If you are a bit nerdy you might find this interesting

The phrase "man's best friend" was coined in 1870 after a speech by lawyer George Graham Vest. He was hired in 1869 to represent Charles Burden in a case known as Burden v. Hornsby. The client's hound was killed by a sheep farmer by the name of Hornsby. The farmer had previously notified Burden of his intention to shoot any dog he finds on his property. He sued for damages equaling to $150 which was the maximum he could sue for at the time. During the trila Vest said he would "win the case or apologize to every dog in Missouri".

This is a piece of the surviving transcript of the closing speech
"Gentlemen of the jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.
Gentlemen of the jury: A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.
If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

Vest won the case and Burden received $50 from the ordeal. A bust of the dog sits outside the Missouri Supreme Court containing a summation of Vest's speech "dog is man's best friend". So if you've ever wondered who you had to thank for that asinine quote I hereby give you your answer

This has been bugging me for several days now and I need to tell someone about it

I finally found a group that allows politics although this isn't necessarily politic related. For context I am an eastern European living in the United States for most of my life, I have family scattered across Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. A girl I knew in high school that I follow on social media went to Ukraine to visit her family in Kyiv. The daytime posts were fine and casual then at night is when I started to get a little annoyed. For additional context this girl is Ukrainian but has literally never posted a single thing about the Ukrainian war since it started. Now all of a sudden she's posting the most pick me main character stories I've ever seen in my life. She's claiming after one night that she's going to get PTSD when she comes back to the US, she's typing stuff like "why did my mom bring me here I want to go home I'm gonna die pray for me" followed by a bunch of Kyiv related attacks from other social media users as well as a screenshot from every single air raid siren she's ever received. Every time she shared a video of an attack that was taken by someone else on social media she would say stuff like "oh that was a block from my house" or "that store was a few blocks from where I am now". Now don't get me wrong I'm not here to minimize trauma or fear because I do believe there is a genuine aspect to her post. My problem with this is that she came to Ukraine and basically adopted the entire four year Ukrainian trauma onto herself like "look we're the same now". If you've ever followed a Ukrainian on social media you'll see a different tone of posting even when the war first broke out and people weren't used to spending nights in bomb shelters yet. There was a lot less complaining and a lot more information being put out there. People might post one photo of a crowded train station at night and leave it at that instead of sympathy farming. Does anyone else kind of get where I'm coming from? My husband is wondering why it bothers me so much but I've been diligently following this war for years. I've helped in any way I can from a distance and two years ago I even helped my mom make part of the uniform. Her friend worked with an organization that helped provide material for their summer uniform as well as in some cases even finished uniforms I donated in March as often as I could and even supported the Ukranian merchants at festivals. For clarification this isn't to say that I'm more invested than her or I'm better than her in anyway. I just feel like it's in such poor taste to do what she did, like she used the collective trauma of the Ukrainian people for her own personal gratification. Open to comments and questions

Southwest USA

Most of the US is currently suffering under a heat warning so I decided to check the temperature for the whole country (I live in Northeastern US). I checked Tucson and apparently it's going to be well over 100 all week. What is it like over there with the constant heat?

Renewing passport?

How risky would it be to return back to Belarus to renew my passport after it expired last year? Currently living in the US and I renewed back in 2015. My only concern is my public "anti Lukashenko stance" propaganda on social media from a few years ago. My childhood best friend was imprisoned in 2021 following the protests and they found her through social media

I'm almost done thank god. This isn't my biggest or most challenging piece but it's been a drag stitching it. It's for my father for Father's Day. The pattern is The Fisherman on Etsy

As a flat chested girlie I'm looking for dress cuts that flatter my top half the best. Anything with an empire waist looks weird on me. I will be wearing a push up bra but my chest still looks laughably small and pronounced with a bra on. Any advice is welcome. If it matters I plan to get a mini dress but wear some type of long sleeve bolero thing because I get cold easily
