Microsoft informed me that my Yubikey can only be used to login on the laptop I used to registered it.

Why in the world would I want to hobble my Yubikey so I have to drag a laptop along with it just to sign onto Microsoft. I’m trying to unhobble the key but I can’t see any way to do it on the Microsoft website. EDIT: 8/12/2026 Having read the comments I have gained a better understanding. This is a sample of the ambiguous message displayed on my screen:

“This passkey can only be used on the DEVICE where it was created. If you lose the device, you won't be able to use it to sign in to your Microsoft account.”

They could have written: “This passkey can only be used on the HARD TOKEN where it was created. If you lose the hard token…”

(The word “Passkey” is a newly adopted word added to the internet login technology lexicon in 2022.)

Is it safe to register a Yubikey or any hard token on a library pc?

I keep hearing that it’s not safe. But if it’s just a way to store dynamic passwords and you keep it hidden from thieves, there shouldn’t be a risk. If nobody else has your key, then it should be safe. EDIT: 7/28/2026 I know now that somebody could insert their own hard token into a hidden port inside the public PC you’re renting and trick the website you want to secure into registering the changeling token so they can snoop. It means I have to fork out $800 for a new laptop just so I can register a hard token safely. (My laptop and mobile are compromised)

Does Austin Energy send a monthly "your home electricity report" email to its customers like Austin Water sends a monthly “your home water report" to its customers?

I see my water use reported monthly and I want to see my electric use reported too. Maybe it’s something you sign up for?

Did Channel 24 (KVUE) lose all of its auxiliary channels yesterday evening? I’m not seeing 24-2, 24-3 etc today 7/18/‘26

EDIT 7/19/‘26 The auxiliary channels have been restored since yesterday.

My Facebook account has started to grey out the comment section of any post I have viewed and commented on through my phone. So editing or viewing my comments isn’t possible without borrowing a pc. This happened after I updated the app. Has anyone else experienced this?

I updated the FB app after it kept freezing my screen with a verification questionnaire every time I tried to comment on certain groups. I suspect that I’ve been targeted for this odd treatment because of my views on history and politics and because of my interest in E2EE to ensure the authenticity of my internet contributions.

The city of Austin wants to remove the “Conditional Overlay” zoning that restricts car trips to a property that will be zoned for “Mixed Use” and “Light Office”.

Have you seen this happen near you? What were the results?

Each side of that seat had its own hinge or was individually mounted on the hinge. I still saw some at gas stations decades ago. The internet seams to have forgotten about it.
