Update/advice

Hi, posted awhile ago asking if a diorama was "do-able" skill wise and low budget wise for a small museum. Thanks for the encouragement and advice!
I went with Styrofoam sheets 1) because the shape perfectly matched the shape of the display case it will go in 2) price. Yes they are not ideal material but they were fine!
I built up the terrain using crumpled paper bag and tape, then paper mached 4 layers (newspaper, paper towel, tissue paper) with mod podge. I reinenforced the sides/edges with cereal box cardboard before adding the paper mache.
The center is a pond, flowing into a canal, with a few old mill buildings. The land is gently hilly with grass and dirt and trees (think new england).
So: what do you suggest for next steps? Am I ready for paint? I have some Liquitex Acrylics. Green for land and blue for water. Or do you recommend "underpainting" the base first, with a neutral line gray then detailing the landscape? I would like to get some scenery grass and trees from woodland scenics. Should I work on the buildings before painting the base? I keep thinking ill pop them in later, but maybe should be working in tandem.
Thank you again! Ive been enjoying this so far and excited to progress to next steps.
