Was this a normal euthanasia?

Hi reddit,

A few weeks ago I had a cat I rehomed due to housing instability 2 years ago showed up at animal control. She had been dumped.

All labs came back abnormally normal lol

She started having cluster seizures and was eventually diagnosed with a brain tumor after ruling everything else out. During an episode, she veered into status epilticus and I made the decision to take her to an urgent care vet instead of waiting three more days for her end of life appointment.

Before they even saw her, the tech told me that if her blood pressure was too low to place IV cath they would have to take her back for anesthesia in which case I could not be present for the euth. Her blood pressure had been checked and fine three days prior so I thought no issue.

We get into a room, wait an hour, they take her back - come back after 10 mins and inform me her blood pressure is too low and they have to take her for her euthanasia.

The euth took 40 minutes before they returned me the body (I bury my pets under a shady tree on my property in the sticks).

How typical is it for that to be the case? I have put down quite a few pets, a devastating amount in the last 3 years, and have NEVER heard that disclaimer. Then for it to actually be the case..?

It all just felt weird to me.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Everyone's favorite - poop. More hair than a sweater and some worries.

Hey there,

Google has failed me. My search history now contains phrases no person should ever type, including 'dog poop woven entirely from hair.'

https://imgur.com/a/oHnv0fa

Current household status:

Dog #1 (suspected poop owner) ~ Brewster • 5 to 7 year old neutered male, • Pittbull x Yorkie x Bichon Frise. • Dumped in the city before a/c picked him up (microchipped, fam said don't call back). • I pulled him from the shelter on 4/27/24 and by 4/28 he was hospitalized (his story will be a whole other post 🫩)

Dog #2 ~ Bear • 9-ish month old neutered male • Speculated to be a Leonberger mix. He is big so maybe. • was in a high-kill area of TX, rescue i work with pulled and transported him here just for me. • dumb as a box of rocks • within the first month he gave me his first cluster seizure episode pretty stable since, but no reoccurring. No meds.

Dog #3 ~ Basil • 5 year old neutered male • British Lab • Only real medical history is injury related, besides one time his liver values scared the crap out of us for one day and then were normal upon re-draw the next day and since then.

Dog #4 ~ Trigonometry (Trig) • 4 year old spayed female • British Lab • not much to note, she keeps to herself. She's a princess.

I am UNSURE which dog this came out of.

We pick up poop daily, so this wasn't sitting outside long enough to become a science experiment.

All four dogs are on preventatives, but I know those don't cover everything so fecal testing is already planned.

We have a vet appointment in 2 days. We have been to the urgent care and ER this week already. Cat died last week after 2 ER visits and a f/ with primary. I am not asking for diagnosis as much as just... this is abnormal AF right?

■ Brewster recently had an acute GI episode with abdominal pain, slight swelling/firmness, complete lack of appetite. I took him to an urgent care vet who did a fast ultrasound to verify he was stable and then suggested fluids and an appetite stimulant. I took him home and packed a bag and headed for the an ER. > CBC, Chem, and electrolyte panels unremarkable. As in, not a single marker outside of the reference value range. > Urinalysis had a few flags, but not uncommon for a male dog; Urine Protein: 30 Bilirubin: 3 Urobilinogen: 6 Fast ultrasound confirmed no immediate visible crisis in the abdomen. The vet no longer thought X-rays were high on her list of diagnostic wants. She advised me to book an advanced ultrasound (apt 7/30) and follow up with his primary (apt 7/31). She suggested he may actually be having some back pain that only masks as abdominal pain. Gabapentin, carprofen, and IV fluids send home w/ me to administer subcu. I happened to find a literal hole in the roof of his mouth en route to the ER. No idea how me and the 18 vets he's seen have missed it this long.

■ Bear has been having loose, foul smelling stools. Yellowish green. No appetite loss or vomiting. Giving him mycellium powder in his food while we wait for vet. A couple of days ago, I found what I firmly believe to be a large chunk of his intestinal wall in his poop. No obvious blood. I think he is in pain because he is keeping his ears back most of the time which he never does.

■ Basil vomited a full stomach about 10 minutes after dinner. Mood remained unchanged. Unsure on poop quality because it's hard to confirm who's is whose.

■ Trig has no obvious symptoms to report. She is limping south her front leg/ shoulder. Vet apt (less urgent than everything else) is next week.
