said one of the corys had always been very shy since i got them, never came out into the front clearing except at feeding time, I assumed it was just a personality thing but I’m pretty sure this is the one that I found in the back of the tank and am thinking it was likely to have been a pre-existing issue.

Whats confusing me is the one at the front, it was likely one of the other two shy ones as there’s usually 5 constantly out but the 6th one used to join regularly for intervals unlike the 7th one, he usually hung out at the back right by the filter but often joined the others for zoomies and was always out for feeding.

When I checked the tank yesterday morning and afternoon, he was out and seemed completely fine foraging with the others, yesterday was their fasting day and I didn’t get to spend much time with them in the evening, so I can’t guarantee how he was then.

I thought I had seen him out and about this morning but I can’t be 100% sure if there were 5 or 6 of them out as I had a busy morning before I left the house :(

I have added some IAL to the tank and will keep monitoring the water, is there anything else I should check for or I can do? Any ideas what could have caused this?

orthopaedic boots?

Hi everyone!

I have been an avid boot wearer most of my life, I just love them, I have two pairs of favourite boots that I wore pretty much every day, and all the time (pics attached in comments)

However, I developed fibro around 1.5-2 years ago and unfortunately one of my biggest areas of issue are my legs/feet so I haven’t been able to wear them anymore as they just are not supportive enough and cause too much pain.

I was hoping someone could recommend a brand that’s orthopaedic which offers similar styles. (Ideally UK based, but am willing to consider other places too as long as they ship internationally!)

Thank you!

Is this eggs or clado?

Beginner here my tanks are only a few months old, so this is my first (i think) pregnant shrimp.

Just want to confirm with more experienced keepers if it is or do we need a salt dip?

(sorry my camera quality is awful, i’ll try to get some better pics in daylight tomorrow)

This may be unpopular opinion, but I prefer LOTS Aus and I’m sad they cancelled it to focus only on the US version.

I started finding and watching the US one first, and only after I finished all the current seasons I switched to the AUS version (I didn’t know it existed until then!) and i honestly liked it so much more.

I just think I find the US based show less relatable, I just feel that more people from the US cast seem to be less genuine and more infantilised, and I can’t stand a lot of the US families, who clearly answer the why to that.

I also feel like there’s just SO much focus on the US all the time, so it was refreshing to get to see how different people on the spectrum approach their search for love across the world and I wish they’d gone with a more international approach to the show (eg. a few seasons of Aus, a few seasons of US, maybe a few seasons somewhere else, etc.). I’m sad that it seems like they’ve just gone all in with the US version because apparently that’s what picked up traction. :/

Health Advice (+ bonus update)

so my silly noodle son is healing amazingly! as you can see in the pic his scars have really drastically faded over the last week.

I wanted to share this to update anyone who was interested from my last posts and for all the amazing people who were so helpful and kind when I was worried and confused.

However, I am also sharing this update to address the commenter who was condescending and not only misdiagnosed the situation but also rudely insisted that my loach would die if I didn’t blindly listen to their advice to isolate and medicate with harsh treatments.

So I want to remind anyone else who may be on this sub that you absolutely can find really helpful information and reassurance here, but PLEASE keep in mind to always do your own research and take the time to understand and observe the symptoms you are seeing with your own eyes before acting, administering the wrong treatment can have devastating consequences.

The diagnoses that you get on here are a starting point for what to look at, remember that seeing some photos or videos and a small description online does not give the same picture as actually getting to monitor your animal and water. From the suggestions of conditions I got from both online forums and google searches I cross referenced images and descriptions of symptoms with what I was actually seeing and observing, and from there I made the decisions for how to best treat it.

Clearly I made the right decision because this noodle is now named Snowball and he continues to be one of the most confident and curious of my kuhlis, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. ☺️

Have a great day all!

ETA:

For anyone who may see this and be having the same issue, here is what it turned out to be, what I did:

I got pretty lucky as far as potential things it could have been go.

It turned out to have just been scratches/scars from an area of driftwood I had missed when sanding it that this guy had chosen to make his nest under.

I try to stay pretty on top of my water quality and readings were 0 ammonia and nitrate and 5.0 nitrite, ph, gh, kh were all stable, and I regularly add indian almond leaves for the benefits and the slight black water look.

So all I really had to do here was sand down the abrasive area on the wood then just maintain my water as is and I added an extra IAL for good measure.

Update: Kuhlii with white patches

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/pangio/s/tawsBv2Ova

Hello all, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who commented on my last post trying to help me figure out what was wrong with my poor loach.

Through lots of monitoring since I noticed it and process of elimination by researching all the suggestions I got for what it could possibly be, I believe the correct answer for my specific case is that this little dude has managed to find the one small part of the wood that I missed when I sanded it while scaping and chosen to make his nest underneath it 🙄😭

I believe I have found the culprit snag this evening and smoothed it down best I could, so hopefully this won’t be an issue again, but I will obviously keep a close eye on this guy and the others to make sure we don’t see any more injuries.

My next course of action is to just make sure the water stays pristine and up the amount of IAL in the tank to help ensure the scars can fully heal without worry of infection.

Here’s a video of him from tonight after I fed the tank (bloodworm night is their fave) he was one of the first kuhlis to come out for the food, he’s active, curious, eating well, no clamped fins or irregular breathing, and confident enough to hold his share of food against the shrimp, kubotai, and other kuhlis, and alert enough that when i leaned in too close to the tank to try to get a better look at him he was gone before i could blink, so he’s definitely not showing any behavioural signs of illness at all. I was so glad to see him out and about like this, so I hope it brings some of you joy too!

Thank you all so much again, I will keep update if anything changes.

What are these white patches?

Hello! I have had these kuhli loaches for about 3 weeks now.

There are 6 of them in my 15 gal which is planted and has lots of hides/hardscape and sandy substrate.

The others all look fine from what I have seen of them but this one came out today at feeding time and seems to have stark white patches on its body!! he seems to be eating and otherwise fine though.

these have either shown up overnight or this is a kuhli who has been hiding when I’ve been watching the tank and I’ve not seen him before to notice this developing.

When I got them there were a few that were significantly paler than the others but I assumed that was just stress colouration from shipping/transport. Could this be the remnants of that as regular colour returns or is it an injury/illness?

If it isn’t normal colouration adjustment, how can I treat it?

My parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5.0 nitrate, 7.6 ph, 7 gh, 5 kh.

what kind of loaches do i have?

I have 6 of these little guys and I absolutely adore them. They’re much less shy than I expected initially and I can always see at least one or two out and about.

That said, I have them in a 15 gallon (60x30x31cm) as they were sold as “dwarf kuhli” but I think they’re looking more like p. kuhlii or semicinta?

If so is the tank still appropriate for them? It’s got sandy substrate, lots of hides and plants, and no other bottom dwellers aside from some shrimp.

I don’t want them to feel crowded but i also have no idea how i would transfer them to a bigger tank without taking apart my whole scape as they’re quick and sneaky little dudes😭
