[53/M] Canadian looking for someone different

I had a few penpals a very long time ago and would like try again. Having a couple of things in common is fine but I'd love to have a penpal or two with different interests and experiences from me so that we can learn from each other while getting to know each other. Getting a nice letter in the mail would make my day, and I'd hope to make your day when you get a letter from me.

I'm in my 50s so my ideal penpal would be under 40 OR over 65.

I'm in Canada so my ideal penpal would be from anywhere else.

I'm a physics teacher so my ideal penpal would be a non-sciencey person (though being curious about science would be great).

Open minded with a sense of humour is a must. We can chat a bit in reddit and if things click we can start via snail mail, maybe about once per month(ish). I have a lot to offer in terms of being a good listener, and sending crafty things once in a while to brighten your day ☺️.

My Boise Idaho Stationery Haul

I didn't look that hard, but I'm guessing that's the first time that post title has been used in this (or any) sub! Just packing up from being in Idaho for a week. I realize that Idaho is not a hot spot for stationery (though really - it is beautiful here and I had a great time), but as a Canadian, I took advantage of being here for the week. I arranged for shipments from Jet Pens and Amazon, and also hit a few local shops to add (mostly) to my paper collection for my sampler project!

Please send positive vibes my way - I think I am over my head

Some of you may know me from my “paper sampler” project over on r/pen_swap, where I’ve been encouraging people to try a blinded paper test and see what they actually like without getting influenced by brand reputation, hype, price, etc.

So I figured it was time to put my money where my mouth is.

I just made myself an A5 binder with one sheet of each paper from the sampler set, and I’m going to test them all as blindly/fairly as I can with a mix of pens and inks. My plan is to score each paper as I go and see which ones actually work best for me. The sampler set provides a 3.5 inch x 5.5 inch piece of each, but I gave myself a little extra room for more thorough testing.

Honestly, I’m a little nervous to see the results. I have some favorites in my head already, and I’m fully prepared to have my assumptions wrecked. I expect the testing to take me a few days of chipping away as I have time, so positive vibes sent my way are appreciated!

I’ll try to share updates as I work through it. Curious to see whether the “known favorites” come out on top for me, or whether something totally unexpected wins.

Testing Translucent "Papers" ... I did not even know that Kon Peki could sheen!

Currently testing some translucent "papers" that I just added to my paper sampler. These are definitely more of a "special occasion" use, but I have to admit they're very fun to write on and offer a totally different experience.

One of them in particular sheens like crazy! No problem seeing the pink sheen in Kon-Peki or the gold sheen in both Momiji and Yama-budo. Nitrogen pretty much sheens on anything, but I used it as well.

2nd Peek behind the curtain: custom A5 notebook and notepad folio (finished!)

I made a post discussing the work that went into designing a custom folio for a fellow redditor. If you missed it, here's a link.

I just finished it and thought I'd share some photos of the process. First photo shows the pieces cut out. We went with Buttero Cognac (lighter exterior) and Buttero Whiskey (darker interior). Second photo shows the pieces laid out in their positions.

Photos 3 and 4 show sewing in progress. It is fully hand sewn, which took a total of about 3 hours. Sewing the left side was especially challenging as it is much thicker. Photo 5 shows the left side complete. The slit allows the insertion of the Rhodia pad, and there are two small pockets sized for 4x4 and 3x5 papers. There is also a full sized pocket behind that for A5 papers.

Remaining photos show the completed folio. I'm especially happy with how the pen loop worked out. The user wanted it inset so that the pen does not stick out when it is put away.

My first "nice" pencil: Kuro Toga Wood

Very excited to get my first "nice" pencil! I just ordered this from Amazon - when it arrives next week I'll post my very first "New Pencil Day". Quick tip for any other Canadians out there (or anybody else really wanting to get their hands on this pencil) - it is currently available on Canadian Amazon for 50 CAD (roughly 36 USD).

Wow the sheen!

Owners of super sheening inks likely already know this, but I just accidentally discovered that OS Nitrogen definitely sheens on skin! I've had plenty of inky fingers over the years, but this was the first time that I had sheening fingers!

