USA men, Canadian women win 2026 Flag Football world titles

DÜSSELDORF, Germany -- The United States successfully defended the men’s title at the flag football world championships on Sunday but lost the women’s title to Canada, while Mexico’s women's team and Canada’s men's team earned qualification spots for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The U.S. men beat Italy, 46-26, to secure a sixth straight title and the women missed out on a fourth straight title after losing, 27-20, to Canada.

“Gold is the only standard,” said men’s quarterback Nico Casares, who threw two touchdown passes. “That’s our motto. That’s what we play by, that’s what we live by.”

The U.S. women started strongly but it was tied, 14-14, at the break after Caroline Moquin-Joubert caught quarterback Sara Parker’s pass at the end of the first half. Parker set up Frederique Morneau at the start of the second half as Canada took control.

The U.S. had a fourth down, yards from the line, with three seconds left, but could not make the final play count. It was Canada’s third title and first since beating the U.S. in the 2014 final.

“I feel so happy, I can’t believe it,” Parker said after hugging her mother. ”Literally the best day ever.”

The International Federation of American Football ran the championship tournament, which doubled up as a qualifier, in the German city of Düsseldorf.

The top two men’s and top two women’s teams earned a spot at the 2028 Games, along with the U.S. men’s and women’s teams because they already qualified as hosts.

Sunday’s two other finalists -- the Italian men and Canadian women -- earned an Olympic spot by reaching the final against the U.S. teams, meaning that the bronze-medal games decided who joined them.

Members of Mexico's women's team cried with joy after a 20-19 win over Great Britain -- which rallied from 20-6 down -- for the women’s bronze and an Olympic spot.

But Mexico’s men lost, 34-26, in overtime to Canada, which claimed an Olympic spot.

Switzerland STILL think Breel Embolo's yellow card for his absurd diving was because of bad reffing

“We were punished by a referee mistake. I didn’t know this rule before; it’s a very harmless situation, a yellow card was awarded, VAR interfered."

"I don’t blame Embolo at all. That would be absurd. Obviously, he is shattered. He couldn’t help the team today and it hurts him and us. I think it was a referee mistake.” - Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin.

“It’s just a disaster. I don’t know what this referee is doing here." - Switzerland’s midfielder Remo Freuler.

“If you have to lose because of one decision from the referee, it is painful. But it was his decision." - Switzerland's team captain Granit Xhaka.

SoCal businesses lose fight over gas appliances

Southern California air regulators can move forward with new limits on the sale of certain gas-powered appliances, including water heaters.

Despite pushback from businesses and developers, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in a 2-1 ruling last week upheld restrictions on commercial and industrial gas appliances in four Los Angeles-area counties.

The ruling directly affects roughly 1.3 million water heaters and industrial boilers in L.A., Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, according to the Sierra Club, a defendant in the lawsuit. South Coast Air Quality Management District adopted the mandate in 2024, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

The air board earlier this year backed down from extending the restrictions to residences.

IFAF World Flag 2026 Schedule Announced

All 32 teams going for gold and competing for Olympic Games qualification now know when they will face their rivals in Düsseldorf after IFAF World Flag 2026 schedule was released.

All 16 women’s teams are in action in the first three time slots on the opening day on Thursday, August 13, with games taking place simultaneously on three fields at the Flag Football Complex at the Koblenzer Straße district sports facility. The 12th and most anticipated IFAF flag football world championships get underway at 8am and feature 28 games in total on day one.

Defending women’s champion USA returns to action for the first time since losing the final of The World Games to Mexico and being dethroned from the number one spot in the IFAF World Rankings with a clash against Australia on Field 1. The Aussies will look to carry momentum from an impressive Asia-Oceania continental games that saw them win the Oceania division and finish as runner-up to China in the combined competition.

Bronze medalist at the 2024 games Japan takes on Brazil on Field 2 while Field 3 hosts a battle of the Americas between the teams that finished third and fourth at the continental tournament last year, Canada and Panama.

Mexico – the world number one and champion of The World Games and the Americas – will provide the ultimate test for host Germany on Field 1 at 9.15am. Two newcomers to the ultimate stage feature at the same time as African champion Nigeria faces Spain (Field 2) and Slovenia takes on Italy (Field 3). European champion Great Britain enters the competition at 10.30am against France (Field 3) and there is an intriguing matchup on Field 2 as 2025 Euro Flag silver medalist Austria tales on an emerging China team that arrives as champions of Asia-Oceania. Austria edged China 47-45 in a high-scoring thriller at The World Games last year.

