What I’ve learned from my first three unshod runs

It’s getting easier already

I’m not aching afterwards nearly as much as I was in shoes. The niggling pains of recovered tendinitis and bursitis is not increased.

I was slow before and I’m even slower now. But it’s not a race and slow is okay.

It’s quiet without shoes. So quiet I scared several unsuspecting walkers who couldn’t hear me approach.

Different terrains have entirely different obstacles to navigate which affects your movement more then I expected. This makes speed incredibly inconsistent.

Spiky plants are sometimes very hard to avoid. Thistles, holly, brambles and hawthorn are common where I live and I spent a lot of time jumping over or going around them to avoid splinters.

Gravel is a special kind of pain

It will be a while before I stop taking my wetshoes/skinners with me.

Amanita crocea?

I thought i had a picture of the perfect little orange egg it hatched out of, but i cant find it. It looked very cool and made identifying more straightforward . There were several of these growing in a birch copse. The colour was more orange than the photos. I didn’t pick it as I don’t risk unidentified amanita.

Running before I can walk is terrible idea isn’t it?

I have been experimenting with taking my shoes and socks off on gentle hikes with various terrain. I find it incredibly intense. The sensory overload of feeling each grass stem and piece of gravel is almost overwhelming. So far it is a relief to both take my shoes off, and then after a while put them back on.

One of the hikes I’ve been doing is also my running route to test but whether it’s possible.

As a kid I would hike and run and play happily unshod, but as an adult it’s more challenging.

Is there a point of reduced sensitivity that means I can start running unshod?

I would start now, but while my heart says yes, my head says no. My feet usually say nothing until it’s too late and I’m injured.

Is making a set of barefoot sandals a better step to take?

Can anyone tell what breed this bull is?

I’m sorry it’s not the best photo. He wasn’t overly happy about me being there. He doesn’t look like the bulls I’m familiar with, which are usually Hereford, Charolais and Aberdeen Angus.

My alpha gal symptoms went away completely within a year. Has anyone else experienced this?

I may have never had the condition, as my healthcare provider laughed at the suggestion of a meat allergy and said there was no such test. Alpha-gal allergy is considered extremely rare in my country. However my symptoms were consistent and only occurred after eating mammal meat. Initially I would have hives that appeared 4 hours after eating mammal meat or gelatine, then stomach pain so intense i couldn’t function. I wasn’t particularly reactive to dairy, however I had residual tick bites that only became itchy after I consumed it. This symptoms all started after receiving around 30 tick bites last summer.

After quitting dairy my bites all stopped itching. I reintroduced it a couple of months ago and how no reaction. I have since reintroduced small amounts of meat with no ill effects.

Is it possible to the symptoms to diminish in such a short timeframe? As I have never had a tingly or swollen throat or respiratory issues from any allergy I am not too concerned about anaphylaxis.

Is it worth signing up for a presale code or should I just wait 2 days for general sales?

The last puscifer gig I went to didn’t sell out completely as it was poorly advertised, but I’m not certain if they have gained popularity and tickets will be in short supply.

DIY prototypes. Which knots look best?

The leather on the left one is a bit too soft and flaps about. I think it might fold over while running and trip me. The right one needs to be trimmed down a little to be a better size.

Two years ago my daughter spotted our first chicken of the woods! “Look at that cool mushroom mummy!!!” It was perfectly ripe and delicious. The tree and several near it have produced plenty of bunches since. Usually I miss them at optimum but sometimes we get a good bit.

The land has now changed ownership. The new owners are tidying it up. They are systematically removing the ancient trees and sowing the native grasses with Italian rye to “improve” it.

All the ancient, coppiced goat willows are now cut. They must have stood for over 200 years and were the oldest I knew of. The trunks were over 4ft and across were riddled with fungus and full of birds nests and insects . One even had a feral honey bee colony in it.

A combination of myxomatosis and rhv2 has nearly wiped them out where I live. They don’t hop in front of the car anymore and I can’t chase them out of the allotment like mr mcgregor. I always took them for granted.