Two things I've learned from my 100+ paper sampler project

Disclosure: I've been selling paper samplers over on r/pen_swap for the last month or so, but I consider myself a member of this community first and foremost. This really is not meant to be an "ad".

My paper sampler includes most of the papers that get talked about on this sub a lot, such as Clairefontaine, Midori MD, Rhodia, and Tomoe River (both the "original" Tomoegawa-made and all four of the modern Sanzen-made variants). It also includes papers that occasionally get discussed here, as well as many papers that rarely, if ever, get mentioned, and many that most people have never heard of.

Each of the papers in the sample pack is labelled with a four-digit code, but the paper IDs themselves are not included in the pack. I offer to provide the paper IDs when requested, but I explain that it is my recommendation that they NOT request the paper IDs until AFTER they have spent some time with all of the papers, and ideally tested them to find what works well for them, and chosen their favorites while not knowing what they are using (i.e., "blinded" to the paper IDs).

That brings me to the first thing I've learned from this: we are all influenced by "reputation," and it can fool us into thinking we like a paper more, or less, than we really do. I am certainly not the first to recognize the importance of "blinding" like this, and in fact I am reminded of a quote from Richard Feynman: "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool."

Most users who take me up on my optional "blinded paper test" challenge end up being surprised by what their favorite papers actually are. I was prompted to write this post by one such person who shared their experience with my paper sampler just last night. Here is a direct quote from them: "Wow my previous favorite Midori didn’t even make it to my favorites." And this was after they listed 14 papers as "all being great," meaning that their previous favorite, Midori, didn't make it into their top 14 out of roughly 100 papers in the sampler.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying that Midori is a bad paper, and neither are they. In fact, here is the second thing I have learned from this project: there is no single paper that is "best" for everyone. There is a LOT of variation in personal preference for papers, which should not be surprising, but I don't think gets talked about enough. For example, some people love thinner papers, such as 52 gsm Tomoe River, and others hate them. Just like pens and inks, different people value different paper qualities. Some people value smoothness above all else, while other people value other things more, such as fast dry time, showing off ink behaviors like shading or sheening, etc.

If you've been using the same paper for a while, I'd encourage you to give a new paper (or two) a try. I'm always surprised when people have 50+ different inks they like to experiment with, but only one or two different papers.

A peek behind the curtain: designing a custom A5 notebook and notepad folio

I make notebooks and leather goods, with a lot of overlap between the two. One of my favorite parts of the process is custom work, especially when someone has a very specific “this should exist, but I can’t quite find it anywhere” sort of idea.

A while ago, I connected with a Redditor who was looking for a custom A5 leather folio with very specific features that they couldn't find commercially. Here was his original wish list:

  • holds a Leuchtturm 1917 A5 hardcover notebook on one side (for notes worth keeping and referencing later)
  • also holds an A5 notepad on the other side (such as a Rhodia No. 16, for more disposable notes)
  • includes at least one pen loop, preferably two if practical, placed near the center/binding area
  • includes a place to hold a few loose 4 x 4 inch notes if possible
  • structured and sturdy ... definitely "not floppy"
  • a cutout window to keep the Leuchtturm elastic band accessible when installed in the folio
  • simple/minimal overall design with a small overall footprint

After a fair bit of back and forth, we settled on one pen loop as footprint size was the higher priority. I came up with a design and made a paper mockup of what ended up being version 1 (see photos 1 through 7 ... the last photo is version 2). I used heavy paper so I could test the layout for function, clearly show where stitching lines would be visible (which ended up being very helpful!), pocket placement, pen loop position, and how the folio would behave when loaded with the actual notebook, pad, pen, and loose notes. The tricky part is that each of those features sounds simple on its own, but they start competing for space pretty quickly once everything has to close cleanly.

The first version mostly worked, but the mockup immediately revealed a few issues. Originally, I placed the pen loop closer to the middle as requested. Functionally, it worked, but sewing it in that position would mean that stitching would have been visible on the exterior of the back cover as seen in photo #6). I had also designed two loops to more securely hold the pen. After discussing this, we decided to go with a single pen loop along the right perimeter instead. The notebook was shifted inward a bit so the pen stays enclosed rather than hanging past the edge, which was important to the user.