The men’s tournament gets underway at 10.30am with host Germany in action on Field 1 against regular medal contender and world number three Mexico. The men’s action then fills the 11.45am time slot with European champion Italy taking on the Great Britain team they beat by one score in the Euro Flag 2025 semifinals (Field 1), world number two Austria facing Canada (Field 2) and 2024 bronze medalist Switzerland up against Brazil (Field 3).

Chasing a sixth straight world title, the United States opens against Israel at 1pm (Field 1) while third place finisher at Euro Flag 2025 France takes on Panama (Field 2). Asia powerhouse Japan meets world championships newcomer and African champion Nigeria for the first time (Field 3). There is an all-Oceania standoff at 2.15pm when the region’s continental double winner from last year Australia takes on American Samoa (Field 3).

Among other opening day highlights in the women’s competition, an intriguing game sees debutant Nigeria take on the might of the United States (3.30pm, Field 2), China plots revenge for a loss at The World Games against Great Britain (4.45pm, Field 2) and the lowest ranked nation Slovenia takes on number one seed Mexico (4.45pm, Field 3).

The second day of action sees the first seven time slots wrap up the final 20 games of the group stages to determine which nations will advance to the quarterfinals in the knockout bracket.

Among the women’s highlights on Friday, August 14, there is a repeat of the IFAF Euro Flag 2025 gold medal game which saw Great Britain come from behind to beat Austria in a tense overtime finish (Field 1, 10.30am). The Oceania and Africa champions meet when Australia faces Nigeria at the same time on Field 3, while France and China will clash for the first time ever (Field 2, 11.45am).

Men’s highlights on the second day include the number one seed USA facing the lowest ranked nation American Samoa (Field 2, 9.15am). There are three Europe vs Americas clashes as Germany takes on Brazil, Great Britain faces Panama and Switzerland meets Mexico. USA closes out the group stages against Australia (Field 1, 3.30pm), while Israel and American Samoa meet for the first time ever on Field 3 at the same time.

Saturday, August 15, is dedicated to the knockout stages and first placement games. The crucial medal games that will also determine four total qualifying places for the LA28 Olympic Games are the highlight of Sunday, August 16.

When did the Socialist Republic of Vietnam adopted the Allies' "right hand over heart" flag salute?

Back when we were kids, our elementary school made us stand to attention in the schoolyard every Monday and salute the flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam military-style to the national anthem, as if we were child soldiers fighting for the communist ideals.

This was because at the time, the same salute applied for both military personnel and civilians.

These days when Vietnamese athletes take the field, they switched over to the civilian "right hand over heart" salute, which was first established in the U.S Flag Code in 1942 to replace the Bellamy salute and quickly adopted by civilians in other Allied nations.

Does anyone remember exactly when this change came to be in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam? Who was the very first Vietnamese athlete/sport team that decided to do "right hand over heart"? Which event did that took place in? Was it an individual athlete/coach's idea that quickly caught on by other squads? Or was it an official change initiated by their organization/sporting federation?

Ludwig's message to those who are salty that he covered the EVO registration fees for the Rivals II community

I'm seeing a some people are upset at the placement for Rivals of Aether 2 at EVO For anyone unaware, I am the publisher for that game

I also remember being in the crowd at EVO 2016 and watching hungrybox beat armada through losers

It was a seminal weekend for me. I returned from Vegas and started grinding smash, got my ass beat. Then I started grinding commentary, and later on that turned into streaming

To have another platform fighter, and it be the one I publish, means something to me (regardless of how you feel about us...)

To clarify I did buy a bunch of EVO passes to help make this the biggest Rivals 2 tournament we've ever had

We handed passes to the top 128 players, ran online qualifiers, ran locals, and gave passes to TO's to give out to their community

I'm sure I got taken advantage of. People sold codes, shared them without permission, and signed up with no intention of playing. But that's the price I'm willing to pay to make this the biggest Rivals 2 event we've ever had. The community has rallied around this, and I'm pumped to go to EVO this year

See yall there (Saturday night)
