Health Advice (+ bonus update)

so my silly noodle son is healing amazingly! as you can see in the pic his scars have really drastically faded over the last week.

I wanted to share this to update anyone who was interested from my last posts and for all the amazing people who were so helpful and kind when I was worried and confused.

However, I am also sharing this update to address the commenter who was condescending and not only misdiagnosed the situation but also rudely insisted that my loach would die if I didn’t blindly listen to their advice to isolate and medicate with harsh treatments.

So I want to remind anyone else who may be on this sub that you absolutely can find really helpful information and reassurance here, but PLEASE keep in mind to always do your own research and take the time to understand and observe the symptoms you are seeing with your own eyes before acting, administering the wrong treatment can have devastating consequences.

The diagnoses that you get on here are a starting point for what to look at, remember that seeing some photos or videos and a small description online does not give the same picture as actually getting to monitor your animal and water. From the suggestions of conditions I got from both online forums and google searches I cross referenced images and descriptions of symptoms with what I was actually seeing and observing, and from there I made the decisions for how to best treat it.

Clearly I made the right decision because this noodle is now named Snowball and he continues to be one of the most confident and curious of my kuhlis, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. ☺️

Have a great day all!

ETA:

For anyone who may see this and be having the same issue, here is what it turned out to be, what I did:

I got pretty lucky as far as potential things it could have been go.

It turned out to have just been scratches/scars from an area of driftwood I had missed when sanding it that this guy had chosen to make his nest under.

I try to stay pretty on top of my water quality and readings were 0 ammonia and nitrate and 5.0 nitrite, ph, gh, kh were all stable, and I regularly add indian almond leaves for the benefits and the slight black water look.

So all I really had to do here was sand down the abrasive area on the wood then just maintain my water as is and I added an extra IAL for good measure.

Update: Kuhlii with white patches

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/pangio/s/tawsBv2Ova

Hello all, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who commented on my last post trying to help me figure out what was wrong with my poor loach.

Through lots of monitoring since I noticed it and process of elimination by researching all the suggestions I got for what it could possibly be, I believe the correct answer for my specific case is that this little dude has managed to find the one small part of the wood that I missed when I sanded it while scaping and chosen to make his nest underneath it 🙄😭

I believe I have found the culprit snag this evening and smoothed it down best I could, so hopefully this won’t be an issue again, but I will obviously keep a close eye on this guy and the others to make sure we don’t see any more injuries.

My next course of action is to just make sure the water stays pristine and up the amount of IAL in the tank to help ensure the scars can fully heal without worry of infection.

Here’s a video of him from tonight after I fed the tank (bloodworm night is their fave) he was one of the first kuhlis to come out for the food, he’s active, curious, eating well, no clamped fins or irregular breathing, and confident enough to hold his share of food against the shrimp, kubotai, and other kuhlis, and alert enough that when i leaned in too close to the tank to try to get a better look at him he was gone before i could blink, so he’s definitely not showing any behavioural signs of illness at all. I was so glad to see him out and about like this, so I hope it brings some of you joy too!

Thank you all so much again, I will keep update if anything changes.

What are these white patches?

Hello! I have had these kuhli loaches for about 3 weeks now.

There are 6 of them in my 15 gal which is planted and has lots of hides/hardscape and sandy substrate.

The others all look fine from what I have seen of them but this one came out today at feeding time and seems to have stark white patches on its body!! he seems to be eating and otherwise fine though.

these have either shown up overnight or this is a kuhli who has been hiding when I’ve been watching the tank and I’ve not seen him before to notice this developing.

When I got them there were a few that were significantly paler than the others but I assumed that was just stress colouration from shipping/transport. Could this be the remnants of that as regular colour returns or is it an injury/illness?

If it isn’t normal colouration adjustment, how can I treat it?

My parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5.0 nitrate, 7.6 ph, 7 gh, 5 kh.

what kind of loaches do i have?

I have 6 of these little guys and I absolutely adore them. They’re much less shy than I expected initially and I can always see at least one or two out and about.

That said, I have them in a 15 gallon (60x30x31cm) as they were sold as “dwarf kuhli” but I think they’re looking more like p. kuhlii or semicinta?

If so is the tank still appropriate for them? It’s got sandy substrate, lots of hides and plants, and no other bottom dwellers aside from some shrimp.

I don’t want them to feel crowded but i also have no idea how i would transfer them to a bigger tank without taking apart my whole scape as they’re quick and sneaky little dudes😭

How to cope with the fact that I am the reason a fish died? (Please be kind)

I had my first fish loss today and it was entirely my fault.

I have only been in the fishkeeping hobby for a few months now, I added my fish to my fully scaped, planted, and cycled tanks 3-4 weeks ago.

Yesterday I injured this poor little kubotai while I was siphoning, (he swam into the suction and got wounded) I immediately stopped the suction and tried everything I could do in the moment to help (turned off tank lights, isolated in a breeder box, and added IAL and Stresscoat) but I think the shock was too much for such a tiny fish and eventually he just seemed to be suffering too much and had to be euthanised.

I feel like a horrible person, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it and I don’t know how to accept that the only reason he was injured and is now no longer with us is because of me.

Swim In Peace.

ETA: I will try my best to respond to everyone, but in case I can’t thank you all so much for your kind words and stories, it’s really helpful and I’m so glad to have this community who understands the feeling. ♥️

I accidentally knocked the tank lid closed while I was getting water out to do my liquid tests and this guy who had been grazing on my frogbit near the surface got startled, swam down to his favourite piece of wood and then proceeded to stare daggers at me like this for the next 10 minutes even after I apologised 😭

Now some people say fish aren’t capable of vengeance but idk I feel like I need to watch my back. 💀