I managed to mock up an access window to keep the Leuchtturm elastic accessible as requested, but it created a weaker and less even writing surface that concerned me, so I warned the user about it. After discussing it, we decided to omit that feature and keep the notebook sleeve simpler (and therefore stronger & more functional). The user had planned to use the elastic as a page marker, in addition to the built-in ribbons of this notebook, so I offered alternative solutions and will be including a few metal page darts for additional page marking.

The left side ended up being the more interesting design challenge. A Rhodia pad is much more flexible than a hardcover notebook, so that side of the folio needed to provide more of the structure the user was wanting. I added a few layers on that side to stiffen it up and to create two small storage pockets for the 4" x 4" notes the user was hoping for.

After discussing the design's inclusion of two pockets for 4" x 4" cards, the user requested a change: one pocket to be sized for 4" x 4" notes and the other one sized for 3" x 5" index cards. Each pocket will have its own stitch line to control the depth, so the notes/cards should sit deep enough to be secure but still be accessible. 3" x 5" index cards were not part of the original plan, but this addition is a big win for the user! I inserted two pieces of brown craft paper at each of these sizes in their pockets and you can see them peeking out behind the Rhodia pad in the last photo.

So the final plan that we are agreed on (see updated paper mockup in the last photo) is now:

  • Rhodia-style A5 notepad on the left (installed by inserting back cover into a cutout slit)
  • Leuchtturm 1917 A5 hardcover notebook on the right (installed by sliding back cover into a pocket)
  • one pen loop on the right perimeter, but placed to contain the pen within the overall footprint
  • two small storage pockets on the left side behind the notepad
  • structured leather build, with extra rigidity where the notepad side needs it

We are now at the point of moving into the actual build. I’ll make a separate post once I start cutting and stitching the actual leather for another "peek behind the curtain" focusing on the build itself. I thought some folks here might enjoy seeing the planning side of a custom notebook-related build before the “ooh, pretty” finished product.

Starting a hand made notebook and stationery club!

I've been working on my own hand made notebooks and did a deep dive into the world of paper. I'm now ready to start an "experimental pocket sized notebook of the month club". Each month will feature a notebook along with some little surprises. I'm going to start with just one round and if it goes well I will offer a monthly subscription.

Cost will be $20 plus shipping which is actually from Canada. I'm guessing closer to $30 all in. Notebooks will be pocket sized (3.5 x 5.5 inches), made with different papers, covers, page layouts etc to keep things interesting! Let me know if interested in being among the first to join! Aiming for June signups with first round going out towards end of June, receive early July.

Leather lead holder ideas?

I'm a Leathercrafter and just bought my first couple of nicer pencils. I had the thought of wrapping one of the "disposable" lead holders they came with in leather and then just top it up with fresh lead as needed. However they are quite small as they came bundled with the pencils.

Are there any particularly functional full sized lead holders to use as the inner holder, that would still work well if wrapped in leather? Thanks!

I just made my first Wire-bound Notebooks using FP friendly papers!

Having made a bunch of stapled notebooks already, I thought I'd see how the same notebooks turn out with wire binding, and I have to say I love them! They are truly lay-flat, and the wire binding doesn't add much thickness. I'm going to try pocket carrying one around for a week or so to see how it holds up.

I made 8 pocket sized notebooks, 2 in each of the following papers:

  • Tomoe River 52 gsm
  • MD Cotton
  • Kokuyo Business Paper
  • Crena

Each is 48 pages, which, for these papers ended up quite thin. I'm going to try the same in a 60 page version to give them a bit more bulk, and also try 48 page versions using heavier paper (like HP Premium32) next.

I also wanted to experiment in a lager format, so I made one A5 using the Kokuyo Business Paper as well. It has 100 sheets. I left the cover of that one blank, but it has a secondary clear plastic cover, so it is a "blank slate". (though internal pages are dots).
