Review #6 Barrell Seagrass

This evening we dive into one of my wife’s favorites. This was the first whiskey’s that she enjoyed sipping neat. This will always be special to me because now we enjoy this hobby together.

Barrell puts out some great products in my opinion. This is the Seagrass, it is finished in Martinique Rum, Maderia & Apricot Brandy Barrels. It comes in at 119.1 proof. If I remember correctly I paid $80 for this bottle.

Nose: Right off the bat I get confectioners sugar, and Vanilla cake frosting. At the end of the nose, the Apricot really comes thru along with some other fruit notes. Smells delicious.

Palate: I get pineapple and heavy apricot, fairly thick viscosity with a great mouth feel. Towards the end some nice rye spices come in to balance the sweetness.

Finish: The finish is nice. This really takes you on an enjoyable ride. The finish is clean if that makes sense, the sweetness is balanced out again by the rye spices and at the end a mint note.

I really enjoy this pour. It is on the sweet side but in the best way. This is not one that has to be limited to a “Dessert Pour”. In my opinion it stands up in its own very well. A fantastic pour if you are looking to sip on something different or to share with someone new to Whiskeys, Bourbons and Ryes.

Stagg 26A

Found this bottle while out today. It was a decent price and I have not had the 26A yet. Anybody had the pleasure yet?

This is a fantastic bottle I have had the privilege of enjoying many times. It is a pick from a bar / cocktail lounge that my wife and I frequent. They make a fantastic Old Fashioned with this bottle. I was fortunate enough to get a bottle of this stuff before it’s gone. This is 10 years old and comes in at 131.3 proof.

Nose: Sweet and fruity. I get some chocolate and dark cherries in there. And it sinuses off with some baking spices.

Palate: Some nice dark cherries and maple come in. The viscosity is fantastic…. Really coats the mouth nicely. As it finishes I get brown sugar / crème brûlée It’s so good…….

Finish: I get some smoke and then the oak really starts to shine. The barrel char is noticeable and delicious. The finish is strong and it really doesn’t drink its proof.

This is one I really enjoy. I am an all around fan of Elijah Craig and have 6+ different bottles of theirs open in my collection as well speak. This is in my top 2. It is fantastic in an Old Fashioned but really shines sipping neat. I will have to try to pull some strings to get my hands on another bottle of this before it’s gone.

Meet Pepper. She just turned 7 years old. I found out when she was a puppy that she loved chasing a ball. It quickly became her favorite ting in the world. She is an inside dog and first ting every morning she goes outside and runs right I her basket to chase her ball. All throughout the day….chase her ball. As soon as we get done with dinner…. Chase her ball. And before bed even when it’s dark…….you guessed it. Time to chase the ball. You can see in the video the path that she has worn from running the same path. I film that path in every other month or so. She is my wife’s dog, and the best dog I have ever been around. Such a great personality and is so smart. Just can’t say enough good things about this little lady.

Today’s review is of the 2025 Starhill Farm American Wheat Whisky from Makers Mark distillery. This one comes in at 114.7 proof and is full of flavor. I paid $120 for this at my local liquor store. Spoiler - Worth every penny.

Nose: I let this sit out on the counter for about 5-10 min before I had a sip. I was prepping dinner talking to my waiter and just kept getting whiffs as we were talking. Such a wonderfully fruity, custard note. And the sweetness!! It has such a great nose.

Taste: The first thing I noticed is the texture… really great viscosity. Right off the bat I get vanilla and Carmel candies. Then I get sweet oak and icing notes. As I am writing this, it sounds like this may be overly sweet….. it is not. It is balanced perfect.

Finish: The finish is fantastic. It is very complex and changes from sweet to oaky and really lasts a while.

All in all if you can get a bottle or a pour of this please do. I enjoy wheaters but I normally prefer a higher corn mashbill. This is the exception. This has become my favorite wheated whisky that I have tried. I can’t wait to see what the 2026 offering will be like.

I had the opportunity to hit the water for about 3 hours this morning. It was fairly slow as far as the fishing was concerned. I was fishing a small lake that just had a 3 day trout tournament fished this last weekend. I landed (3) 12-15” rain bows and this nice 6lb 3oz rainbow. I also included a few pics of my boat setup when I fish alone with 2 rods. I fish alone a lot and this setup has been my favorite so far. Most everything is up and out of the way which makes it easier to net fish when fishing alone.

This is a short review of the Fish Fighter brand fillet table. I have had this table in my boat for 2 full seasons now. I would have to say that this has been on e of the best upgrades to my boat so far. It is very sturdy. The way that the fish fighter products attach to your gunwale makes installing and removing very easy. I do a lot of trout and Kokanee fishing and clean between 50-100 fish most weekends thru the summer. Being able to stand at this table and clean fish while still fishing is a game changer for time management. I installed a wash down pump next to the table for easy cleanup of the boat and fish. I would highly recommend all of the Fish Fighter products. While they are not cheap, their customer service has been great and all their products are made in Idaho.
