Looking for friends before the semester starts.

Hi everybody. I'm a recent transfer student from Langara college who doesn't know anyone at UBC. I've heard its difficult to make friends here and wanted to get ahead of it by making a post on this sub to see if I could start a dialogue with anybody. Feel free to shoot me a message and see if we click.

Edit: I'm a 19M just to clarify. Don't want to mislead anybody!

Recent UBC transfer looking to meet people.

I'm moving to Vancouver in a month to attend UBC and I know absolutely nobody. Would like to make some friends or acquaintances before I arrive. I'm a 19 y/o Male so I would prefer people around my age. If you go to UBC that's also a plus. Feel free to DM me.

Any good alternatives to craigslist for finding rentals?

I'm applying to a handful of rooms on craigslist but I was wondering if anybody knows any better website for finding rooms.

Scammed by 'Friend' of Multiple Years.

I won't go into too much detail but I got scammed out of thousands of dollars by someone who I believed was my friend. They invoked alot of personal struggle and led me to believe they were homeless so I decided to help them out despite being poor myself. I gave them an extremely generous window to pay me back but they always came up with an excuse when it came time to pay up. I decided to do some digging and it turns out they weren't homeless at all, and just wanted money lmfao. Lesson learned I guess.

I've never been more frustrated in my life.

Workday is blocking me from enrolling in a course due to missing prerequisites despite the fact that I 100% have them. I dropped a course during first term to make room for that one, and now it won't allow me to enroll in that same course I dropped for second term because I apparently surpassed the amount of times I can reattempt a course??? (I never attended a lecture or discussion for this course yet, I'm assuming its because I dropped it too many times trying to rearrange my schedule). Not to mention other courses I need already being full before I even have a chance to try and get in. Time to lay down.

Any UBC students on this sub?

I'm moving to Vancouver and attending UBC in the fall and know nobody. Would love to meet people with similar values as me and this seemed like a good place to ask.

Mods feel free to remove this post if it breaks any rules.

Anybody study math after time away from it?

Hi everyone. I'm starting my first year at UBC in September and hoping to specialize in Math. However, I haven't done math for a couple years. I'm currently reviewing the basics and honestly I'm struggling more than I thought would and it's making me question if I'm capable enough to pursue a math degree. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience going into UBCs math program after time off and what it was like. All input is appreciated!

The limits of electoralism. What are your perspectives?

Obviously the NDP is a democratic socialist and social democratic party, and as such we work within the confines of liberal democracy. Maybe I am naive, but for a while now I have believed the future of socialism is through reform. However, between learning/thinking more about history, the contemporary political climate both within and outside of Canada, and admittedly, spending too much time amongst the online left, I have begun having doubts on how much change we can actually achieve through the ballot box. This would be less of a problem if there were any real movements being built outside of our electoral system or any revolutionary fervor at all amongst Canadians. As a pacifist, avoiding a bloody conflict is fine by me, and one occurring in Canada in the first place is extremely unrealistic. So this leads me to two questions. How limiting do you think liberal democracy is when attempting to achieve socialism? What are some alternative pathways to building socialism outside of electoral politics or banking on a revolution? Would love to hear everybody's thoughts!

What is your guys predictions for the next federal election?

What is your guys predictions, not just for the NDP, but for Canadian politics as a whole? Obviously Canadian politics is impossible to predict but its fun to speculate. My prediction is that by 2029, Carneys support will waver and there will be a CPC minority IF Poilievre is replaced. The BQ sees a bit of a collapse in support as they are associated with an unpopular PQ government that is trying to force a referendum. As a result the NDP finally regains some ground in QC, and wins backs multiple seats in Western Canada to regain party status. Greens will also see a slight rejuvenation under Mike Morrice. What do you guys think?
