What Hong Kong’s protests taught the world about preparation. The 2019 Hong Kong protests became known for their organization, adaptability, and emphasis on protecting one another. Some of the widely documented tactics included:

• “Be Water.” Stay flexible, avoid being boxed in, and adapt quickly to changing situations.

• Leaderless organization. Decentralized coordination allowed the movement to continue even when individual organizers were arrested.

• Protective gear. Many protesters wore helmets, goggles, gloves, and sturdy clothing to reduce the risk of injury.

• Umbrellas as protection. Umbrellas became an iconic symbol, used to provide cover from cameras, rain, and to create visual barriers.

• The “cone tactic.” Traffic cones were sometimes placed over deployed tear gas canisters before they were extinguished, becoming one of the protest’s most recognizable symbols of collective action.

• Water bottles and teamwork. Volunteers were often seen using water to help cool or extinguish tear gas canisters while others assisted with cones or helped keep people away from the area.

• Street medics. Volunteer first-aid teams treated injuries and helped people affected by crowd-control measures.

• Supply chains. Communities passed along water, first-aid supplies, food, helmets, and other essentials through coordinated volunteer networks.

• Real-time communication. Protesters relied on encrypted messaging platforms and live updates to share information about road closures, medical assistance, and changing conditions.

• Buddy system. People looked after one another, attended in groups, and ensured everyone got home safely. The lasting lesson from Hong Kong wasn’t just resistance. It was preparation, mutual aid, adaptability, and community coordination under pressure. And don’t forget why you’re there. Stay focused on the cause, not the confrontation. Protect yourself, don’t retaliate, and don’t let provocation distract from the demand for accountability.

The Meaning of Hippie

Hello. I have wanted to post something like this for a while but I have held off because it seems a bit pretentious. But after reading submissions in the sub for a while I felt it would be okay to have a go at it.

I was born in Santa Cruz California in 1970. My mother was 16 and my dad was 18. They were both hippies here. They distributed the Oracle for a living and made candles. I did not fall far from the tree. I started going to rainbow gatherings and Grateful Dead shows when I was 16. I lived the hippie communal life full of psychedelics and dancing and music and camping out. I would like to share with you what I feel the meaning of being a hippie is.

The first thing I could think of to say is, it is about self-expression. It is not about wearing clothes that fit the hippie look, whatever the hell that is, it is about wearing clothes and artwork and hairstyles that truly Express how you feel. Not how you feel in an image sort of sense, but how you feel while you're wearing them. How they make you feel when you look at them. How they remind you of the sun, or the ocean, or the forest. It is about wearing clothing and jewelry that is handmade or recycled and altered. It is about wearing your hair long because it feels good, not for how it looks. Because it defies the establishment, not because it identifies you as counterculture.

The next thing I would point to is an overall sense of oneness with nature. Turning away from practices and lifestyles that contradict nature or harm the earth. This was what was behind the vegetarian movement. Natural foods, natural medicines, natural lifestyle. Living in harmony with the cycles of the seasons and with the Flora and fauna of mother earth.

Additionally, there is the mind expansion part of it. Psychedelic substances. Meditation. Ecstatic dancing. These things that serve to take us out of our rational mind and into our intuitive and creative mind. Places where we join with spirit of the animals and natural creation.

And lastly it is about living a lifestyle that is not in conflict with others. Allowing everyone to experience peace when they meet you. That's what's behind the saying, peace man. Allowing everyone you come into contact with to feel free to be their own creative expressive self. Not judging anyone who's not harming others. Helping wherever you can. Not being caught up with the pursuit of money and material things. Not joining into conflicts in action or conversation.

It has always been said that it is difficult to define what a hippie is. Even in the 60s they had a hard time defining it and agreeing upon the definition. They actually had a ceremony called the Death of Hippie, I think in 1967 it might have been a year or so later I'm not sure. But the main concept was to transcend labels and identifications and concepts. So it can rightly be said that it is hard or impossible to define what a hippie is. But the things that I have listed here are what I have experienced in my life as a hippie.

More Exposure

I had no idea the sub existed. I love Ossof and think it would be great if people could do a little more cross-posting of things that are submitted here. Right now he is my personal favorite for 2028. More people need to be exposed to his platform
